Reversible Nyctalopia and Bilateral Optic Neuropathy due to Combined Vitamin A, Zinc, and Copper Deficiency: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Combined nutritional deficiency is an uncommon cause of vision loss in the USA. Notably, vitamin A deficiency can produce nyctalopia but rarely causes bilateral central vision loss. The combination of these symptoms is unusual, although likely underreported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an exceptionally rare case of bilateral central vision loss and nyctalopia caused by combined vitamin A, zinc, and copper deficiency, likely following bariatric surgery and alcohol use. Following mineral and vitamin supplementation, the patient's vision improved significantly and returned to base

The potential cost-effectiveness of amblyopia screening programs.

PURPOSE: To estimate the incremental cost-effective-ness of amblyopia screening at preschool and kindergarten, the costs and benefits of three amblyopia screening scenarios were compared to no screening and to each other: (1) acuity/stereopsis (A/S) screening at kindergarten, (2) A/S screening at preschool and kindergarten, and (3) photoscreening at preschool and A/S screening at kindergarten. METHODS: A probabilistic microsimulation model of amblyopia natural history and response to treatment with screening costs and outcomes estimated from two state programs was programmed. The probability

Comparison of Worth Four Dots (W4D) and Bagolini Striated Lenses in adult suppression detection.

BACKGROUND: Suppression is an adaptive response in which visual information from one eye is inhibited to prevent visual conflict. This phenomenon is commonly observed in individuals with strabismus, anisometropia, or amblyopia. Clinically detecting suppression is essential for assessing binocular vision and conducting visual training. The Worth Four Dots (W4D) and Bagolini Striated Lenses (BAG) are widely used tools. However, empirical comparisons of their screening performance in large-scale clinical settings remain limited. METHODS: This single-center, prospective, cross-sectional study recr

Care provision for poststroke visual impairment.

BACKGROUND: We sought to explore the care provision for poststroke visual impairment and variations in this in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Survey questions were developed and piloted with clinicians, academics, and users. Questions addressed types of visual problems; how these were identified, treated, and followed up; care pathways in use; links with other professions; and referral options. The survey was accessed via a Weblink, which was circulated through UK professional organizations to multiprofessional members of ophthalmic and stroke teams. RESULTS: A total of 548 completed electroni

The role of cadre in the community on diabetic retinopathy management and its challenges in low-middle income countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is a serious public health problem, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing over 80% of the burden. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most prevalent diabetic microvascular problems, and early diagnosis through eye screening programs for people with diabetes is critical to prevent vision impairment and blindness. Community-based treatments, including non-physician cadres have been recommended to enhance DR care. METHODS: The review protocol was determined and scoping review was conducted. The population, concept, and context were "cadre", "role of cadr

[A new photographic method for measuring squint angles in infants and small children].

A new photographic method for measuring squint angles in children and infants is presented. A photographic picture is taken from the subject, using a camera with the three flashes bulle. One flashbulle is placed vertically over the lens, two other flashbulles are placed symmetrically in an angle of 10 degrees beside the middle flash. Six reflections can be seen on the photographic picture in each pupil. (1. and 4. Purkinje Sanson Images of each light source.) The horizontal distance of two reflections is determined by the distance of the flashguns. If the reflection lines in both eyes are symm

Visual screening in an orthogeriatric rehabilitation setting: a feasibility evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vision loss is a significant risk factor for falls. Given the associated morbidity and mortality, proactive risk-reduction strategies are warranted. This evaluation aimed to assess the feasibility and potential clinical value of bedside visual screening in an orthogeriatric rehabilitation setting and to estimate the proportion of previously unrecognized visual deficits among older inpatients admitted following a fall. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this prospective, single-center feasibility evaluation, 21 patients aged ≥65 years admitted post-falls were assessed.

Hybrid Computer Vision Model to Predict Lung Cancer in Diverse Populations.

PURPOSE: Disparities in lung cancer incidence exist in Black populations, and screening criteria underserve Black populations due to disparately elevated risk in the screening-eligible population. Prediction models that integrate clinical and imaging-based features to individualize lung cancer risk are a potential means to mitigate these disparities. METHODS: This multicenter (National Lung Screening Trial [NLST]) and catchment population-based (University of Illinois Health [UIH], urban and suburban Cook County) cross-sectional study used participants at risk of lung cancer with available lu

Artificial intelligence for improving sickle cell retinopathy diagnosis and management.

Sickle cell retinopathy is often initially asymptomatic even in proliferative stages, but can progress to cause vision loss due to vitreous haemorrhages or tractional retinal detachments. Challenges with access and adherence to screening dilated fundus examinations, particularly in medically underserved areas where the burden of sickle cell disease is highest, highlight the need for novel approaches to screening for patients with vision-threatening sickle cell retinopathy. This article reviews the existing literature on and suggests future research directions for coupling artificial intelligen
