Non-nutritive sucking habits, dental malocclusions, and facial morphology in Brazilian children: a longitudinal study.

The aim of this longitudinal study was to assess the relationship between non-nutritive sucking habits and the presence of anterior open bites (AOBs) and posterior crossbites and their association with facial morphology among 4- to 6-year-old children attending state schools in the city of Recife, Brazil. The sample comprised 287 children, both males and females. The proportion of boys to girls was approximately 50 per cent. The average age was 4 years 5 months at the beginning and 6 years 6 months at the end of the study. Data were collected from interviews with mothers or carers, and the cli

Frenulotomy for breastfeeding infants with ankyloglossia: effect on milk removal and sucking mechanism as imaged by ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence that infants with ankyloglossia can experience breastfeeding difficulties including poor attachment to the breast, suboptimal weight gain, and maternal nipple pain, which may lead to early weaning of the infant. No studies have investigated the cause of these breastfeeding difficulties. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of frenulotomy in infants experiencing persistent breastfeeding difficulties despite professional assistance by measuring changes in milk transfer and tongue movement during breastfeeding before and after frenulotomy. Eating behaviors and feeding problems among school-aged children with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at increased risk of nutritional challenges due to distinctive eating behaviors and feeding problems. Therefore, this study aimed to assess eating behaviors and feeding problems among school-aged children with and without IDD in Saudi Arabia and explore differences across diagnostic subgroups. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between August and December 2024. A total of 168 school-aged children (68 with IDD and 100 without IDD) were recruited at the Child Development Center, University Hospital

Mapping the social network: tracking lice in a wild primate (Microcebus rufus) population to infer social contacts and vector potential.

BACKGROUND: Studies of host-parasite interactions have the potential to provide insights into the ecology of both organisms involved. We monitored the movement of sucking lice (Lemurpediculus verruculosus), parasites that require direct host-host contact to be transferred, in their host population of wild mouse lemurs (Microcebus rufus). These lemurs live in the rainforests of Madagascar, are small (40 g), arboreal, nocturnal, solitary foraging primates for which data on population-wide interactions are difficult to obtain. We developed a simple, cost effective method exploiting the intimate r

The effect of oral motor intervention with different initiation times to improve feeding outcomes in preterm infants: protocol for a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants commonly encounter difficulties with oral feeding, a complication that extends hospital stays, affects infants' quality of life, and imposes substantial burdens on families and society. Enhancing preterm infants' oral feeding skills and facilitating their transition from parenteral or nasal feeding to full oral feeding pose challenges for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) healthcare professionals. Research indicates that oral motor interventions (OMIs) can enhance preterm infants' oral feeding capabilities and expedite the transition from feeding initiation to f

Lingual frenotomy for breastfeeding difficulties: a prospective follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding difficulties are sometimes attributable to tongue-tie with short-term relief after frenotomy. Limited follow-up is available, and predictors for nonsuccessful frenotomy have not yet been found. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 264 mother-infant dyads who underwent lingual frenotomy for breastfeeding difficulties. Data regarding the indications, anatomy of the tongue, and the response of the infant were noted by the physician. Mothers were contacted by telephone at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after frenotomy to answer a questionnaire. RESULTS: Two weeks after

Updates on Obesity in Prader-Willi Syndrome: From Genetics to Management.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), which is considered the most common genetic form of obesity, results from the absence of imprinted genes in the paternally derived PWS critical region located on chromosome 15q11.2-13. Infants with PWS exhibit poor sucking, neonatal hypotonia, and delayed motor milestones. These patients begin to experience hyperphagia and obesity from 2 to 3 years of age. PWS is a multisystemic disorder, and its clinical manifestations include developmental delay/intellectual disability, behavioral problems, dysmorphic facial features, short stature, scoliosis, and endocrine abnor

[Clinical practice guidelines for Prader-Willi syndrome].

