Risk assessment of exposure to volatile organic compounds in different indoor environments.

The lifetime cancer risks of exposure of cooks and food service workers, office workers, housewives, and schoolchildren in Hong Kong to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in their respective indoor premises during normal indoor activities were assessed. The estimated cancer risk for housewives was the highest, and the second-highest lifetime cancer risk to VOC exposure was for the groups of food service and office workers. Within a certain group of the population, the lifetime cancer risk of the home living room was one to two orders of magnitude higher than that in other indoor environments. T

Disinfection byproducts inhibit methane production and emissions in WWTP effluents and receiving rivers.

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents are an important source of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in urban waters; however, their potential influence on riverine methane (CH4) dynamics remains unclear. By combining field investigations with microcosm experiments, this study examined the associations between typical DBPs and dissolved CH4 concentrations and diffusive fluxes in WWTP-receiving rivers and evaluated the effects of haloacetic acids (HAAs) on sediment CH4 production. Field monitoring showed that the annual average concentrations of haloacetic acids (HAAs), trihalomethanes (THMs)

Exposures to Drinking Water Contaminants in Community Water Systems and Risk of Ovarian Cancer in the California Teachers Study Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Several drinking water contaminants are known or suspected carcinogens; however, there are only a few investigations of drinking water exposure and ovarian cancer. We evaluated associations between regulated contaminants in community water systems (CWS) and ovarian cancer risk in the California Teachers Study, a prospective cohort of female California educators. METHODS: Participants were cancer-free, without bilateral oophorectomy, living in California at baseline (1995-1996) with geocoded addresses linked to a CWS (N = 91,127, 92%), with follow-up through 2020 (mean = 19.0 years

Water Quality Trade-offs for Risk Management Interventions in a Green Building.

Premise plumbing water quality degradation has led to negative health impacts from pathogen outbreaks (e.g., Legionella pneumophila and non-tuberculous mycobacteria), as well as chronic effects from exposure to heavy metals or disinfection by-products (DBP). Common water quality management interventions include flushing, heat shock (thermal disinfection), supplemental disinfection (shock or super chlorination), and water heater temperature setpoint change. In this study, a Legionella pneumophila- colonized Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building was monitored to

Drinking water disinfection by-products during pregnancy and child neuropsychological development in the INMA Spanish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Disinfection by-products (DBPs) constitute a complex mixture of prevalent chemicals in drinking water and there is evidence of neurotoxicity for some of them. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the association between estimates of DBP exposure during pregnancy and child neuropsychological outcomes at 1 and 4-5years of age. METHODS: We conducted a population-based mother-child cohort study in Spain with recruitment at first trimester of gestation (INMA Project, 2003-2008). Neuropsychological development was measured at 1year of age using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and at 4-5yea

Drinking water source and exposure to regulated water contaminants in the California Teachers Study cohort.

BACKGROUND: Pollutants including metals/metalloids, nitrate, disinfection byproducts, and volatile organic compounds contaminate federally regulated community water systems (CWS) and unregulated domestic wells across the United States. Exposures and associated health effects, particularly at levels below regulatory limits, are understudied. OBJECTIVE: We described drinking water sources and exposures for the California Teachers Study (CTS), a prospective cohort of female California teachers and administrators. METHODS: Participants' geocoded addresses at enrollment (1995-1996) were linked to

NTP Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of bromodichloromethane (CAS No. 75-27-4) in male F344/N rats and female B6C3F1 mice (Drinking Water Studies).

UNLABELLED: Bromodichloromethane is a by-product of the chlorination of drinking water. It is formed by the halogen substitution and oxidation reactions of chlorine with naturally occurring organic matter (e.g., humic or fulvic acids) in water containing bromide. Bromodichloromethane has been shown to be carcinogenic at multiple sites in rats (large intestine and kidney) and in mice (liver and kidney) after administration by gavage in corn oil. To further characterize its dose-response relationships for evaluations of human risk, bromodichloromethane was nominated to the NTP by the United Stat

DNA damage and micronuclei induced in rat and human kidney cells by six chemicals carcinogenic to the rat kidney.

Six chemicals, known to induce kidney tumors in rats, were examined for their ability to induce DNA fragmentation and formation of micronuclei in primary cultures of rat and human kidney cells, and in the kidney of intact rats. Significant dose-dependent increases in the frequency of DNA single-strand breaks and alkali-labile sites, as measured by the Comet assay, and in micronuclei frequency, were obtained in primary kidney cells from both male rats and humans of both genders with the following subtoxic concentrations of five of the six test compounds: bromodichlorometane (BDCM) from 0.5 to 4

Formation of toxic iodinated disinfection by-products from compounds used in medical imaging.

