Pharmacists' knowledge of the safety of antibiotics for systemic use.

BACKGROUND: Patients decide to take antibiotics themselves in 21% of cases of acute respiratory viral infections, influenza and acute respiratory infections [1]. The main factor of drug purchase at a pharmacy is pharmacist's recommendation. In 14% of cases of purchase of antibiotics, patients describe the symptoms and do not name a specific drug. This provides opportunity for drug selection at a pharmacy [2]. In these circumstances the role of pharmacists in ensuring the rational use of antimicrobial agents increases significantly. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the knowledge of pharmacists about ant

Tuberculosis drugs' distribution and emergence of resistance in patient's lung lesions: A mechanistic model and tool for regimen and dose optimization.

BACKGROUND: The sites of mycobacterial infection in the lungs of tuberculosis (TB) patients have complex structures and poor vascularization, which obstructs drug distribution to these hard-to-reach and hard-to-treat disease sites, further leading to suboptimal drug concentrations, resulting in compromised TB treatment response and resistance development. Quantifying lesion-specific drug uptake and pharmacokinetics (PKs) in TB patients is necessary to optimize treatment regimens at all infection sites, to identify patients at risk, to improve existing regimens, and to advance development of no

Ornamental birds: hidden carriers of potentially virulent and antimicrobial-resistant Enterococcus faecalis in Bangladesh.

Enterococcus faecalis, a nosocomial pathogen adept at acquiring virulence and resistance genes, may be silently carried by ornamental birds in proximity to humans, posing a health risk. Two hundred ornamental bird samples (feces = 120, cage feed = 60, and store feed = 20) were collected and processed to detect E. faecalis isolates and determine their biofilm-forming capabilities, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance profiles. In PCR, 44 (22%) samples were found positive for E. faecalis, with the highest occurrence in cage feed samples (18/60), followed by feces (25/120) and stored feed (1/2

Antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes in a one-year city metabolism longitudinal study using wastewater-based epidemiology.

This longitudinal study tests correlations between antimicrobial agents (AA) and corresponding antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) generated by a community of >100 k people inhabiting one city (Bath) over a 13 month randomised monitoring programme of community wastewater. Several AAs experienced seasonal fluctuations, such as the macrolides erythromycin and clarithromycin that were found in higher loads in winter, whilst other AA levels, including sulfamethoxazole and sulfapyridine, stayed consistent over the study period. Interestingly, and as opposed to AAs, ARGs prevalence was found to be
