Seeing, hearing, and feeling causation.

How do people decide whether one event caused another? While previous research has focused on visual and auditory cues in causal perception, the role of touch remains underexplored. Here, we investigate how haptic feedback contributes to causal judgments across three psychophysical experiments. In Experiment 1, we introduced force-based haptic feedback to a visual launching paradigm and found that haptic information increased causal judgments compared to visual feedback alone. Experiment 2 combined vision, audio, force-based haptics, and vibrotactile haptics, revealing that additional sensory

Multimodal mental comparisons in those with and without aphantasia.

People self-report a vast range of mental imagery experiences, from vivid and realistic to none whatsoever (i.e., aphantasia). Aphantasia aside, quantifying and measuring individual differences in mental imagery skill remains a significant challenge, with research reliant on the self-report Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ). Currently, there are very few behavioural tasks measuring mental imagery, hence we used the mental comparisons task (MCT - Suggate, 2024) in which participants mentally compare a visual, auditory, or tactile property of stimuli in the physical absence of tho

A putative model of multisensory object representation.

This review surveys the recent literature on visuo-haptic convergence in the perception of object form, with particular reference to the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and discusses how visual imagery or multisensory representations might underlie this convergence. Drawing on a recent distinction between object- and spatially-based visual imagery, we propose a putative model in which LOtv, a subregion of LOC, contains a modality-independent representation of geometric shape that can be accessed either bottom-up from direct sensory inputs or top-down from fro

The role of surface information in object recognition: studies of a visual form agnosic and normal subjects.

Three experiments were conducted to explore the role of colour and other surface properties in object recognition. The effects of manipulating the availability of surface-based information on object naming in a patient with visual form agnosia and in two age-matched control subjects were examined in experiment 1. The objects were presented under seven different viewing conditions ranging from a full view of the actual objects to line drawings of those same objects. The presence of colour and other surface properties aided the recognition of natural objects such as fruits and vegetables in both

Amusia due to rhythm agnosia in a musician with left hemisphere damage: a non-auditory supramodal defect.

A case of a severe receptive and expressive amusia in a professional musician following a left hemisphere vascular stroke is reported. Recognition and production of single tones and random tone sequences were found to be surprisingly well preserved. In contrast, the recognition and production of simple rhythm patterns were grossly disturbed. It is suggested that amusia is due to the demonstrated rhythm disturbance. Moreover, it has been found that the defect in recognition and reproduction of rhythms was manifested regardless of the modality of perception, i.e. whether rhythm patterns were per

Higher frequency of paronychia (nail bed infections) in pediatric and adolescent patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus than in non-diabetic peers.

OBJECTIVE: Paronychia occurs frequently in adolescents, but there are no data about its prevalence in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). We investigated the presence and characteristics of nail-bed infections in a group of adolescent patients with DM1 aged 10-20 years. METHODS: Ninety-three children and adolescents with DM1 and 100 healthy age-matched controls were studied using a structured questionnaire. Frequency, duration and treatment of paronychia and, in the DM1 group, duration of DM, mean HbA1c, frequency of hypoglycemia, footwear and foot care were evaluated. All patien

Perception and Attitude about Child Sexual Abuse among Vietnamese School-Age Children.

Child sexual abuse has become a significant public health concern in Vietnam in recent years, and the likelihood of being abused could be prevented by increasing the awareness of sexual abuse and self-protection skills among children. However, little is known about the perception and attitude of schoolchildren toward this issue in Vietnam. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of school-age children toward child sexual abuse and the risk factors affecting their knowledge and attitude. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 800 Vietnamese students from grades four to nine

Intact visual imagery and impaired visual perception in a patient with visual agnosia.

Although it is now well accepted that visual mental imagery and visual perception share common underlying mechanisms, there are several reports in which they are dissociated. Evidence for the separability of these processes is provided by a patient, C.K., who has a profound visual object recognition deficit attributable to an impairment in grouping or segmenting visual images. Despite this perceptual deficit, C.K. was able to draw objects in considerable detail from memory, and his knowledge of the visual appearance of objects was preserved on a variety of mental imagery tasks. Together with p

Mind the gap: the temporal discrimination threshold of tactile sensation from implanted peripheral nerve stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The ability to reliably detect the temporal order, overlap, and gaps between multiple tactile stimuli is crucial for making sense of our haptic interactions with complex environments. One important property of temporal processing of touch is the temporal discrimination threshold (TDT), which measures the shortest gap between two sequential stimuli required for them to be perceived as separate events. While the temporal properties of natural somatosensation are well understood, much less is known about the temporal properties of sensation elicited by peripheral nerve stimulation (PN

Oxytocin facilitates human touch-induced play behavior in rats.

Pleasant touch sensations play a fundamental role in social bonding, yet the neural mechanisms underlying affinity-like behaviors remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that juvenile-adolescent rats, which naturally engage in social play with peers characterized by rough-and-tumble interactions and 50 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations indicating pleasant sensations, develop a strong affinity for human hands through similar playful contact achieved by repeated tickling with human hands. Using this rat with tickling-induced high affinity for human hands, we discovered that repeated tickling m

Drawing the Line: Wearable Linear Haptics Motivated by Guided Breathing.

