[Visual search in Alzheimer disease--an functional magnetic resonance imaging study].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the functional activation patterns during two types of visual search tasks in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with functional MRI, and probe the neuro-anatomic basis of visual attention. METHODS: 13 patients with AD and 13 sex and age-matched healthy subjects participated in the experiment designed with two visual search tasks. The first was a "pop-out" single feature task, detecting a vertical target among horizontal distractors, and the second was a conjunction task where the target was defined by conjunction of feature (color and orientation) and the performance depended

Visually guided voluntary actions boost short-term ocular dominance plasticity.

Short-term monocular deprivation transiently shifts ocular dominance in favor of the deprived eye. Here we asked whether the effect of a one-hour monocular deprivation was enhanced by the execution of a task requiring visually guided goal-directed actions, compared to a passive viewing condition where participants watched a replay of their own actions. Although the visual input was the same across conditions, we found a stronger ocular dominance shift when participants actively performed the task. These results provide strong evidence that voluntary, goal-directed actions modulate visual plast

Cognitive sequences in obsessive-compulsive disorder are supported by frontal cortex ramping activity.

Completing sequences is a routine part of daily life. Many are abstract, defined by a rule governing the order rather than the identity of individual steps (e.g., getting dressed). In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), excessive ritualistic behaviors suggest a disruption in abstract sequence completion. Executing abstract sequences requires at least two levels in a hierarchy of cognitive control: abstract sequential control (tracking steps) and task switching (shifting between tasks). While task switching has been studied in OCD, little is known in a sequential context. Understanding both hi

A Wearable Brain-Computer Interface for Mitigating Car Sickness via Attention Shifting.

Car sickness, an enormous vehicular travel challenge, affects a significant proportion of the population. Pharmacological interventions are limited by adverse side effects, and effective nonpharmacological alternatives remain to be identified. Here, we introduce a novel attention-shifting method based on a closed-loop, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven, wearable mindfulness brain-computer interface (BCI) to alleviate car sickness. As the user performs an attentional task, i.e., focusing on breathing as in mindfulness, with a wearable headband, the BCI collects and analyzes electroencephalogr

Effects of prefrontal tDCS on executive function: Methodological considerations revealed by meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis of studies using single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to target the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was undertaken to examine the effect of stimulation on executive function (EF) in healthy samples. 27 studies were included in analyses, yielding 71 effect sizes. The most relevant measure for each task was determined a priori and used to calculate Hedge's g. Methodological characteristics of each study were examined individually as potential moderators of effect size. Stimulation effects on three domains of EF (inhibition of prepotent responses, m

Prefrontal cortical GABAergic signaling and impaired behavioral flexibility in aged F344 rats.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critical for the ability to flexibly adapt established patterns of behavior in response to a change in environmental contingencies. Impaired behavioral flexibility results in maladaptive strategies such as perseveration on response options that no longer produce a desired outcome. Pharmacological manipulations of prefrontal cortical GABAergic signaling modulate behavioral flexibility in animal models, and prefrontal cortical interneuron dysfunction is implicated in impaired behavioral flexibility that accompanies neuropsychiatric disease. As deficits in behaviora

Evaluation of COSHH essentials: methylene chloride, isopropanol, and acetone exposures in a small printing plant.

The current study evaluated the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Essentials model for short-term task-based exposures and full-shift exposures using measured concentrations of three volatile organic chemicals at a small printing plant. A total of 188 exposure measurements of isopropanol and 187 measurements of acetone were collected and each measurement took approximately 60 min. Historically, collected time-weighted average concentrations (seven results) were evaluated for methylene chloride. The COSHH Essentials model recommended general ventilation control for both isopropa

Measuring subjective sleepiness at work in hospital nurses: validation of a modified delivery format of the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Sleepiness during the work shift is common and can be hazardous to workers and, in the case of nurses, to patients under their care. Thus, measuring sleepiness in occupational studies is an important component of workplace health and safety. The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) is usually used as a momentary assessment of a respondent's state of sleepiness; however, end-of-shift measurement is sometimes preferred based on the study setting. We assessed the predictive validity of the KSS as an end-of-shift recall measurement, asking for "average" sleepiness over the shift and "hi

Task-related reconfiguration patterns of frontoparietal network during motor imagery.

Motor imagery (MI) is closely associated with the frontoparietal network that includes prefrontal and posterior parietal regions. Studying task-related network reconfiguration after brain shifts from the resting state to the MI task is an important way to understand the brain's response process. However, how the brain modulates functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network when it shifts to MI has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, we attempted to characterize the frontoparietal network reconfiguration patterns as the brain transitioned to motor imagery tasks. We performed the

Delivering Rheumatic Heart Disease Diagnosis at Scale: Performance of an Integrated Public Health Screening Program in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Early echocardiographic detection improves rheumatic heart disease (RHD) outcomes, but screening in endemic, resource-limited settings remains a challenge. The Accelerating Delivery of Rheumatic Heart Disease Preventive Services in Northern Uganda program was developed to integrate task-shifted RHD screening into the existing health system in Kitgum, Uganda. We evaluated the program's impact on RHD case detection and assessed screening performance during its first year. METHODS: We conducted a programmatic evaluation of all individuals screened via the program from May 2023 to Apr

