Computed tomographic analysis of internal structures within the nasal cavities of green, loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles.

The morphology of the tetrapod nasal cavity has adapted to the environment in terms of olfaction and respiration. Reports indicate that the internal structure of the nasal cavity of green sea turtles is more complex than that of turtles in general, but whether or not it is similar among sea turtle species remains unknown. The present study aimed to define the internal structures of the nasal cavity of green (Chelonian mydas), loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles using computed tomography. The nasal cavity of green and loggerhead sea turtles contained

Gastric lesions in free-living sea turtles: An underestimated disease that reflects the health of the ecosystem.

Free-living marine turtles are constantly exposed to aggression factors and the gastrointestinal tract is one of the main gateways of entry. The objective of this study was to identify, and describe the anatomopathological alterations in the stomach of free-living marine turtles found dead on the beaches of the Microrregião dos Lagos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Twenty-two sea turtles were necropsied, and stomach fragments were collected, fixed, and processed routinely. The presence of gastritis, parasitism, and adaptative morphological alteration of the cells were evaluated in a microscopic analy

OSTEODENSITOMETRY AND TOMOGRAPHIC FINDINGS IN FOUR CAPTIVE GIANT SOUTH AMERICAN TURTLES (PODOCNEMIS EXPANSA) WITH METABOLIC BONE DISEASE.

Giant South American turtles (Podocnemis expansa) are at a risk of extinction because of the rapid decline in their population over the last few decades. Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is common in captive testudines, but is often not diagnosed until a later stage. The authors present the cases of four captive giant South American turtles with carapace deformity secondary to MBD that underwent computed tomography (CT) scans of the carapace bones and vertebral column. Findings indicative of changes in geometry were found in both. The cancellous bone pattern was characterized by varying degrees of

Lesions Observed Post Mortem in Post-hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) from a Head Start Programme.

Head start programmes are ex-situ conservation procedures consisting of the captive rearing of sea turtle hatchlings for several months in order to avoid high mortality rates in the first year of life. Studies of the diseases of hatchling and post-hatchling turtles belonging to these programmes are scarce. We describe the gross and histological lesions found in 78 post-hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that died during captive rearing in the conservation programme of the Cape Verde-Canary Islands, initiated with 113 hatchlings. The main organ systems affected were respiratory

In Vitro Replication of Chelonid Herpesvirus 5 in Organotypic Skin Cultures from Hawaiian Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a tumor disease of marine turtles associated with chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5), which has historically been refractory to growth in tissue culture. Here we show, for the first time, de novo formation of ChHV5-positive intranuclear inclusions in cultured green turtle cells, which is indicative of active lytic replication of the virus. The minimal requirements to achieve lytic replication in cultured cells included (i) either in vitro cultures of ChHV5-positive tumor biopsy specimens (plugs) or organotypic cultures (rafts) consisting of ChHV5-positive turtle fibrobl

Clinical and Pathological Findings in Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) from Gladstone, Queensland: Investigations of a Stranding Epidemic.

An investigation into the health of green turtles was undertaken near Gladstone, Queensland, in response to a dramatic increase in stranding numbers in the first half of 2011. A total of 56 live turtles were subject to clinical examination and blood sampling for routine blood profiles, and 12 deceased turtles underwent a thorough necropsy examination. This population of green turtles was found to be in poor body condition and a range of infectious and non-infectious conditions were identified in the unhealthy turtles, including hepato-renal insufficiency (up to 81%, 27/33 based on clinical pat

Seasonal changes of sperm storage and correlative structures in male and female soft-shelled turtles, Trionyx sinensis.

Reproductive ducts of male and female soft-shelled turtles, Trionyx sinensis were examined throughout the year (March, May, September, December) using brightfield and electron microscopes (TEM and SEM), to determine the location and histomorphological characteristics of sperm storage structures as well as their changes at different phases of the seasonal reproductive cycle. Sperm stored in the epididymis were also examined. In the male, spermatogenesis is initiated in spring (May), and then the mature sperm are released in autumn as an episodic event. Spermatogenesis is inactive in winter. How

Wetness of the nest environment influences cardiac development in pre- and post-natal snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina).

We dissected hearts from near-term embryos and hatchlings of common snapping turtles (Chelydridae: Chelydra serpentina) whose eggs had incubated on wet or dry substrates, and then dried and individually weighed the heart and yolk-free carcass from each animal. Hearts and carcasses of prenatal and neonatal animals grew at different rates, and the patterns of growth by both heart and carcass differed between wet and dry environments. Hearts grew faster, both in actual mass and in mass adjusted for variation in body size, in embryos and hatchlings whose eggs were incubated on dry substrates than

Detection and genomic characterization of Salmonella Infantis and Klebsiella serotypes in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), Italy.

