Assessment of Masticatory and Cervical Muscles' Thickness by Ultrasonography in Patients with Facial Asymmetry.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the thickness of masticatory and cervical muscles (temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid) and facial asymmetries in young patients. METHODS: 21 subjects were selected, through a detailed anamnesis and clinical examination, in order to assess the normality of oral tissues, the presence of normal occlusion, the absence of alteration in tooth dimensions and of congenital or developmental anomalies of lips, mouth or face. RESULTS: The present investigation showed that temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid mu

Pain sensitivity and pain reactivity of pericranial muscles in migraine and tension-type headache.

We investigated whether experimentally determined, suprathreshold pain sensitivity of pericranial musculature in patients with tension-type headache differs from that of migraine patients or from that of healthy subjects. Furthermore, we looked to see whether differences could be found in the effects of experimental pain induction on EMG activity of pericranial musculature and whether subgroups could be discovered with higher and lower pericranial pain sensitivity within the three diagnostic groups in terms of neurophysiological, psychological and clinical variables. In 20 patients with tensio

Inhibition of jaw-closing muscle activity by tactile air-jet stimulation of peri- and intra-oral sites in man.

There were two distinct periods of suppression in electromyograms of masseter and temporalis muscles in 8 subjects after light tactile stimulation (a puff of air) of the peri-oral zone; the latencies were 16 and 60 ms, respectively. These effects were similar to those induced by painful electrical stimulation. A single period of suppression with a latency of 50 ms, was evoked by tactile stimulation of the mucosa of the hard palate or of the tongue. Threshold for suppression was lower in mucosa than skin. Low-threshold and fast-adapting receptors are likely to be involved in this reflex inhibit

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masticatory muscles.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a disease in which muscular ossification develops following trauma. Almost all cases of MOT are found in skeletal muscle. The authors report in a 39-year-old man MOT involving several muscles in the head and neck, namely, bilateral masseter muscles, the left temporal muscle, the left lateral pterygoid muscle, and the left frontal muscle. Involvement of the lateral pterygoid muscle is especially rare.

Myringoplasty and tympanoplasty--results related to training and experience.

The results of surgery in a series of 452 ears having either myringoplasty (281 ears) or tympanoplasty (171 ears) were studied in relation to the experience of the surgeons. The trainees received an annual course in temporal bone dissection and were given daily surgical instruction in the operating theatre. The 142 ears operated by them showed less disease than those operated upon by the programme chairman (114 ears) and by the faculty (196 ears). The performance of the trainees was safe, and as to healed tympanic membrane and hearing results all studied parameters were statistically equal to

Anatomy and significance of the temporal fat pad in Apert syndrome.

Abnormal temporal region anatomy in Apert syndrome described in the literature includes inferior and lateral displacement of the middle cranial fossa, effacement of the temporal fossa, and thinning of the temporalis muscle. Four patients with Apert syndrome were noted to have hyperplasia of the bilateral superficial temporal fat pads, which could be contoured surgically. A case is presented with reformatted three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) scans with intraoperative documentation of increased temporal fat as compared to normal controls.

Zygomaticotemporal nerve passage in the orbit and temporal area.

Injury of the zygomaticotemporal nerve causes paresthesia in its distributed area, and its entrapment induces protractive pain in case of manipulation of the orbital lateral wall, a Gillies or Dingman reduction procedure for a zygomatic fracture, or an endoscopic subperiosteal facelift. The aim of this study was to elucidate the surgical anatomy of the zygomaticotemporal nerve in the orbit and temporal area. Twenty hemifaces from 10 adult Korean cadavers (10 male and 10 female) were used in the study. The zygomaticotemporal nerve ran along the lateral wall of the orbit, passed through the zygo

Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity: findings in headache.

Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity was proposed by Schoenen and co-workers in 1987 as a tool in headache diagnosis and research. Their finding of a decreased or abolished second silent period (ES2) in chronic tension-type headache sufferers has been confirmed by several independent laboratories during the last five years. Temporalis silent periods have also been studied in various other types of headaches. Their modulation by neuropsychological factors and pharmacological agents has also been investigated as well as their retest reliability. The pathophysiological concept

Use of temporalis fascia in eyelid reconstruction.

Full-thickness eyelid defects, as a result of trauma, continue to present a dilemma to the reconstructive surgeon. The authors present a technique of utilizing a temporalis fascia graft to hammock and support a nasal septal cartilage graft as part of reconstruction of the lower eyelid and the lateral canthus after traumatic avulsion. The static suspension afforded by the fascia helps produce proper apposition of the lower eyelid to the globe and provides lateral canthal support. This tissue implant is well tolerated in the eyelid and is readily available in the ophthalmic surgical field.

Masticatory features, EMG activity and muscle effort of subjects with different facial patterns.

It has been suggested that craniofacial morphology plays an important role in masticatory function, however, there are controversies and unsolved questions that still require elucidation. The aims of this study were to evaluate masticatory performance, mandibular movement, electromyographic (EMG) activity and muscle effort of masseter and anterior temporal muscles during mastication. Seventy-eight dentate subjects were selected and divided into three groups according to vertical facial pattern: brachyfacial, mesofacial and dolichofacial. Silicon-based material was used for chewing tests. Masti

Facial nerve danger zone in dermatologic surgery: temporal branch.

BACKGROUND: The principal function of cranial nerve 7 (CN VII), the facial nerve, is to provide motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression. The temporal branch of the facial nerve primarily innervates the frontalis muscle, which raises the eyebrow. OBJECTIVE: To present a case that illustrates the importance of facial nerve anatomy to skin surgery practice. CONCLUSION: The relevant surgical anatomy of the temporal branch is reviewed, as well as clinical practice points around nerve damage in skin surgery.

Muscle synergy patterns as altered coordination strategies in individuals with chronic low back pain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a highly prevalent disease with poorly understood underlying mechanisms. In particular, altered trunk muscle coordination in response to specific trunk tasks remains largely unknown. METHODS: We investigated the muscle synergies during 11 trunk movement and stability tasks in 15 healthy individuals (8 females and 7 males, aged 21. 3 (20.1-22.8) ± 0.6 years) and in 15 CLBP participants (8 females and 7 males, aged 20. 9 (20.2-22.6) ± 0.7 years) by recording the surface electromyographic activities of 12 back and abdominal muscles (six muscles unilate

Functional Evolution and Modular Behaviour in the Carnivoran Mandible.

The relationship between form and function holds a central spot in evolutionary biology, as the changes in such relationship through time, are likely to deeply influence how organisms adapt to the surrounding environment. However, anatomical structures may be interpreted as a compound of so-called "modules" which may respond differently to similar biomechanical demands. To understand the extent of how the form of a modular structure relate to biomechanical performance, we combined modern 3D shape analysis with phylogenetic comparative methods, to determine whether evolutionary rates of shape a

Bilateral reflex fracture of the coronoid process of the mandible. A case report.

Bilateral fractures of the coronoid process of the mandible occurred following a blow to the left temporal region in an assault. There was no evidence of direct trauma and the zygoma and other facial bones were intact. The probable cause was acute reflex contraction of the temporalis muscles leading to bilateral stress coronoid fractures. Conservative management was followed by complete resolution of symptoms.

Surface electromyographic and electroglottographic studies in normal subjects under two swallow conditions: normal and during the Mendelsohn manuever.

Surface electromyography (EMG) has been used successfully in teaching patients swallow maneuvers in clinical settings. The present study aims to determine if surface EMG can reliably demonstrate differences in muscle activity between the normal swallow and the Mendelsohn maneuver and whether there is a close temporal relationship between submental muscles and laryngeal elevation as demonstrated by electroglottography (EGG). Surface EMG was measured from five muscle groups (superior and inferior orbicularis oris, masseter, submental and infrahyoid) in 20 normal subjects under two swallowing con
