Developmental function of Piezo1 in mouse submandibular gland morphogenesis.

Mechanically activated factors are important in organogenesis, especially in the formation of secretory organs, such as salivary glands. Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1), although previously studied as a physical modulator of the mechanotransduction, was firstly evaluated on its developmental function in this study. The detailed localization and expression pattern of Piezo1 during mouse submandibular gland (SMG) development were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR, respectively. The specific expression pattern of Piezo1 was examined in acinar-forming epi

Establishment of a Mouse Submandibular Salivary Gland Organ Culture.

The salivary glands produce saliva and are important in maintaining oral health. Saliva keeps the mouth moist, cleanses the oral cavity, aids digestion, and has antibacterial properties. Saliva also helps in swallowing and speech. Investigating the development of the salivary glands is thus relevant in the context of both health and disease. Various cell culture methods have been used to study salivary gland development, including culturing cells in two dimensions (2D). Under physiological conditions, cells constantly interact with other cells and the extracellular matrix, which controls compl

Extremely Rare Case of Cavernous Haemangioma of Submandibular Gland.

INTRODUCTION: Haemangioma or hemangioendothelioma is amongst the commonest developmental, vascular lesions of infancy and childhood. Hemangioendothelioma of the salivary glands, however, is extremely rare. Due to their rarity, they may be misdiagnosed as lymphangiomas or other cystic lesions found more commonly in the region. This may lead to surgical complications including torrential hemorrhage that may have dire consequences for the patient. CASE REPORT: Herein we present the case of a nine-year-old male with a cavernous haemangioma involving the left submandibular gland which was diagnose

Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland: Case Report.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor that occurs mostly in the parotid gland. We report a case of EMC of the submandibular gland in a young man. The patient was aware of a slow-growing mass in the right submandibular gland for 1 year. Clinical examination and ultrasound confirmed a right submandibular mass, 2.5 × 3 cm2 in size. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration indicated a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma, which was also suggested by magnetic resonance imaging. The submandibular gland tumor was excised. Immunohistochemical analysis showed car

Thyroid carcinoma metastasizing to the submandibular gland: Sonographic findings.

Metastases to the submandibular gland are extremely rare; a literature search retuned only three previously reported cases from a thyroid gland primary site. Herein, we report two cases of metastatic thyroid carcinoma to the submandibular gland in a 64-year-old woman with PTC and a 70-year-old-woman with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The metastases were identified on CT and PET/CT in one case and on CT in the other case, but both were diagnosed with ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. Our cases highlight that while rare, both PTC and MTC can metastasize to the submandibular gland.

Avid 68Ga-PSMA Uptake in Accessory Submandibular Salivary Gland.

Accessory submandibular salivary gland (ASSG) is an extremely rare variation of the submandibular salivary gland. We reported a 65-year-old man with prostate cancer underwent Ga-PSMA PET/CT for active surveillance. The images showed abnormal PSMA uptake adjacent to the submandibular salivary gland without abnormal activity distribution in the rest regions of the body. The lesion density was similar to that of the submandibular salivary gland. Pathological biopsy confirmed that it was an ASSG. Our case illustrates that ASSG is an addition benign cause of extraprostatic uptake of PSMA.

Functional outcomes of the modified submandibular gland transfer procedure.

OBJECTIVES: Treatment for advanced head and neck cancers typically includes surgery followed by radiation therapy (RT). Radiation-induced xerostomia is a common sequela of these treatments. The modified submandibular gland transfer (M-SGT) procedure was developed to decrease xerostomia in the treatment of oral cavity cancer by sparing one submandibular gland (SMG) from radiation. This study's objectives were to: 1) elucidate the radiation-sparing capacity of the M-SGT, and 2) study the xerostomia-reducing potential of the M-SGT based on the University of Washington Quality-of-Life Questionnair

Submandibular gland actinomycosis: A rare disease - Worth to mention.

