Magnesium deficiency differentially affects the retina and visual cortex of intact rats.

To determine the influence of magnesium (Mg) on the visual system, electroretinograms (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded under dark-(DA) and light-adapted (LA) conditions in intact rats. Weanling rats were fed either a Mg-deficient (Mg-D) or a control diet for 17 d before the tests, and ERG, VEP and immunohistopathological analyses of retinae and cortices were made. In the Mg-D rats, ear congestion, hair loss and loss of body weight were observed, and serum Mg concentration was approximately 25% of that in the control rats (P < 0.01). The amplitudes of the DA a-wave and the

Geometric visual hallucinations, Euclidean symmetry and the functional architecture of striate cortex.

This paper is concerned with a striking visual experience: that of seeing geometric visual hallucinations. Hallucinatory images were classified by Klüver into four groups called form constants comprising (i) gratings, lattices, fretworks, filigrees, honeycombs and chequer-boards, (ii) cobwebs, (iii) tunnels, funnels, alleys, cones and vessels, and (iv) spirals. This paper describes a mathematical investigation of their origin based on the assumption that the patterns of connection between retina and striate cortex (henceforth referred to as V1)-the retinocortical map-and of neuronal circuits i

Electrical cortical stimulation of the human prefrontal cortex evokes complex visual hallucinations.

Complex visual hallucinations are a well-known feature of electrical stimulation or epileptic discharge in the temporal lobe. It has been proposed that these visual hallucinations result from an electrical interference with the ventral visual processing stream in the lateral temporal lobe and the memory system in medial temporal structures, which explains their frequent visual and mnestic features. Even though recent studies have demonstrated visual and memory functions in the prefrontal cortex, up to now epileptic discharge or electrical stimulation of prefrontal structures has only rarely be

Abnormal causal connectivity of anterior cingulate cortex-visual cortex circuit related to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug efficacy in migraine.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and visual cortex are integral components of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine, yet the impact of altered connectivity patterns between these regions on migraine treatment remains unknown. To elucidate this issue, we investigated the abnormal causal connectivity between the ACC and visual cortex in patients with migraine without aura (MwoA), based on the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, and its predictive ability for the efficacy of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The results revealed increased caus

Hypoactive Visual Cortex, Prefrontal Cortex and Insula during Self-Face Recognition in Adults with First-Episode Major Depressive Disorder.

Self-face recognition is a vital aspect of self-referential processing, which is closely related to affective states. However, neuroimaging research on self-face recognition in adults with major depressive disorder is lacking. This study aims to investigate the alteration of brain activation during self-face recognition in adults with first-episode major depressive disorder (FEMDD) via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); FEMDD (n = 59) and healthy controls (HC, n = 36) who performed a self-face-recognition task during the fMRI scan. The differences in brain activation signal values b

Motor and vestibular signals in the visual cortex permit the separation of self versus externally generated visual motion.

Knowing whether we are moving or something in the world is moving around us is possibly the most critical sensory discrimination we need to perform. How the brain and, in particular, the visual system solves this motion-source separation problem is not known. Here, we find that motor, vestibular, and visual motion signals are used by the mouse primary visual cortex (VISp) to differentially represent the same visual flow information according to whether the head is stationary or experiencing passive versus active translation. During locomotion, we find that running suppresses running-congruent

Cross-modal activation of the primary visual cortex by auditory stimulation in RCS rats: considerations in visual prosthesis.

An important brain re-wiring, the so-called cross-modal plasticity, occurs during progression of retinal degenerative diseases to compensate for lack of visual input. The visual cortex does not go 'unused', instead it is devoted to processing other sensory modalities. In this study we recorded, in the visual cortex, visual- and auditory-evoked potentials in an anesthetized murine model of retinal degeneration. The latency to the first peak of the recorded local field potentials was used to assess the speed of the response. Visual responses occurred significantly faster in the control group. Co

Functional difference between the ventral visual cortex and the intraparietal sulcus in visual working memory of material properties.

A recent study showed that objects' roughness (smooth or rough) was held in visual working memory (VWM) in the ventral visual cortex and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Here, we investigated the functional differences between these areas in the context of VWM of material properties. We focused on the process in which participants accurately extracted and maintained in their memories the glossiness and roughness of a sphere. Human participants performed two types of delayed material (glossiness or roughness) discrimination tasks in which they judged which task was to be performed based on the d

Adaptation of visual cortex to damage of visual pathways in suprasellar tumors before and after gamma knife radiosurgery.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate that lesions of the visual pathways due to suprasellar tumors are accompanied by alterations of the visual cortex and to see if these alterations are reversible after treatment of tumors by gamma knife radiosurgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 36 patients with peri-optic tumors and defects of their visual fields and in an age-matched control group, magnetic resonance imaging was performed before and after treatment. T1 weighted images were evaluated by voxel-based morphometry and correlated to the degree of visual field defects. RESULTS: In patients, grey matter density

Population receptive field analysis of the primary visual cortex complements perimetry in patients with homonymous visual field defects.

Injury to the primary visual cortex (V1) typically leads to loss of conscious vision in the corresponding, homonymous region of the contralateral visual hemifield (scotoma). Several studies suggest that V1 is highly plastic after injury to the visual pathways, whereas others have called this conclusion into question. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure area V1 population receptive field (pRF) properties in five patients with partial or complete quadrantic visual field loss as a result of partial V1+ or optic radiation lesions. Comparisons were made with healthy cont

[Correlation of infarctions of the visual cortex with homonymous visual field defects. A computer tomographic study (author's transl)].