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) were investigated as a source of iodine in the formation of iodo-trihalomethane (iodo-THM) and iodo-acid disinfection byproducts (DBPs), both of which are highly genotoxic and/or cytotoxic in mammalian cells. ICM are widely used at medical centers to enable imaging of soft tissues (e.g., organs, veins, blood vessels) and are designed to be inert substances, with 95% eliminated in urine and feces unmetabolized within 24 h. ICM are not well removed in wastewater treatment plants, such that they have been found at elevated concentrations in rivers and streams

Chlorination disinfection byproducts in water and their association with adverse reproductive outcomes: a review.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Chlorination has been the major disinfectant process for domestic drinking water for many years. Concern about the potential health effects of the byproducts of chlorination has prompted the investigation of the possible association between exposure to these byproducts and incidence of human cancer, and more recently, with adverse reproductive outcomes. This paper evaluates both the toxicological and epidemiological data involving chlorination disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and adverse reproductive outcomes, and makes recommendations for future research. RESULTS AND CO

Heated indoor swimming pools, infants, and the pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a neurogenic hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: In a case-control study a statistically significant association was recorded between the introduction of infants to heated indoor swimming pools and the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In this paper, a neurogenic hypothesis is formulated to explain how toxins produced by chlorine in such pools may act deleteriously on the infant's immature central nervous system, comprising brain and spinal cord, to produce the deformity of AIS. PRESENTATION OF THE HYPOTHESIS: Through vulnerability of the developing central nervous system to circulating toxins, and because of

Impact of storm events on disinfection byproduct precursors in a drinking water source in the Northeastern United States.

Storm events play a crucial role in organic matter transport within watersheds and can increase the concentration and alter the composition of NOMs and DBP formation potential. To assess the impact that storm events can have on drinking water quality, samples were collected and analyzed across four storm events in the Neversink River, Catskill region, New York in 2019 and 2022. Source water natural organic matter (NOM) was characterized, and the change of NOM quality was evaluated due to storm impacts. During storm events, a high level of NOM mobilization is initiated by heavy precipitation ca

Assessment of occupational and public exposure to trichloramine in Swiss indoor swimming pools: a proposal for an occupational exposure limit.

OBJECTIVES: The presence of trichloramine in the air in different indoor swimming pools has been studied in several countries. In almost all studies, the results show a possible health impact due to trichloramine among pool attendants. The main objectives of our study were to evaluate, for the first time in Switzerland, occupational and public trichloramine exposure in a representative panel of indoor pools and to propose an occupational exposure limit for trichloramine. METHODS: Measurements were done in 30 indoor swimming pools located in three regions of Switzerland: Jura, Neuchâtel, and F

Identifying drinking water safety hazards throughout an Arctic community's water supply system.

Arctic communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to ongoing attempts at decolonization and reconciliation with Indigenous groups and the potential for geopolitical conflict in the region. There is also increased attention to the region from various industries because of its economic potential, especially as climate change allows for increased access for development. This increase in attention has highlighted the lack of understanding about drinking water sources and infrastructure in the Arctic. In this study we conducted extensive water quality mon

Nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by inhaled bromodichloromethane in wild-type and p53-heterozygous mice.

Bromodichloromethane (BDCM) is a common municipal drinking water disinfection by-product, resulting in widespread trace human exposure via ingestion and inhalation. The present studies were designed to define organ-specific, BDCM-induced toxicity in wild type (p53(+/+)) and heterozygous (p53(+/-)) mice on both the FVB/N and C57BL/6 genetic backgrounds. Mice were exposed to BDCM vapor daily for 6 h/day and 7 days/week at concentrations of 0, 1, 10, 30, 100, or 150 ppm for 1 week and at 0, 0.3, 1, 3, 10, or 30 ppm for 3 weeks. In the 1-week exposure study, dose-dependent mortality and morbidity

Bottled or tap? Comparison of 64 DBPs, total organic halogen, and calculated toxicity.

Bottled water consumption has increased globally at a tremendous rate, however, little is known about levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in bottled water beyond the regulated trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), and bromate. This is important because many bottled waters are sourced from tap water. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we quantified 64 regulated and priority, unregulated DBPs in 10 popular brands of bottled water, including 50 toxicologically important, unregulated DBPs not measured in previous studies. Several priority, unregulated DBPs were found in b

Changes in cecal microbial metabolism of rats induced by individual and a mixture of drinking water disinfection by-products.

Disinfection of drinking water has been one of the greatest public health successes. Numerous halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) occur and chronic ingestion has been associated with an increased risk for colorectal cancer in human populations. Because the intestinal microbiota can bioactivate xenobiotics, studies have been performed to examine the effects of individual DBPs on intestinal microbial metabolism. No studies have been conducted on a defined mixture of DBPs to determine if there is an enhancement of response to a mixture. Ten-week-old male Long-Evans rats were treated in th
