Antagonistic activity of Bacillus altitudinis VUMS1 against ice-ice-associated Vibrio spp. and its biotechnological potential in seaweed-associated systems.

Ice-ice disease caused by pathogenic Vibrio spp. is a major constraint in the aquaculture systems of Kappaphycus alvarezii. The use of beneficial bacteria as biological control agents represents a sustainable alternative to chemical treatments in seaweed aquaculture. In this study, an endophytic bacterium isolated from healthy K. alvarezii thalli, designated VUMS1, was identified as Bacillus altitudinis based on 16 S rRNA gene analysis. VUMS1 exhibited strong antagonistic activity against Vibrio harveyi, V. owensii, and V. alginolyticus, producing inhibition zones ranging from 9.0 to 16.5 mm o

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci in bovine milk: Antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and associations with management practices in Brazil.

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci (NASM) are frequently isolated from bovine milk in cases of mastitis and IMI, as well as from extramammary environments. Despite advances in species-level identification of NASM, it is not consistently performed across studies, which may limit a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiological relevance. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive characterization of NASM isolated from bovine milk across Brazil's 5 major dairy-producing regions. Using MALDI-TOF MS, 309 NASM isolates obtained from cows with low and high SCC and from clinical mastit

Non-Touch Aseptic Technique Maintains Sterility of Antibiotic-Admixed Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid.

There is a paucity of data on the sterility of peritoneal dialysis fluid (PDF) after drug admixture. International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) guidelines suggest using sterile technique when admixing antibiotics; however, the degree of sterility remains unclear. This issue is most pertinent when preparing take-home PDF for outpatient treatment of peritonitis. This study compares the sterility of PDF admixed with antibiotics using a non-touch aseptic technique (NTAT) versus sterile technique.Groups of 8 PDF mixtures (1.5% Dianeal or Icodextrin [Baxter International Inc., Spring Grove

Comparative Assessment of the Microbiological and Histopathological Picture of the Implantation Zone of a Nanocellulose-based Biocomposite In Vivo.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Bone tissue defects remain one of the main challenges in modern traumatology, often requiring biocompatible materials to restore bone integrity and function. The development of nanostructured composites opens new opportunities for bone regeneration. In our previous study, a nanocellulose-based biocomposite showed the ability to accelerate bone repair and achieve complete closure of bone defects. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of this material on the microbial composition and inflammatory response at the implantation site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight rat

Deep facial mycosis due to Trichophyton verrucosum-molecular genetic identification of the dermatophyte in paraffin-embedded tissue-case report and review of the literature.

Deep trichophytosis is relatively uncommon. The infection of the bearded area is also known as sycosis barbae or tinea barbae and can be caused by various fungal species, most often zoophilic fungi. We report on an 80-year-old male patient with severe sycosis barbae who had no animal contact and was treated with systemic antibiosis without improvement. Microbial and mycological investigations using swabs from oozing lesions revealed Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Candida parapsilosis. Histology demonstrated fungal elements in hair follicles. Paraffin-embedded material was subjected to further

Development of novel antimicrobials with engineered endolysin LysECD7-SMAP to combat Gram-negative bacterial infections.

BACKGROUND: Among the non-traditional antibacterial agents in development, only a few targets critical Gram-negative bacteria such as carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii or cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Endolysins and their genetically modified versions meet the World Health Organization criteria for innovation, have a novel mode of antibacterial action, no known bacterial cross-resistance, and are being intensively studied for application against Gram-negative pathogens. METHODS: The study presents a multidisciplinary approach, including genetic

Intestinal microflora in early infancy: composition and development.

The neonatal intestinal microbiota is a complex ecosystem composed of numerous genera, species and strains of bacteria. This enormous cell mass performs a variety of unique activities that affect both the colonic and systemic physiology. Its primary activities include nutritive, metabolic, immunological and protective functions. Most studies of infants have been based on faecal samples using the classical plating techniques with culturing on specific media. The limitations of these methods must be taken into account when evaluating the varying results of the different studies. The establishmen

Cardiorenal Syndrome in a Kidney Transplant Recipient With High-Flow Arteriovenous Fistula and Mycotic Pneumonia.

The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a preferred access for haemodialysis (HD) in patients with end-stage renal disease. However, its haemodynamic effect on the heart is not negligible; it may cause or exacerbate heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, especially when the flow is excessively high. After the transplantation, a decrease in cardiac output leads to reduced kidney graft perfusion, which can result in the development of cardiorenal syndrome. The guidelines for managing AVF after transplantation are still not well defined, so care and surveillance are based on the experience of trans

Antibiofilm properties of 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-alkenylquinoline, a novel Burkholderia-derived alkaloid.

Biofilms are an important colonization mechanism employed by several microbial species to better establish themselves and monopolize the acquisition of resources across different environs. Some bacteria have evolved specialized metabolites that, when secreted, disrupt the formation and stability of biofilms generated by competing heterospecies, providing the producing organism with an ecological advantage. Soil-derived species are probable candidates for the identification of such compounds, given the intense level of competition that occurs within the terrestrial ecosystem. The MS14 strain of
