[Quantitative determination of the function of thin nerve fibers].

Quantitative assessment of thermal and pain sensitivity (Marstock method on a SOMEDIC Thermotest, Somedic AB Stockholm, Schweden) was made and the function of autonomic nervous system (sympathetic skin response and R-R interval variation) indicating the function of small nerve fibres (A-delta and C) was determined in 44 patients with symptoms of the presumed sensory neuropathy. The function of the large nerve fibres was evaluated by the classic nerve conduction study. The methods of small nerve fibres evaluation exhibited greater sensitivity as the classic nerve conduction study. The dysfuncti

The Status of Affected Infraorbital Nerve and Inferior Alveolar Nerve in Patients With Jaw Fibrous Dysplasia: A Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation.

The affected infraorbital nerve (IFBN) and inferior alveolar nerve (IFAN) status in patients with jaw fibrous dysplasia has not been definitely depicted. In this study, the authors try to explore the status of affected IFBN and IFAN in patients with jaw fibrous dysplasia. Ten patients with jaw fibrous dysplasia were included in this study. The complaints of numbness in the IFBA and IFAN innervated area were asked and recorded, and careful clinical examination was performed to evaluate the touch sense, pain sense, pressure sense, and temperature sense in the IFBA and IFAN innervated areas. Color of hot soup modulates postprandial satiety, thermal sensation, and body temperature in young women.

The color of food is known to modulate not only consumers' motivation to eat, but also thermal perception. Here we investigated whether the colors of hot soup can influence thermal sensations and body temperature, in addition to the food acceptability and appetite. Twelve young female participants consumed commercial white potage soup, modified to yellow or blue by adding food dyes, at 9 a.m. on 3 separated days. During the test, visual impression (willingness to eat, palatability, comfort, warmth, and anxiety) and thermal sensations were self-reported using visual analog scales. Core (intra-a

Psychometric functions for efficient and effective psychophysical testing of sensory function.

An efficient test for sensory function has been reported using random order pairs of real and sham stimuli. The constant magnitude of the real stimulus is chosen such that the first error in a patient's forced-choice report on the order of real and sham stimulation, immediately indicates abnormal sensory function. This magnitude just exceeds a critical large percentile of the psychometric function (i.e. the relationship between percentage of detection and stimulus magnitude in healthy subjects). The aim was to determine psychometric functions for one tongue site and six facial sites for adjust

Sensory transduction in human teeth with inflamed pulps.

The effects of pulpal inflammation on the sensitivity of dentin to cold (5°C) and negative hydrostatic pressure (-300 mm Hg) stimuli in man were compared, since recent evidence suggests that these stimuli excite different classes of sensory receptors. Dentin was exposed in premolars in 14 participants aged 15-25 years. Stimuli were applied to etched dentin immediately after cavity preparation and after the cavity had been filled with gutta percha for 7 days. This treatment increased significantly the intensity of pain produced by cold, and at the same time decreased that evoked by negative pre

Radiographic enlargement of mandibular canal as first feature of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has the propensity to affect non-lymphoid tissue including oral tissue. Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mandible mistreated as chronic periodontitis with diffuse enlargement of the mandibular canal and ice-cold numbness is very rarely described in English medical literature. A 57-year-old patient presented with a painful swelling on the left side of the mandible with a clinically chronic periodontitis associated with ice-cold numbness. A panoramic radiograph showed a diffuse uniform enlargement of the mandibular canal. Histological examination showed that the lesio

Does the chorda tympani nerve confer general sensation from the tongue?

OBJECTIVE: Patients often complain of numbness of the tongue after otologic procedures; this symptom may occur with or without taste alterations. The purpose of this study was to objectively assess possible changes in the general sensation of the tongue in patients undergoing middle ear surgery. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Thirty-three individuals were included in this prospective controlled clinical study conducted at a tertiary referral center. Fifteen patients underwent middle ear surgery and 18 volunteers served as a control group. Subjects underwent objective tests to assess general sensat

Normative values for female genital sensation.

OBJECTIVES: Neurologic disorders might be responsible for many cases of female sexual dysfunction. Yet, they are currently undiagnosed because of the lack of measurement tools to assess genital neural function. Therefore, our objective is to provide norms for sensory thresholds in the vagina and clitoris, for a wide range of patient ages. METHODS: Vaginal and clitoral warm, cold, and vibratory sensory thresholds were measured in 89 healthy paid volunteers by the method of limits. Normograms were derived from this group of healthy volunteers. An additional 61 patients were also tested, for a t

Congenital anosmia and subjective tactile function: A pilot study.

Anosmia, the complete loss of olfactory perception, has been associated with sensory compensation in non-chemical senses such as vision and hearing, but its relationship with tactile perception remains unclear. This study investigates whether isolated congenital anosmia (ICA)-a rare condition in which individuals are born without a sense of smell but are otherwise healthy-is linked to heightened self-reported tactile sensitivity compared to healthy controls. Drawing on sensory compensation theory and anecdotal evidence from related studies, we hypothesized that individuals with ICA would repor

Role of TRPM8 Channels in Altered Cold Sensitivity of Corneal Primary Sensory Neurons Induced by Axonal Damage.

