OBJECTIVE: Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is currently considered to be a rare splenic tumor with malignant potential. As the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, treatment, and prognosis remain unclear, the clinical diagnosis and treatment of LCA have not been standardized. Hence, we performed a comprehensive analysis of 189 observational studies comprising 435 patients to improve the current status of diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, WanFang and CNKI were searched from inception to May 2021 to identify LCA studies that were published in English and Chinese. The

BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary tumors (SPT) of the pancreas are rare, low malignancy and predominantly affect young women, but it may be locally aggressive. Pancreatic resection is the main treatment for SPTs. However, low malignancy SPT may give insidious extrapancreatic invasions.
CASE REPORT: A 20-year-old woman was admitted with non-specific abdominal pain and diarrhea. A 9-cm SPT of the pancreas was discovered with extra-pancreatic invasion of the left adrenal gland and the spleen, in close contact with the body-tail of the pancreas, proximal portion of the jejunum, splenic flexure of

Splenic lesions in children have a wide histological spectrum. The majority of pediatric splenic lesions are benign and detected incidentally, and the most common benign lesions are cysts, followed by hemangiomas and lymphatic malformations. Most of the splenic malignancies in children are secondary to leukemia or lymphoma. The purpose of this article is to describe the ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of benign and malignant splenic lesions in the pediatric age group.

The authors review their splenectomy records for the last ten years and discuss complications and mortality in relation to the indications for such surgery in each case. They conclude that both immediate and delayed postoperative mortality reflects mainly the underlying disease rather than surgical trauma; in their clinical material, complications were never severe and at any rate readily brought under control.

Various types of lymphoma/leukemia can present with leukemic involvement by neoplastic cells with prominent nucleoli. Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) most commonly can present in this fashion but other, less common types include mantle cell lymphoma, splenic marginal zone lymphoma, splenic diffuse red pulp small B-cell lymphoma, and splenic B-cell lymphoma/leukemia with prominent nucleoli (SBLPN). The latter is a newly proposed category in the fifth edition of the World Health Organization classification of hematolymphoid neoplasms. This category includes most cases that were

BACKGROUND: The International Academy of Cytology in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer has developed a standardized World Health Organization Reporting System (WHO System) for the cytopathology of the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the spleen and thymus, performed under ultrasound or computed tomography guidance, constitutes a minimally invasive, well-tolerated, and cost-effective diagnostic technique. Despite a limited number of published studies on the diagnostic accuracy of FNAB in these organs, it remains a valuable

INTRODUCTION: Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a complication of myeloproliferative neoplasms or of chronic hemolysis. The more frequent localizations are splenic, ganglionic or paraspinal. Rarely, extramedullary hematopoiesis is associated with solid cancer.
CASE REPORT: We report an original case of sarcoma located in an extramedullary hematopoiesis mass in a 72-year-old woman suffering from hereditary spherocytosis. An asymptomatic right paravertebral mass was found in 2004; the biopsy confirmed extramedullary hematopoiesis. In 2016, the patient was hospitalized due to paravertebral pain. C

We report a case of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) with IgMκ light chain deposits in a patient with chronic hepatitis C infection and simultaneous onset of monoclonal IgMκ gammopathy with concurrent small B-cell lymphoproliferative disease. The patient presented with hepatosplenomegaly and a uremic state that necessitated dialysis without any clinical signs of systemic disease apart from the chronic infection with hepatitis C virus. The diagnostic approach led to a renal biopsy that revealed MPGN with dominant IgMκ deposits and interstitium infiltration by the lymphoid cells.