Digital Training for Lay Health Care Workers' Knowledge and Skills in HIV Index Case Testing: Cluster Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Task shifting in low-resource settings requires lay health care workers (HCWs) to provide a variety of health services, such as HIV index case testing, whereby sexual partners and family members of people living with HIV are offered HIV testing. For this, lay HCWs require adequate specialized training. Digital technologies hold promise for training lay HCWs in low-resource settings, but their impacts on improving knowledge, attitudes, and skills are not understood. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact of digital training on lay HCWs' knowledge, attitudes, and skills to provi

Compulsivity-related neurocognitive performance deficits in gambling disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Compulsivity is a core feature of addictive disorders, including gambling disorder. However, it is unclear to what extent this compulsive behavior in gambling disorder is associated with abnormal compulsivity-related neurocognitive functioning. Here, we summarize and synthesize the evidence for compulsive behavior, as assessed by compulsivity-related neurocognitive tasks, in individuals with gambling disorder compared to healthy controls (HCs). A total of 29 studies, comprising 41 task-results, were included in the systematic review; 32 datasets (n=1072 individuals with gambling disorder; n=13

Improving the neural mechanisms of cognition through the pursuit of happiness.

This paper reviews evidence on the neural basis of how positive mood states can modulate cognition, particularly during creative problem-solving. Studies performed over the past few decades demonstrate that individuals in a positive mood engage in a broader scope of attention, enhancing their access to distant and unusual semantic associations, and increasing task-shifting and problem-solving capacities. In this review, we summarize these behavioral studies; we then present recent findings on the changes in brain activation patterns that are induced by a positive mood when participants engage

Anti-Jo-1 antibody-positive arthropathy presenting as severe osteolysis of the distal interphalangeal joints.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a relatively common problem, but the neuropsychological profile of affected individuals has seldom been studied outside of criminal justice recruitment settings. Non-treatment-seeking young adults (18-29 years) were recruited from the general community by media advertisements. Participants with ASPD (n = 17), free from substance use disorders, were compared with matched controls (n = 229) using objective computerized neuropsychological tasks tapping a range of cognitive domains. Compared with controls, individuals with ASPD showed significantly elevate

Exploring the impact of unpredictability of household resources on infant attention.

Early environmental unpredictability has been linked to variation in cognitive and socioemotional development, yet its role in shaping foundational attentional processes during infancy remains poorly understood. The present study examined whether unpredictability in household resources is associated with individual differences in visual attention during the first year of life. A sociodemographically diverse sample of 160 infants aged 3-12 months completed a remotely administered free-viewing visual attention task. Infant eye-gaze behavior was assessed using webcam-based eye-tracking, yielding

Cortical network reconfiguration aligns with shifts of basal ganglia and cerebellar influence.

Mammalian functional architecture flexibly adapts, transitioning from integration where information is distributed across the cortex, to segregation where information is focal in densely connected communities of brain regions. This flexibility in cortical brain networks is hypothesized to be driven by control signals originating from subcortical pathways, with the basal ganglia shifting the cortex towards integrated processing states and the cerebellum towards segregated states. In a sample of healthy human participants (N=242), we used fMRI to measure temporal variation in global brain networ

No influence of sex on the relationship between schizotypy factors and executive control across the schizophrenia spectrum.

Sex differences in symptoms and executive control across schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are consistently reported. Similarly, these findings of sex differences are also observed in schizotypy, that is, schizophrenia-like features occurring in healthy individuals in the absence of a clinical diagnosis. This study aimed to examine the relationships between performance on three major domains of executive control: performance monitoring, response inhibition, and cognitive set-shifting, and schizotypy factor scores in both SSD patients and healthy controls (HCs), and whether sex moderated a

Modifiable lifestyle factors associated with cognitive functioning among college students.

Cognitive health is crucial for lifelong independence, yet public health initiatives often overlook young adults, despite the importance of modifiable lifestyle factors alongside non-modifiable risks like age and genetics. This study investigated the associations between social engagement, diet, physical activity, sleep, and alcohol use, and cognitive task performance in a sample of 126 college students. Participants completed a cognitive battery measuring performance on tasks of executive function indexed by inhibitory control and cognitive set-shifting, working memory, processing speed, verb

Adapting to scarcity: Plasticity in rural healthcare practice.

Rural healthcare practitioners face persistent challenges such as limited staffing, geographic isolation, and broad scopes of responsibility. These conditions require constant adaptation to ensure care delivery. This study introduces plasticity as a conceptual lens for understanding how rural healthcare teams collectively navigate scarcity through flexible role and task shifting. Drawing on constructivist grounded theory, we conducted 19 interviews with nurses and physicians in emergency departments in two rural communities in Ontario, Canada, to explore how plasticity functions in rural healt