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the first multi-systemic genetic disorder known to be caused by imprinting defect. The clinical manifestations of PWS vary with age. At the prenatal stage, decreased fetal movements are frequent. The major clinical manifestations during neonatal period include hypotonia, weak cry, poor suck and feeding difficulties. Growth retardation and delayed language and motor development are observed during infancy. Short stature, small hands and feet, cognitive deficiency are noticed in the childhood. At adolescence, prominent growth retardation, obesity, gonadal dysplasia

A new case of interstitial 6q16.2 deletion in a patient with Prader-Willi-like phenotype and investigation of SIM1 gene deletion in 87 patients with syndromic obesity.

The association of obesity, phenotypic abnormalities and mental retardation characterizes syndromic obesity. Its most common form is the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS-- neonatal hypotonia, poor sucking, delayed psychomotor development, hyperphagia, severe obesity, short stature, small hands and feet, hypogonadism, mild to moderate mental retardation and behavioral disorders). A PWS-like phenotype has been described in patients with chromosome abnormalities involving the chromosome region 6q16.2 that includes the SIM1 gene. Herein we report cytogenetic and gene studies including a screening for th

Breastfeeding practices of infants with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RTS) is a rare disorder affecting 1 out of 300,000 people, characterized by broad thumbs and toes, distinctive facial features, hypotonia, and developmental delays. In this study, 180 members of an RTS parent group completed a survey that elucidated breastfeeding practices of infants with RTS. Fifty-nine percent of mothers initiated breastfeeding with an average duration of 7.1 months. Overall, 48% of the women reported that their child had a good to fair suck, and 50% were fairly to very pleased with the breastfeeding experience. Problems reported with breastfeeding

What we know and don't know about the development of independent ingestion in rats.

Because suckling behavior differs in many ways from later ingestive behavior, the development of feeding and drinking in rats is best studied apart from the normal suckling situation. Newborn rat pups, separated from their mothers, will actively ingest diet infused into their mouths or spread on the floor beneath them. Such "independent" ingestion resembles the ingestive behavior of adult animals, but it also undergoes developmental changes in organization and control during the pre- and post-weaning periods: When young, deprived pups are fed, they show generalized, non-directed behavioral exc

Milking of the Cut Cord During Stabilization of Infants Born Very Premature: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of cut-umbilical cord milking (C-UCM) during stabilization of preterm infants after birth. STUDY DESIGN: This was a pilot randomized controlled trial of initial resuscitation. Infants born to eligible, consenting women presenting in preterm labor at <32 weeks' gestation were randomized to receive either the standard practice of deferred cord clamping (DCC) for 30-60 seconds at birth or C-UCM while supporting breathing and following 30 seconds of DCC. The primary outcome was feasibility in terms of percentage recruitment, intervention compliance, safet

Frequency-modulated orocutaneous stimulation promotes non-nutritive suck development in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome or chronic lung disease.

OBJECTIVE: For the premature infant, extrauterine life is a pathological condition, which greatly amplifies the challenges to the brain in establishing functional oromotor behaviors. The extent to which suck can be entrained using a synthetically patterned orocutaneous input to promote its development in preterm infants who manifest chronic lung disease (CLD) is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a frequency-modulated (FM) orocutaneous pulse train delivered through a pneumatically charged pacifier capable of enhancing non-nutritive suck (NNS) activity in tube-f

Rethinking "posterior" tongue-tie.

Currently, many clinicians who help with breastfeeding problems are diagnosing "posterior" tongue-tie in infants and performing or referring for frenotomy. In this "Speaking Out" article, I argue that the diagnosis of "posterior" tongue-tie has successfully raised awareness of the importance of impaired tongue function in breastfeeding difficulty. However, the diagnosis of "posterior" tongue-tie also applies a reductionist, medicalized theoretical frame to the complex problem of impaired tongue function, risking unintended outcomes. Impaired tongue function arises out of multiple interacting a