This study describes the detection and genomic characterization of Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis ST32 and previously unreported Klebsiella serotypes isolated from stranded Caretta caretta along the Italian Adriatic coast. Cloacal and fecal samples collected during rescue and rehabilitation activities yielded multiple isolates identified through MALDI-TOF MS and subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing. Salmonella Infantis isolates displayed a uniform ST32 profile and were recovered from a turtle at admission and from remaining positive animals prior

Classifying behaviors from animal-borne cameras using machine learning: automated identification of breathing events in sea turtles.

Animal-borne cameras are increasingly used to study animal behavior. Here, we assessed the utility of three machine-learning models - Resnet-50 (3 epochs), Resnet-50 (10 epochs) and Vision Transformer (ViT) (3 epochs) - for identifying breathing behavior from animal-borne camera footage from green turtles (Chelonia mydas). The ViT model had mean Accuracy (97.2%), Precision (63.3%) and F1 (72.7%) scores that outperformed the Resnet-50 models, while all models had a Recall of >99.9%. Thus, the ViT model correctly identified almost all breathing frames although false positives (apnea frames label

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) embryos: Occurrence, tissue distribution and associated biological responses.

Maternal transfer of environmental contaminants represents a critical pathway that occurs during the early life stages of marine vertebrates, however, the occurrence and the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sea turtle embryos remain poorly characterized. This study investigated environmental PAH burdens and tissue distribution in loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) embryos collected from nesting sites along the anthropogenically impacted Ionian coast (Mediterranean Sea). Chemical analyses of yolk and liver tissues were integrated with histological, molecular, and protein endp

Biology, Nesting Behavior, Genetic Diversity, and Conservation of Leatherback Sea Turtles: Insights From Thailand and Global Perspectives.

Sea turtles are large reptiles that inhabit the world's oceans and include seven extant species within two families: Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. These species are threatened globally, with several subpopulations listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Thailand hosts five sea turtle species, including leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea ), which are significant for their nesting sites along the Andaman Sea coast. Conservation efforts in Thailand include beach patrols, hatcheries, and community education to mitigate threats such as poaching and habitat destruction. L

Importation of the exotic tick Amblyomma geoemydae into Sweden via illegally introduced turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) from Thailand.

Illegal importation of animals as pets might be followed by the introduction of exotic tick species, potential vectors of pathogens that can have an impact on wildlife and/or domestic animals and on humans. Therefore, permanent measures of surveillance and control on imported reptiles are emphasized. In February 2024, black-breasted leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) (n = 31) were illegally imported into Sweden from Thailand. The turtles were sent by the Swedish Customs Criminal Department West in Gothenburg to a public aquarium and terrarium (Tropicarium, Kolmården, Östergötland county) to be

45S rDNA Repeats of Turtles and Crocodiles Harbor a Functional 5S rRNA Gene Specifically Expressed in Oocytes.

In most eukaryotic genomes, tandemly repeated copies of 5S rRNA genes are clustered outside the nucleolus organizer region (NOR), which normally encodes three other major rRNAs: 18S, 5.8S, and 28S. Our analysis of turtle rDNA sequences has revealed a 5S rDNA insertion into the NOR intergenic spacer in antisense orientation. The insertion (hereafter called NOR-5S rRNA gene) has a length of 119 bp and coexists with the canonical 5S rDNA clusters outside the NOR. Despite the ∼20% nucleotide difference between the two 5S gene sequences, their internal control regions for RNA polymerase III are sim

Oxidative Damage? Not a Problem! The Characterization of Humanin-like Mitochondrial Peptide in Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtles.

Mitochondria was long thought to be an "end function" organelle that regulated the metabolic flux and apoptosis in the cell. However, with the discovery of the mitochondrial peptide (MDP) humanin (HN/MTRNR2), the cytoprotective and pro-survival applications of MDPs have taken the forefront of therapeutic and diagnostic research. However, the regulation of humanin-like MDPs in natural model systems that can tolerate lethal environmental and cytotoxic insults remains to be investigated. Red-eared sliders are champion anaerobes that can withstand three continuous months of anoxia followed by rapi

Main airway throughout the nasal cavity of green sea turtles is lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.

Structural and histological features of the nasal cavity of sea turtles are largely different from those of other Testudines species. The sea turtle nasal cavity is a pair of tubular structures with three diverticula and an excavation in the center, and three types of sensory epithelium are present in these four significant structures. To more clarify the adaptation of the nasal cavity to marine life style in sea turtles, non-sensory epithelium in the nasal cavity of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) were histologically determined from nostril to choanae in this study.
