Emergence of virulent ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in meat with human health implications and control using liposomal cinnamon, oregano, and clove within a One Health framework.

Transmission of extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing (ESBL) Escherichia coli from meat and meat by-products to humans has emerged as a major public health issue, requiring a One Health framework to address this menace. Hence, we investigated the phylotypes, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and virulotypes of E. coli isolates from chicken meat, beef burger, and human stool samples, besides investigating the in vitro antimicrobial and antivirulence efficacies of liposomal cinnamon, oregano, and clove essential oils (LCOC). A total of 90 isolates (28.1%) were phenotypically and molecularly

The Healing Capability of Clove Flower Extract (CFE) in Streptozotocin-Induced (STZ-Induced) Diabetic Rat Wounds Infected with Multidrug Resistant Bacteria.

Treatment of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is of great challenge as it is shown to be infected by multidrug resistant bacteria (MDR bacteria). Sixty four bacterial isolates were isolated from DFU cases; antibiotic susceptibility tests were carried out for all of them. One bacterial isolate (number 11) was shown to resist the action of 8 out of 12 antibiotics used and was identified by both a Vitek-2 system and 16S rRNA fingerprints as belonging to Proteus mirabilis, and was designated Proteus mirabilis LC587231 (P. mirabilis). Clove flower extract (CFE) inhibited distinctively the P. mirabilis bac

Eugenia calycina Cambess extracts and their fractions: Their antimicrobial activity and the identification of major polar compounds using electrospray ionization FT-ICR mass spectrometry.

Eugenia calycina, which is described as "red pitanga or pitanga cherry of cerrado," is widely distributed in the Cerrado area of Brazil. Its leaf and bark extracts are used in folk medicine for many applications. In this study, the compositions of the major polar compounds of the bark and leaf extracts and their fractions were obtained from a liquid-liquid extraction using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and water. They were then evaluated using electrospray ionization negative FT-ICR mass spectrometry (ESI(-) FT-ICR MS), which revealed a large number of oxygen-containing compounds, su

Protection of clove extract against Salmonella enteritidis-induced intestinal dysfunction in broilers through JAK2/STAT3-mediated stem cell activation.

Salmonella enteritidis(SE) is a major pathogenic bacterium causing intestinal epithelial tissue damage in broiler chickens raised without antibiotic supplementation. Clove extract, as a natural antibacterial agent, possesses activity against bacterial invasion and improves intestinal health. However, the mechanism by which clove extract alleviates SE infection remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the protective effects of clove extract and its underlying mechanism against SE-induced intestinal damage. Experiment 1 determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ten plant ext

In vitro efficacy of five essential oils against Pediculus humanus capitis.

Treatment of head lice has relied mainly on the use of topical insecticides. Today, conventional topical pediculicides have suffered considerable loss of activity worldwide. There is increasing interest in the use of natural products such as essential oils for head louse control, and many of them are now incorporated into various over-the-counter products presented as pediculicides, often without proper evaluation. The aim of the present study was to assess the in vitro efficacy of five essential oils against adults of Pediculus humanus capitis using a contact filter paper toxicity bioassay. T

Active fraction of clove induces apoptosis via PI3K/Akt/mTOR-mediated autophagy in human colorectal cancer HCT-116 cells.

Previous studies by our group have demonstrated that extract of clove exhibits potent anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, the effect of an extracted and isolated active fraction of clove (AFC) on induction of cellular apoptosis in human colorectal cancer HCT-116 cells was investigated by morphological observation, flow cytometry, and western blotting analysis. The results revealed that AFC induced apoptosis of HCT-116 cells. AFC also induced autophagy, demonstrated by increased punctuate microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3) staining, and LC3-II an

Identification of E. dysenterica laxative peptide: a novel strategy in the treatment of chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Plants have contributed over the years to the discovery of various pharmacological products. Amongst the enormous diversity of herbs with remarkable medicinal use and further pharmacological potential, here in this report we evaluated pulp extracts from Eugenia dysenterica fruits and further identified the active principle involved in such laxative activity in rats. For protein isolation, fruits were macerated with an extraction solution following precipitation with (NH(4))(2)SO(4) (100%). After dialysis, the peptide was applied onto a reversed-phase semi-preparative HPLC column, and the major

Effect of food seasoning spices mixture on biomarkers of oxidative stress in tissues of fructose-fed insulin-resistant rats.

High fructose feeding in normal rats induces insulin resistance and also facilitates oxidative damage. The present study examines the effects of a spices mixture (SM) on oxidative stress markers and antioxidant potential in tissues of high fructose-fed insulin-resistant rats. Male Wistar rats received a semisynthetic diet containing either 60% fructose or 60% starch. SM administration at three different doses (10, 30, and 50 mg/day per rat) was initiated orally 15 days later and continued for the next 30 days. After the total experimental period of 45 days, peroxidation of lipids and antioxida

The traditional ayurvedic medicine, Eugenia jambolana (Jamun fruit), decreases liver inflammation, injury and fibrosis during cholestasis.

BACKGROUND: Cholestasis is a common disease of the liver. Chronic cholestasis eventually leads to hepatic cirrhosis and fibrosis, and rodent chronic cholestasis models are used to study aspects of fibrosis and cirrhosis. Cholestasis-induced liver injury and fibrosis are associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Few pharmacological therapies exist for treatment of cholestasis or cirrhosis, but it is known that humans with better nutritional intake are less likely to develop certain types of cirrhosis. Eugenia jambolana (Jamun) is a tropical berry fruit rich in antioxidant ant
