Hydrophobic ion pairing: lipophilicity improvement of anionic macromolecules by divalent cation mediated complex formation.

The aim of this study was to develop an alternative strategy to sufficiently increase the lipophilicity of anionic model macromolecules (MM) without the use of cationic counterions. Enoxaparin (ENO), insulin (INS) and poly-L-glutamic acid (PLG) were ion paired with anionic surfactants (sodium decanoate (DEC), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium stearate (SS) and sodium octadecyl sulfate (SOS)), mediated by divalent cations such as magnesium, calcium and zinc. Complexes were evaluated regarding their precipitation efficiency and logDn-butanol/water. SEDDS were developed, loaded with the comple

Over-expression of JcDGAT1 from Jatropha curcas increases seed oil levels and alters oil quality in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana.

The increasing consumption of fossil fuels and petroleum products is leading to their rapid depletion and is a matter of concern around the globe. Substitutes of fossil fuels are required to sustain the pace of economic development. In this context, oil from the non food crops (biofuel) has shown potential to substitute fossil fuels. Jatropha curcas is an excellent shrub spread and naturalized across the globe. Its oil contains a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids (about 78-84% of total fatty acid content) making the oil suitable for biodiesel production. Despite its high oil content,

History of L-carnitine: implications for renal disease.

L-carnitine (LC) plays an essential metabolic role that consists in transferring the long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) through the mitochondrial barrier, thus allowing their energy-yielding oxidation. Other functions of LC are protection of membrane structures, stabilizing a physiologic coenzyme-A (CoA)-sulfate hydrate/acetyl-CoA ratio, and reduction of lactate production. On the other hand, numerous observations have stressed the carnitine ability of influencing, in several ways, the control mechanisms of the vital cell cycle. Much evidence suggests that apoptosis activated by palmitate or stear

Subclinical vestibulo-cerebellar, anterior cerebellar lobe and spinocerebellar effects in lead workers in relation to concurrent and past exposure.

By computerized static posturography, the subclinical effects of past and concurrent lead absorption on the vestibulo-cerebellum (lower vermis), anterior cerebellar lobe and spinocerebellar afferent pathway were examined in 49 male chemical factory workers exposed to lead stearate (lead workers). Their concurrent blood lead (BPb) concentrations ranged from 7 to 36 (mean 18.0) microgram/100 g. In the past, their maximum BPb ranged from 11 to 113 (mean 47.7) micrograms/100 g; mean BPb was 7-52 (mean 23.5) micrograms/100 g; and cumulative BPb, defined as mean BPb x years of exposure, was 15-1268

Group B streptococcus bacteremia in nonpregnant adults.

BACKGROUND: We report the largest series of group B streptococcal (GBS) bacteremia cases reported at a single institution. METHODS: During a 10-year period (1985-1994), 90 GBS bacteremia cases (0.95% of significant bacteremic episodes) were detected. We describe the 51 episodes that occurred in nonpregnant adults for which enough clinical and microbiological information is available. RESULTS: Incidence of GBS has significantly increased during the study period (from 0.08 per 1000 admissions in 1985 to 0.3 per 1000 in 1994). Mean age of patients was 63.3 years (range, 21-88 years) and 53% wer

The effect of glucocorticosteroids on serum, liver, and lung vitamin A and retinyl ester concentrations.

Vitamin A and its active metabolites are important factors in promoting normal respiratory epithelial differentiation and growth. Glucocorticoids, often used to treat chronic lung diseases in infancy and childhood, are known to increase serum retinol concentrations. To determine the effects of exogenous steroids on serum retinol and retinol-binding protein concentrations (as well as on liver and lung total vitamin A, retinol, and retinyl ester concentrations), 32 weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four equal experimental groups. Eight animals were vitamin A sufficient and received

Temperature-dependent abnormalities of the erythrocyte membrane in porcine malignant hyperthermia.

The temperature dependence of ATPase activities and stearic acid spin label motion in red blood cells of normal and MH-susceptible pigs have been examined. Arrhenius plots of red blood cell ghost Ca-ATPase and calmodulin-stimulable Ca-ATPase activities were identical for both normal and MH erythrocyte ghosts. Arrhenius plots of Mg-ATPase activity exhibited a break (defined as a change in slope) at 24 degrees C in both MH and normal erythrocyte ghosts. However, below 24 degrees C the apparent activation energy for this activity was less in MH than normal ghosts. To determine whether breaks in A

Effect of Lipid Composition and Stirring Dynamics on Oxygen Microbubble Stability and Oxygen Release.

Lipid-coated oxygen microbubbles (OMBs) are being investigated for biomedical applications to alleviate hypoxia such as systemic oxygenation and image-guided radiosensitization therapy. Additionally, they hold potential for boarder application as oxygen carriers beyond the biomedical filed. Understanding the stability and oxygen release properties of OMBs in dynamic aqueous environments is critical for these applications. In this study, we found that OMBs composed of longer acyl chain phospholipids (DSPC and DBPC) were stable in storage for at least 1 week, unlike the shorter acyl chain phosph

Hepatic farnesyl diphosphate synthase expression is suppressed by polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Dietary vegetable oils and fish oils rich in PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) exert hypocholesterolaemic and hypotriglyceridaemic effects in rodents. The plasma cholesterol-lowering properties of PUFA are due partly to a diminution of cholesterol synthesis and of the activity of the rate-limiting enzyme HMG-CoA reductase (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase). To better understand the mechanisms involved, we examined how tuna fish oil and individual n-3 and n-6 PUFA affect the expression of hepatic FPP synthase (farnesyl diphosphate synthase), a SREBP (sterol regulatory element-binding p

Stabilizing the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) of Citrate-Synthesized Metal Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents.

Gold-silver nanoshells (GS-NSs) are hollow spherical nanoparticles with an alloyed Ag-Au shell. GS-NSs exhibit a tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible to near-IR wavelengths as a function of composition and shell thickness and offer greater stability across pH ranges compared to other metal nanoparticles. These properties make GS-NSs promising materials for diagnostics, photothermal therapy, and photocatalysis. However, current research has explored GS-NSs only in aqueous systems, since they immediately aggregate in other solvents, limiting their utility. This paper