The cornea is extensively innervated by trigeminal ganglion cold thermoreceptor neurons expressing TRPM8 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8). These neurons respond to cooling, hyperosmolarity and wetness of the corneal surface. Surgical injury of corneal nerve fibers alters tear production and often causes dry eye sensation. The contribution of TRPM8-expressing corneal cold-sensitive neurons (CCSNs) to these symptoms is unclear. Using extracellular recording of CCSNs nerve terminals combined with in vivo confocal tracking of reinnervation, Ca2+ imaging and patch-

Mechano- and thermosensitivity of injured muscle afferents 20 to 80 days after nerve injury.

Chronic injury of limb nerves leading to neuropathic pain affects deep somatic nerves. Here the functional properties of injured afferent fibers in the lateral gastrocnemius-soleus nerve were investigated 20 and 80 days after suturing the central stump of this muscle nerve to the distal stump of the sural nerve in anesthetized rats. Neurophysiological recordings were made from afferent axons identified in either the sciatic nerve (87 A-, 63 C-fibers) or the dorsal root L4/L5 (52 A-, 26 C-fibers) by electrical stimulation of the injured nerve. About 70% of the functionally identified A-fibers h

KCNQ channels in nociceptive cold-sensing trigeminal ganglion neurons as therapeutic targets for treating orofacial cold hyperalgesia.

BACKGROUND: Hyperexcitability of nociceptive afferent fibers is an underlying mechanism of neuropathic pain and ion channels involved in neuronal excitability are potentially therapeutic targets. KCNQ channels, a subfamily of voltage-gated K(+) channels mediating M-currents, play a key role in neuronal excitability. It is unknown whether KCNQ channels are involved in the excitability of nociceptive cold-sensing trigeminal afferent fibers and if so, whether they are therapeutic targets for orofacial cold hyperalgesia, an intractable trigeminal neuropathic pain. METHODS: Patch-clamp recording t

Assessment of pain sensitivity in patients with deep bite and sex- and age-matched controls.

AIMS: To compare pain sensitivity between deep bite patients and a sex- and age-matched control group with normal occlusion. METHODS: Pain sensitivity was assessed by injections of the excitatory amino acid glutamate into the masseter and brachioradialis muscles. Intensity of glutamate-evoked pain was scored by the subjects ( n = 60) on a 0 to 10 cm visual analog scale. Subjects drew the perceived pain area on a face and arm chart and described the quality of pain on the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Thresholds for cold detection, cold pain, cold tolerance, warmth detection, heat pain, and heat

Post-bariatric abdominoplasty: skin sensation evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The number of bariatric surgeries is progressively increasing in the USA and in Brazil. The number of post-bariatric plastic surgeries also increases as a response to this phenomenon. Abdominoplasties performed in former morbidly obese patients present a larger number of postoperative complications. Studies show that abdominoplasty caused postoperative skin hypesthesia. This study aims at evaluating skin sensibility/sensation in post-bariatric patients submitted to anchor-line abdominoplasty with clinical, qualitative, reliable and reproductive methods. METHODS: Thirty-nine former

Expression changes of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor in a rat model of neuropathic pain.

To reveal roles of neurotrophic factors in plastic changes of the primary afferent neurons following nerve injury, we investigated expression of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) as well as nerve growth factor (NGF) in a neuropathic pain model of the rat. The rats exhibited hyperalgesia and allodynia on the injured left side for at least 2 weeks after chronic constrictive injury to the sciatic nerve. Accompanied by the behavioral changes, expression of GDNF decreased in the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and the sciatic nerve on the injured side on the fourteenth day after the sur

Sensory neuropathy in hereditary spastic paraplegia.

A large kinship is reported with dominantly inherited spastic paraplegia starting in the first decade of life; its clinical evolution was indistinguishable from that of "pure" hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). However, all patients studied had electrophysiological evidence of a predominantly sensory polyneuropathy, which was confirmed on nerve biopsy in three. The histological findings indicated virtually complete loss of large diameter fibres with relative preservation of small myelinated and non-myelinated fibres. The neuropathy was largely asymptomatic and there were no trophic ulcers. T

Viewing facial expressions of pain engages cortical areas involved in the direct experience of pain.

Recent neuroimaging and neuropsychological work has begun to shed light on how the brain responds to the viewing of facial expressions of emotion. However, one important category of facial expression that has not been studied on this level is the facial expression of pain. We investigated the neural response to pain expressions by performing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as subjects viewed short video sequences showing faces expressing either moderate pain or, for comparison, no pain. In alternate blocks, the same subjects received both painful and non-painful thermal stimulatio

Quantitative thermosensory testing of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves in health and after iatrogenic injury.

Quantitative testing of the sensory thermal thresholds testing was applied at sites innervated by the third division of the trigeminal nerve in 20 patients with no reported sensory impairment and in 20 subjects with iatrogenic nerve injuries after third molar surgery. In the control group sensitivity to cooling was significantly greater than the sensitivity to warming at all sites. The labial mucosa innervated by the inferior alveolar nerve was significantly more sensitive to thermal changes than either the mental region or the lingual mucosa. At sites supplied by nerves that had been injured,