Computed tomography (CT) is a simple and non-invasive method of demonstrating infarctions of the visual cortex. Seventy-eight CT-proven infarctions were correlated with the visual field defects. This correlation between cortical infarctions and visual field defects is difficult to achieve by angiography because of the variations in the vascular supply. CT, on the other hand, provides a far better correlation, showing the functional-anatomical structure of the visual cortex by projection in three planes (transverse, sagittal, coronar). CT, however, can not replace angiography in cases where art

Modelling thalamocortical circuitry shows that visually induced LTP changes laminar connectivity in human visual cortex.

Neuroplasticity is essential to learning and memory in the brain; it has therefore also been implicated in numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders, making measuring the state of neuroplasticity of foremost importance to clinical neuroscience. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a key mechanism of neuroplasticity and has been studied extensively, and invasively in non-human animals. Translation to human application largely relies on the validation of non-invasive measures of LTP. The current study presents a generative thalamocortical computational model of visual cortex for investigating a

Functional recomposition of excitatory synaptic inputs to individual neurons in ferret visual cortex after the onset of visual experience.

During early visual cortex development, the onset of visual experience initiates a period of rapid dendritic growth and excitatory synapse formation that coincides with the functional maturation of visually driven neuronal response properties. How this surge in the number of excitatory synaptic inputs refines the initial functional network structure to generate coherent, yet adaptable, single-neuron responses remains unclear. To address this issue, we examined the functional properties and spatial organization of individual dendritic spines of layer 2/3 neurons in ferret visual cortex before a

Corticotropin releasing factor neurons in the visual cortex mediate long-term changes in visual function induced by early adversity.

Early adversity can cause malfunction of the visual system in adulthood. Adult female but not male mice undergoing early chronic mild stress (ECMS) maintain ocular dominance (OD) plasticity after the critical period. How early stressful experiences have a long-term impact on it is largely unknown. Here, we observed a wide distribution of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-positive neurons, which mainly colocalized with a subpopulation of GABAergic interneurons in the mouse primary visual cortex (V1). Optogenetic activation of CRF-positive neurons transfected with AAV-ChR2 evoked inhibitory c

Visual cortex changes in children with sickle cell disease and normal visual acuity: a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging study.

The visual system is primarily affected in sickle cell disease (SCD), and eye examination is recommended starting in late childhood. So far, to our knowledge, all studies have focused on the retina, neglecting the changes that might be present in the cortical portion of the visual system. We performed a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation of the visual cortex in 25 children with SCD (mean age: 12·3 ± 1·9 years) and 31 controls (mean age: 12·7 ± 1·6 years). At ophthalmologic examination, 3/25 SCD children had mild visual acuity deficits and 2/25 had mild tortuosity of the ret

Realignment of representational drift in mouse visual cortex via flexible electrode arrays.

The ability to stably decode brain activity is crucial for brain-computer interfaces, which are often compromised by recording instability due to immune responses and probe drifting. In addition, many brain regions undergo intrinsic dynamics such as 'representational drift', in which neural activities associated with stable sensation and action continually change over time. Here we demonstrate that tissue-like flexible electrode arrays enable stable, months-long tracking of the same neurons in the mouse visual cortex and hippocampus during visual stimulation. Using these arrays, we recorded si

Deep learning-based control of electrically evoked activity in human visual cortex.

Visual cortical prostheses offer a promising path to sight restoration, but current systems elicit crude, variable percepts and rely on manual electrode-by-electrode calibration that does not scale. These limitations reflect a deeper challenge: electrical microstimulation evokes nonlinear, state-dependent population responses in the human visual cortex, complicating the link between stimulation and perception. Here, we present a deep learning framework that leverages a bidirectional cortical implant to causally shape stimulation-evoked population activity in the human visual cortex. The framew

Contrastive learning to fine-tune feature extraction models for the visual cortex.

Predicting the neural response to natural images in the visual cortex requires extracting relevant features from the images and relating those feature to the observed responses. In this work, we optimize the feature extraction in order to maximize the information shared between the image features and the neural response across voxels in a given region of interest (ROI) extracted from the BOLD signal measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We adapt contrastive learning (CL) to fine-tune a convolutional neural network, which was pretrained for image classification, such that a

Precise Functional Localization of the Foveolar Representation in Anesthetized Macaque Visual Cortex.

The foveola-the central ∼1° of the visual field-supports the highest-acuity spatial vision, yet localizing its cortical representation is technically demanding, particularly under anesthesia where gaze cannot be behaviorally controlled. Here we describe a hierarchical, meridian-based 7T BOLD fMRI strategy for sub-degree localization of the foveolar representation in anesthetized macaques. Drifting grating bars presented at three successively finer scales (4.5°, 1.5°, 0.5°) independently refined the vertical and horizontal meridian representations, each identified by a characteristic activation

Premature vision drives aberrant development of response properties in primary visual cortex.

Development of the mammalian visual system is thought to proceed in two stages. In the first stage, before birth in primates and before eye opening in altricial mammals, spontaneous activity generated by the retina and cortex shapes visual brain circuits in an activity-dependent but experience-independent manner. In the second stage, visual activity generated by sensory experience refines receptive fields. Here we investigated the consequences of altering this sequence of events by prematurely opening one or both eyes of ferrets and examining visual receptive fields in monocular cortex after t