Haptic wearables provide an intuitive human-machine interface to convey information through the sense of touch, which may have promising applications in guided breathing. In this paper, we detail the design and evaluation of three wearable prototypes (Vibration, Skin Drag, and Tapping) capable of administering discrete (individual, separate pulses and stimuli). and continuous (overlapping or uninterrupted stimuli) forms of linear haptic cycles with inspiration from slow, deep guided breathing. Characterization was performed to quantify and validate the performance of six haptic stimuli (discre

Aerial Push-Button With Two-Stage Tactile Feedback Using Reflected Airborne Ultrasound Focus.

We developed a new aerial push-button with tactile feedback using focused airborne ultrasound. This study has two significant novelties compared to past related studies: 1) ultrasound emitters are equipped behind the user's finger and reflected ultrasound emission that is focused just above the solid plane placed under the finger presents tactile feedback to a finger pad and 2) tactile feedback is presented at two stages during pressing motion; at the time of pushing the button and withdrawing the finger from it. The former has a significant advantage in apparatus implementation in that the in

Tactile stimulation designs adapted to clinical settings result in reliable fMRI-based somatosensory digit maps.

Movement constraints in stroke survivors are often accompanied by additional impairments in related somatosensory perception. A complex interplay between the primary somatosensory and motor cortices is essential for adequate and precise movements. This necessitates investigating the role of the primary somatosensory cortex in movement deficits of stroke survivors. The first step towards this goal could be a fast and reliable functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)-based mapping of the somatosensory cortex applicable for clinical settings. Here, we compare two 3 T fMRI-based somatosensory

Functional mapping of the somatosensory cortex using noninvasive fMRI and touch in awake dogs.

Dogs are increasingly used as a model for neuroscience due to their ability to undergo functional MRI fully awake and unrestrained, after extensive behavioral training. Still, we know rather little about dogs' basic functional neuroanatomy, including how basic perceptual and motor functions are localized in their brains. This is a major shortcoming in interpreting activations obtained in dog fMRI. The aim of this preregistered study was to localize areas associated with somatosensory processing. To this end, we touched N = 22 dogs undergoing fMRI scanning on their left and right flanks using a

EEG-Based Validation of Neural Response Similarity Between Vibration and Electrical Stimulation for Virtual Tactile Feedback.

Electrical stimulation virtual vibration is widely used in fields like virtual reality and medical rehabilitation. However, its parameter optimization still relies on subjective psychological evaluation. This approach lacks objective quantitative criteria. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the neural response relationship between low-frequency vibration stimulation and electrical stimulation using EEG technology, providing quantitative theoretical support for optimizing electrical stimulation parameters. This paper employs a custom-built electrical stimulation system (incorporating a

Spontaneous epidermal stimulation briefly and diffusely enhances skin spatial acuity in shooting athletes: Evidence from event-related potentials.

BACKGROUND: Tactile sensation is crucial because it provides information about objects during fine-motor actions. Skin stimulation has a wide range of effects, including analgesia, cognitive enhancement, and endocrine modulation. However, very few studies have investigated the effects of spontaneous epidermal stimulation (SES) on tactile sensation, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: To explore the neural mechanisms of SES-induced enhancement of skin spatial acuity (SSA), we conducted 2 experiments on 40 healthy young shooters, combining the gate-control theory, heart rate

Unraveling tactile and proprioceptive upper limb function in children with unilateral cerebral palsy: a combination of robotic and clinical assessments.

PURPOSE: To map somatosensory impairments in the more-impaired and less-impaired upper limb of children with unilateral cerebral palsy (uCP) compared to typically developing children (TDC), using clinical and robotic assessments. Additionally, we explored which subgroups of children with uCP are more likely to experience somatosensory impairments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 49 children with uCP (11y11m ± 2y10m, 26 males) and 49 age- and sex-matched TDC (11y10m ± 2y10m). Role of arm reaching movement kinematics in friction perception at initial contact with smooth surfaces.

When manipulating objects, humans begin adjusting their grip force to friction within 100 ms of contact. During motor adaptation, subjects become aware of the slipperiness of touched surfaces. Previously, we have demonstrated that humans cannot perceive frictional differences when surfaces are brought in contact with an immobilised finger, but can do so when there is submillimeter lateral displacement or subjects actively make the contact movement. Similarly, in, we investigated how humans perceive friction in the absence of intentional exploratory sliding or rubbing movements, to mimic object

Pure associative tactile agnosia for the left hand: clinical and anatomo-functional correlations.

Associative tactile agnosia (TA) is defined as the inability to associate information about object sensory properties derived through tactile modality with previously acquired knowledge about object identity. The impairment is often described after a lesion involving the parietal cortex (Caselli, 1997; Platz, 1996). We report the case of SA, a right-handed 61-year-old man affected by first ever right hemispheric hemorrhagic stroke. The neurological examination was normal, excluding major somaesthetic and motor impairment; a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the presence of a rig

Compelling People to Move: Recent Progress in Haptic Technologies for Human Motion Induction in IEEE Transactions on Haptics.

Inducing human motion through haptic feedback is a long-standing objective in haptics research. Traditionally, such interaction has relied on mechanical systems that physically apply forces to the body using motors, linkages, or grounded devices. However, recent studies published in IEEE Transactions on Haptics have increasingly explored alternative approaches that evoke force or motion perception through relatively small physical stimuli. These techniques leverage perceptual characteristics of the human sensorimotor system to create compelling sensations of pulling, torque, or movement withou