Congenital absence of portal vein (CAPV) is a rare vascular malformation: all 16 cases up to now reported are associated with other congenital anomalies and with benign or malignant hepatic neoplasms. Our report concerns a girl with a complex malformative syndrome consisting of CAPV, nodular tumor-like hyperplasia of the liver, and multicystic kidney dysplasia. CAPV was diagnosed by angiography, showing the splenic vein and superior mesenteric vein joined to form a "common trunk" directly entering the inferior vena cava above the liver. The liver maintained the normal lobular architecture, but

RATIONALE: Portal annular pancreas is a rare anatomic variation, where the uncinated process of the pancreas connects with the dorsal pancreas and the pancreas tissue encases the portal vein (PV), superior mesenteric vein (SMV) or splenic vein (SV). Malignancies are quite uncommon in the patients, who have an annular pancreas especially portal annular pancreas. Ectopic common hepatic artery and absence of the celiac trunk (CT) are the other infrequent abnormalities.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 74-year-old man suffered from upper abdominal and back pain.
DIAGNOSES AND INTERVENTIONS: Contrast enhanced

Colopleural fistula is a very rare clinical problem which was described barely in a few articles. Common causes of this kind of fistula are strangulated diaphragm hernias and neoplasms of the splenic flexure of the colon. We report a case of 58 years old male with colopleural fistula. Symptoms of left sided pyo and pneumothorax appeared two weeks after laparotomy for perforated peptic gastric ulcer. Chest tube was inserted and antibiotics was used. The pyothorax was evacuated almost entirely. Left sided recurrent purulent thoracic wall fistulas complicated the latter two and a half year course

Mantle cell lymphomas comprise 2 to 8% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the United States. They occur in older adults with a distinct male predominance, who present with generalized lymphadenopathy, and often have disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis. Pathologically, mantle cell lymphomas are characterized by a proliferation of small lymphocytes, with irregular nuclei, clumped chromatin, and sparse cytoplasm that can grow in nodular or diffuse patterns in lymph nodes, that localize to the splenic white pulp and that produce interstitial, paratrabecular, and intertrabecular lymphoid aggreg

BACKGROUND: Antiangiogenics attenuate chemotherapy-related hepatotoxicity and portal hypertension. The potential impact of bevacizumab on the efficacy and safety of partial splenic embolization (PSE) in the management of chemotherapy-induced hypersplenism (CIH) has never been investigated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study with gastrointestinal cancer patients who have undergone PSE for the treatment of thrombocytopenia resulting from hypersplenism. Pre- and post-PSE platelet count (PC), the percentage of patients who resumed systemic therapy, and complication rates wer

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic tumors to the spleen are rare but are usually found in conjunction with metastasis to other organs. The most common sources of splenic metastasis are breast, lung and colorectal cancers as well as melanoma and ovarian carcinoma. A solitary carcinosarcoma metastasis to the spleen of any origin is very rare. To the best of our knowledge, there are fewer than 30 reported cases of ovarian primary tumors with solitary metastasis to the spleen, and only three solitary primary carcinosarcomas to the spleen have been reported, of which one is female. We present what is, to the

OBJECTIVES: Splenic lesions might exhibit overlapping imaging features, varying from benign entities like cysts and hemangiomas to malignancies such as lymphoma and angiosarcoma. This meta-analysis aims to delineate imaging characteristics that distinguish malignant from benign splenic lesions.
METHODS: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies on imaging features differentiating malignant from benign splenic lesions. We extracted data on splenic pathology and imaging characteristics and assessed the methodological quality via QUADAS-2. Odds rat

Distal pancreatectomy (resection of the pancreatic body and tail) can be performed with or without preservation of the spleen. Splenic preservation has the advantages of fewer postoperative complications such as abscesses in the resection bed, shorter length of hospitalization, and avoidance of the long-term risk of post-splenectomy sepsis related to encapsulated bacteria. Two techniques can be used to save the spleen: either by dissecting out the splenic artery and vein with division of the arterial and venous branches between the pancreas and the splenic artery and vein; or by resecting the

Splenic pathologies, often overlooked in abdominal imaging, encompass a broad spectrum of imaging appearances and diagnostic challenges, including congenital anomalies, benign cysts, infarcts, trauma, vascular lesions, infections and neoplasms. Recognising these entities is crucial to distinguish incidental benign findings from potentially life-threatening conditions. This pictorial review illustrates the spectrum through 20 cases, including a rare case of a wandering spleen complicated by torsion and auto-infarction that demonstrates the classical 'whorled pedicle' and 'twisted vascular pedic
