MR imaging of the thoracic aorta in Marfan patients.

A characteristic shape of the ascending aorta has been reported in patients with Marfan syndrome. To evaluate the capability of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to distinguish between marfanoid and other aortic aneurysms, 11 Marfan patients (group 1), eight patients with ascending aorta enlargement (group 2), and 20 normal subjects (group 3) had transverse and sagittal MR of the thoracic aorta. Aortic diameter was measured at the sinuses of Valsalva (SV), the caudal portion of the ascending aorta, the prearch region (PA), the middle arch, and the descending aorta. The ratio SV/PA was significan

Influence of clinical, anatomical, and manometric factors on unilateral transverse sinus stent placement for idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: Venous sinus stent placement is an increasingly common endovascular technique for treating medically refractory symptoms related to idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Given that data suggest that a considerable number of patients experience symptom relapse or recurrence, understanding prognosticators of treatment failure is of particular interest. METHODS: The authors performed a single-center retrospective review of the medical records of surgically naive patients with IIH who underwent unilateral transverse sinus stent (TSS) placement. Pre-stent clinical, anatomical, and

Complication Rates During Endoscopic Microvascular Decompression Surgery Are Low With or Without Petrosal Vein Sacrifice.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic-microvascular decompression (E-MVD) is a well-described treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TGN), but there has been debate on the safety of intraoperative sacrifice of the petrosal vein (PV) due to concern for subsequent venous insufficiency. Our objective was to investigate the risk of PV sacrifice during E-MVD in TGN and subsequent postoperative complications and pain outcomes. METHODS: 5 five-year review yielded 201 patients who underwent MVD for TGN. PV sacrifice, vascular compressive anatomy, and postoperative complications attributable to venous insufficiency were

Computed tomography and cross-sectional anatomy of the head in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a universally widespread wild carnivore in the world. It has an important impact on human interests and plays a vital role in conservation biology. There is no report to describe computed tomography (CT) of the red fox head and its correlation with gross anatomy. Therefore, the intent of the present study was to document, by CT, the basic anatomical structures in the head region of the red fox to lay the groundwork of an appropriate anatomical description of the head structures comparable with traditional dissection technique. Three red fox heads were imaged sagi

Clinical and angiographic results of patients with dural arteriovenous fistula.

Endovascular embolization has been regarded as the primary treatment for dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF). The aim of this study was to describe our experience with treatment and outcomes for patients with dural AVF, and to determine optimal treatment modalities. Between November 2007 and March 2011, 43 patients with dAVF (14 cavernous sinus, 20 transverse-sigmoid sinus, and nine patients with other types) were admitted to our Institute for treatment. For cavernous sinus dAVF, transvenous embolization was attempted as the first-line treatment with residual AVF obliterated by transarterial em

Expression of angiogenic growth factors in dural arteriovenous fistula.

OBJECT: Although various mechanisms of the development of dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) have been described, the exact course of its pathogenesis, including molecular processes mediating its genesis, is still unknown. Recently, the importance of sinus thrombosis and venous hypertension has been reported in experimental and clinical studies. Additionally, a role of angiogenic growth factors in the pathogenesis of vascular malformations of the central nervous system has been reported. In this study, the authors investigated the existence of sinus thrombosis in dural AVF and the expression of

Identifying High-Risk Patients With Cerebral Venous Thrombosis for Early Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis presents with diverse clinical features, making early recognition of patients at risk for deterioration challenging. The cerebral venous thrombosis score was developed by our group and later renamed the CLOTS-EVT score as a mnemonic to facilitate recall and improve ease of clinical use. This 10-point tool, including decreased consciousness (C), low platelets and sodium (L), absence of oral contraceptive use (O), thrombosis burden >3 sinuses (T), seizure (S), and papilledema (E), was developed to predict early deterioration and guide timely venous thrombec

Repair of the aortic valve in patients with aortic insufficiency and aortic root aneurysm.

Patients with aneurysms of the ascending aorta or aortic root frequently have aortic insufficiency despite normal aortic leaflets. The aortic valve dysfunction is caused by dilatation of the sinotubular junction, distortion or dilatation of the sinuses of Valsalva, annuloaortic ectasia, or a combination of these problems. In the case of annuloaortic ectasia, reconstruction of the aortic root is performed by reimplanting the aortic valve in a tubular Dacron graft (reimplantation). In the case of mild or no annuloaortic ectasia, reconstruction of the aortic root is performed by correcting the di
