From January 1971 through december 1978, 71 patients with a squamous-cell carcinoma of the uvula and the soft palate have been seen at the Fondation Bergonié : 56 have been treated and followed. The primary tumor is often controlled by external radiation-therapy and/or interstitial therapy among the 12 failure observed, 5 were salvaged by a surgical procedure. The systematic irradiation of cervical lymph nodes areas allowed 94% of control, above the clavicles. However these good results in the loco-regional control are altered by a high rate of second primary and intercurrent death.

Bronchoscopy can cause post-procedural throat discomfort due to oropharyngeal irritation. We report a rare complication of bronchoscopy that resulted in similar symptoms. A 30-year-old man complained of severe throat discomfort a day after bronchoscopy. Examination revealed a swollen, elongated uvula. Within the cerebellum several structures are considered to modulate the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). The nodulus and uvula have been implicated with the low-frequency components of the VOR, which are mediated by the velocity storage system. We report a patient with a selective lesion of the nodulus and ventral uvula. The findings suggest that nodulus and uvula normally exert an inhibitory effect on the velocity storage mechanism.

The vestibular primary afferent projection to the cerebellum of the rabbit was studied with retrograde and orthograde tracers. We injected individual lobules of the cerebellum with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinin-HRP (WGA-HRP). UNLABELLED: Uvular necrosis is an uncommon but startling complication of manipulation of the posterior oropharynx, either via instrumentation or direct suctioning. Here, we present a patient who developed uvular necrosis after an urgent intubation. Although the uvular necrosis self-resolved via the auto-amputation of the uvula, the change to the uvula was emotionally distressing to the patient. As symptoms typically develop one to two days after the initial injury to the uvula, this diagnosis may be seen in the emergency department, rather than in the inpatient hospital setting.