Cervicofacial actinomycosis (AM) is a well-documented entity; however, primary AM of the submandibular gland is infrequent. The diagnosis is difficult due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and it usually mimics chronic granulomatous infection or malignant lesion. We report the case of a young female with AM of submandibular gland, presented as recurrent infection of submandibular gland, underwent its excision and confirmed on microscopy as Actinomyces.

Preoperative evaluation and surgical planning of submandibular gland tumors.

BACKGROUND: Roughly half of submandibular gland neoplasms are malignant. Because preoperative information on the nature of these tumors remains limited, both preoperative evaluation and assessment of the extent of primary surgery warrant guidelines that are more accurate. METHODS: We evaluated the preoperative examinations and management of all submandibular gland neoplasms treated surgically at the Helsinki University Hospital between 2000 and 2010. RESULTS: Of the 83 tumors, 58 (70%) were benign and 25 (30%) were malignant. Of the benign tumors, 54 (93%) were pleomorphic adenomas. The cyto

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of cysticercosis in submandibular gland.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has emerged as simple, minimally invasive, low-cost, outpatient diagnostic modality for the evaluation of nodules caused by parasites. Cysticercosis is caused by larval stage of Taenia solium, pork tapeworm. It is endemic in Southeast Asia, Latin America and South Africa. We report a case of cysticercosis in a 25-year-old male who presented with painless swelling of submandibular gland which was diagnosed on FNAC. The patient was recommended antihelminthic therapy which resulted in complete resolution of the swelling.

Küttner Tumor: IgG4-Related Disease of the Submandibular Gland.

Küttner tumor/chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is a fibroinflammatory process that characteristically involves the submandibular gland of patients with IgG4-related disease. Histologic examination is often important to make the diagnosis because of its nonspecific clinical and radiologic findings. Microscopically, Küttner tumor should be distinguished from other entities such as extranodal marginal zone lymphoma, Sjögren's syndrome, and lymphoepithelial sialadenitis. The lesion is histologically well-demarcated with lobular architecture, extensive fibrosis, marked lymphoplasmacytic inflammation

Postoperative Submandibular Gland Swelling following Craniotomy under General Anesthesia.

Objective. Reporting of a rare case of postoperative submandibular gland swelling following craniotomy. Case Report. A 33-year-old male underwent resection for a brain tumor under general anesthesia. The tumor was resected via a retrosigmoid suboccipital approach and the patient was placed in a lateral position with his face down and turned to the right. Slight swelling of the right submandibular gland was observed just after the surgery. Seven hours after surgery, edematous change around the submandibular gland worsened and he required emergent reintubation due to airway compromise. The cause

Allogenic submandibular gland transplantation following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Autologous submandibular gland transfer for treatment of progressive dry eye symptoms requires a functionally intact submandibular gland. In cases of total function loss of both lacrimal and submandibular glands this procedure has to be modified. Here we report on the first two cases of the allogenic transplantation of a submandibular gland to treat patients suffering from complete functional loss of both glands due to graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) following stem cell transplantation. METHODS: We carried out allogenic transplantation of the submandibular gland of the matched fo

Choroidal metastasis from submandibular salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma.

A case of choroidal metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma ofsubmandibular salivary gland is described. A 50-year-old woman with loss of vision in her left eye for 1 week was evaluated clinically, radiologically, and pathologically. A fundus image of the left eye showed an amelanotic, plateau-shaped choroidal mass measuring 17 x 12 X 4 mm with overlying exudative retinal detachment. A choroidal biopsy was consistent with metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma from her submandibular salivary gland treated 5 years previously. She was treated with external beam radiotherapy but developed liver

Giant pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland. Case report.

Salivary glands are sites for a great variety of tumors. The parotid gland is the most common site followed by the submandibular gland. The pleomorphic adenoma represents the 60-70% of all tumors involving the major salivary glands, while the submandibular gland is involved in 8% of cases. The pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland is rare and can present difficulty in diagnosis. The heterogeneous histology, a possible malignant transformation, an incomplete capsule that can determine a recurrence, are the most important characteristics of pleomorphic adenoma. A complete surgical remov
