Differential glymphatic dysfunction and memory correlation in temporal lobe epilepsy subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the glymphatic system (GS) in different temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) subtypes using diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) and to explore its correlation with clinical factors and memory performance. METHODS: The study encompassed 112 TLE patients with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS), 73 TLE patients with no lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (TLE-NL), and 55 healthy controls. The DTI-ALPS index was calculated based on 3.0T diffusion tensor image sequences, and the memory performance was assessed using the Wechsler Me

Assessment of memory lateralization by posterior cerebral artery selective anesthesia and postoperative verbal memory decline.

OBJECTIVE: The Wada test, an intracarotid amobarbital procedure, is the gold standard for preoperative evaluation of postoperative memory decline in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, it has certain limitations including false negatives due to insufficient hippocampal inhibition and false positives due to extrahippocampal disorders such as aphasia. This study examined the utility of posterior cerebral artery (PCA) selective anesthesia for functional evaluation (SAFE) as an alternative approach to avoid aphasia and assessed its predictive value for postoperative verbal memory decli

The discrepancy between verbal and visuoperceptual IQ in children with a specific learning disorder: An analysis of 1624 cases.

Children with a specific learning disorder (SLD) are often characterized by marked intellectual strengths and weaknesses. In the last few years, research has focused on a common discrepancy between low working memory and processing speed on the one hand, and high verbal and visuoperceptual intelligence on the other. SLD profiles featuring a specific discrepancy between verbal and visuoperceptual abilities have been only marginally considered, however, and their systematic comparison vis-à-vis typically-developing (TD) populations has yet to be conducted. The present study examined a dataset of

Electrophysiological correlates of semantic processing in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder due to microdeletion in chromosome 7, has been described as a syndrome with an intriguing socio-cognitive phenotype. Cognitively, the relative preservation of language and face processing abilities coexists with severe deficits in visual-spatial tasks, as well as in tasks involving abstract reasoning. However, in spite of early claims of the independence of language from general cognition in WS, a detailed investigation of language subcomponents has demonstrated several abnormalities in lexical-semantic processing. Nonetheless, the

Overgeneral autobiographical memory and depressive disorder in children.

Overgeneral autobiographical memory seems to be a stable cognitive marker in depressed adults and may predict persistence of depression. This study investigated whether depressive disorders in children are associated with overgeneral memory. Sixty children (ages 9 to 13 years) participated; 15 were diagnosed with lifetime depressive disorder, 25 had other lifetime psychiatric disorders, and 20 had no history of psychiatric disorder. Depressed children gave fewer specific memories compared to children with no or other psychiatric disorders, even after controlling for depressive mood, potential

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood: a study of neuropsychological functioning.

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare chronic neurological disorder characterized by alternating transient attacks of hemiplegia. Evidence from recent studies suggests the disorder is characterized by tonic fits, dystonic posturing, and ocular motor abnormalities. Although widely observed, deficits in cognitive functioning are among one of the least described features of AHC. Most studies describe global deficits, however, no study has provided a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment of a child with AHC. This study presents neuropsychological findings from a comprehensive a

Cognitive impairment in asymptomatic cerebral arterial stenosis: a P300 study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral arterial stenosis (CAS), in the absence of a structural lesion, can result in cognitive impairment that represents an ongoing contention among studies. Accordingly, we investigated cognitive functions in asymptomatic patients with CAS, using P300 which is a neurophysiological tool. We also compared cognition in intracranial stenosis (ICS) and extracranial stenosis (ECS). METHODS: Asymptomatic patients with CAS (≥ 70%) in the absence of structural brain lesions were categorized into ICS and ECS groups of 15 patients each, in addition to 15 normal controls. MRI, MRA, CT ang

Verbal and visuospatial working memory during pregnancy: EEG correlation between the prefrontal and parietal cortices.

Pregnancy is a dynamic process during which significant cognitive changes take place. It has been suggested that working memory (WM) is affected during gestation as a result of functional changes among cortical areas, such as the prefrontal and parietal cortices. This study examined cortical electroencephalographic correlations (rEEG) during performance of WM tasks in each trimester of pregnancy. Forty women were divided into 4 groups: first (T1), second (T2), and third (T3) trimester of pregnancy, and a control group of non-pregnant women. Electroencephalographic activity (EEG) was recorded f

Neuropsychological function in relation to serum parathyroid hormone and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The Tromsø study.

There are receptors for parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the brain, and there are clinical and experimental data indicating that PTH and vitamin D may affect cerebral function. In the present study 21 subjects who both in the 5th Tromsø study and at a follow-up examination fulfilled criteria for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) without renal failure (serum calcium < 2.40 mmol/L, serum PTH > 6.4 pmol/L, and normal serum creatinine) and 63 control subjects were compared with tests for cognitive and emotional function. Those in the SHPT group had significantly impaired

Experimental dyspnoea interferes with locomotion and cognition: a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases are associated with cognitive dysfunction, but whether dyspnoea by itself negatively impacts on cognition has not been demonstrated. Cortical networks engaged in subjects experiencing dyspnoea are also activated during other tasks that require cognitive input and this may provoke a negative impact through interference with each other. METHODS: This randomised, crossover trial investigated whether experimentally-induced dyspnoea would negatively impact on locomotion and cognitive function among 40 healthy adults. Crossover conditions were unloaded breat

Parieto-frontal gyrification and working memory in healthy adults.

Gyrification of the cortical mantle is a dynamic process that increases with cortical surface area and decreases with age. Increased gyrification is associated with higher scores on cognitive tasks in adults; however, the degree to which this relationship is independent of cortical surface area remains undefined. This study investigates whether regional variation in gyrification is associated with domain-general and domain-specific cognition. Our hypothesis is that increased local gyrification confers a functional advantage that is independent of surface area. To quantify regional gyrification

The effectiveness of computerized cognitive training on the attention and working memory of children with frontal lobe epilepsy: A single-case study.

Children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) are at elevated risk for deficits in working memory (WM) and attention that contribute to academic and psychosocial difficulties. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) programs such as Cogmed show promise in pediatric populations, but their effects in FLE remain largely unexplored. This single-case experimental study evaluated the impact of CCT on WM and attention in three children (ages 9-11) with FLE. A non-concurrent multiple-baseline design across participants was used, with staggered intervention onset to control for practice and maturational effe

Impact of co-morbid attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder on cognitive function in male children with Tourette syndrome: A controlled study.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are co-morbid neurodevelopmental conditions affecting more commonly male patients. We set out to determine the impact of co-morbid ADHD on cognitive function in male children with TS by conducting a controlled study. Participants included four matched groups of unmedicated children (age range 6-15 years): TS (n=13), TS+ADHD (n=8), ADHD (n=39), healthy controls (n=66). Following clinical assessment, each participant completed a battery of tests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III, the Italian Batter
