Evaluating the Hearing of Patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) occurs in 10-20% of the general population over 60 years of age, and its morbidity increases with age. Some research indicates that PEX may be a systemic disease. Some experts state that it can also lead to ear dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence and type of hearing disorders in patients with PEX. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 51 patients (102 eyes) hospitalized in Wroclaw Medical University Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology and scheduled for cataract surgery in 2012-2014

Concentration-Response Relationship of Hearing Impairment Caused by Quinine and Salicylate: Pharmacological Similarities but Different Molecular Mechanisms.

This review has the purpose to summarize concentration-effect studies made with quinine and to compare the effects on hearing between quinine and salicylate. Quinine and salicylate have roles in experimental hearing research and may induce pronounced and reversible hearing impairment when administered in sizeable doses. The quinine-induced increase in hearing threshold and its recovery can be analysed according to 'the psychophysical power function'. The power function is a special case of the Hill equation when the stimulus (e.g. a drug concentration) is exceedingly small compared with the co

Central hyperacusis with phonophobia in multiple sclerosis.

Hearing disorders are a well-described symptom in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Unilateral or bilateral hyperacusis or deafness in patients with normal sound audiometry is often attributed to demyelinating lesions in the central auditory pathway. Less known in MS is a central phonophobia, whereby acoustic stimuli provoke unpleasant and painful paresthesia and lead to the corresponding avoidance behaviour. In our comparison collective, patient 1 described acute shooting pain attacks in his right cheek each time set off by the ringing of the telephone. Patient 2 complained of intensifie

Symptoms, findings and treatment in patients with dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal.

Recently Minor and co-workers described patients with sound- and pressure-induced vertigo due to dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. Identifying patients with this 'new' vestibular entity is important, not only because the symptoms are sometimes very incapacitating, but also because they can be treated. We present symptoms and findings in eight such patients, all of whom reported pressure-induced vertigo that increased during periods of upper respiratory infections. Pulse-synchronous tinnitus and gaze instability during head movements were also common complaints. All patients latera

Evaluation of TEOAE and DPOAE measurements for the assessment of auditory thresholds in sensorineural hearing loss.

Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) can be quantified concerning their amplitude and frequency. They are known to be diminished or absent in sensorineural hearing loss. It is therefore of interest how TEOAE and DPOAE correlate with the auditory threshold and whether the auditory threshold can be predicted by these variables. In a cross sectional study of 61 patients (102 ears) with sensorineural hearing loss, auditory threshold, tympanometry, stapedius reflexes, TEOAE and DPOAE were measured. Correlation coefficients of the hear

Predicting most comfortable listening levels of ESRT from ECAP thresholds in paediatric cochlear implant users.

Studies have reported a varied correlation strength between the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) and electrically evoked stapedial reflex thresholds (ESRT) in cochlear implant recipients. However, there is a lack of information on the relationship between the two measures in paediatric cochlear implant users. This study was aimed to compare the ESRT and ECAP measures and determine where ECAP thresholds fall within the dynamic range of ESRT-based Maps in paediatric cochlear implant users. The study involved 40 children aged between 3 and 6 years and were implanted with MedEL

Tympanometric evaluation of Eustachian tube function in Polish scuba divers.

BACKGROUND: Scuba divers are subjected to relatively high ambient pressures while descending. Equalizing maneuvers (e.g., Valsalva) are necessary to open the Eustachian tube (ET) and allow air into the middle ear (ME) cavity. Insufficient opening of the ET leads to ME barotrauma, which is the most common injury related to scuba diving. The study aims were to assess the incidence of ME barotrauma and to compare tympanometric parameters and stapedial reflexes in scuba divers and non-diving individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS:: 60 scuba divers participated in the study; control consisted of 90 non

Division of the stapedial tendon results in noise-induced damage to the inner ear.

BACKGROUND: The effect of division of the stapedial tendon on susceptibility to noise-induced inner ear damage has not been previously studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of noise exposure following division of the stapedial tendon in guinea pigs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten adult albino guinea pigs were used. The stapedial tendon of each right ear was cut. The stapedial tendon in each left ear was left intact and these ears served as a control group. DPOAEs and ABR tests were performed before and 10 days after noise exposure. The animals were exposed to a 110-dB noise stimulus fo

Inner ear pressure in Menière's disease and fluctuating hearing loss determined by tympanic membrane displacement analysis.

Menière's disease and fluctuating hearing loss are related to labyrinthine fluid pressure variations. The development of a new indirect method of analysis of the tympanic membrane displacement during the stapedial reflex, using the Marchbanks Measurements System (MMS 10), allows us to study inner ear fluid pressure during these pathological conditions. In this study, measurements with this method were made in four groups of patients: a control group with normal hearing (n=7), stable sensorineural hearing loss (n=9), fluctuating hearing loss (n=8), and Menière's disease (n=25). Results show, fi

Effects of prolonged noise exposure in chinchillas with severed middle ear muscles.

Using the round window-recorded cochlear microphonic as the index of acoustic reflex activity, we noted a decay in the strength of middle ear muscle contraction in the chinchilla following an eight hour exposure to octave band noise (500 Hz. center frequency, 95 dB. sound pressure level). On the basis of this observation it was concluded that the prolonged exposure reduced the effectiveness of the acoustic reflex in protecting the cochlea. This reduction, however, may have been underestimated if the exposure was also sufficient to reduce cochlear output. The present investigation examined this

Genetic disposition to deafness in maternal rubella: fact or myth?

Eleven parental pairs, each having a child deaf from maternal rubella, were evaluated with a battery of specialized audiologic tests. The tests which included measurement of Békésy hearing threshold and the stapedial reflex threshold at 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 kHz were used to test the theory that these parents have a predisposition to elevated reflex thresholds, Békésy hearing threshold dips, and a history of familial deafness. The present study failed to find any history of familial deafness or Békésy dips. Elevated reflex thresholds were noted in seven couples. This proportion was shown to be sig

Multi-component and multi-frequency tympanometry: a comparison between cochlear implanted ear and non-implanted ear.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) surgery may alter middle ear structure and function, potentially affecting the measurement of the electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold (eSRT). This study aimed to investigate such alterations using multi-component and multi-frequency tympanometry. Specific objectives were to compare tympanometric findings, multi-component tympanogram patterns, and frequency-dependent changes in admittance (ΔY), susceptance (ΔB), conductance (ΔG), and phase angle (Δθ) between implanted and contralateral non-implanted ears. METHODS: Twenty-two paediatric participants
