Neurobiological commonalities and distinctions among 3 major psychiatric disorders: a graph theoretical analysis of the structural connectome.

BACKGROUND: White matter network alterations have increasingly been implicated in major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to identify shared and distinct white matter network alterations among the 3 disorders. METHODS: We used analysis of covariance, with age and gender as covariates, to investigate white matter network alterations in 123 patients with schizophrenia, 123 with bipolar disorder, 124 with major depressive disorder and 209 healthy controls. RESULTS: We found significant group differences in global network efficiency (F = 3.386, p

Investigation of Motor Cortical Plasticity and Corticospinal Tract Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Patients with Parkinsons Disease and Essential Tremor.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are characterized with motor dysfunctions. Motor circuit dysfunctions can be complementarily investigated by paired associative stimulation (PAS)-induced long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the corticospinal tract (CST). Three groups of twelve subjects with moderate severity PD, ET with intention tremor and healthy controls (HC) were studied. The primary motor cortex (M1) excitability, measured by motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude and by short-interval and long-interval intracortical inhibiti

Somatosensory shift of postural control in dizzy patients.

CONCLUSIONS: Postural control is dependent on the visual system in normal conditions. Shift from visual to somatosensory dependence in dizzy patients suggests that utilizing the stable visual references is recommended for the rehabilitation of dizzy patients. OBJECTIVES: To investigate which of the visual or somatosensory system is mainly used for substitution of the impaired spatial orientation in dizzy patients. METHODS: We recruited 189 consecutive patients with or without dizziness and vestibular dysfunction. Dizzy patients were divided into three groups: acute, episodic, and chronic diz

Neurophysiological Monitoring During Arteriovenous Malformation Embolization.

BACKGROUND: Neurophysiological monitoring (NPM) is frequently performed during arteriovenous malformation (AVM) embolization. However, the ability of NPM to predict neurological deficits or improve surgical decision making in this setting has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To review our use of NPM during AVM embolization to better define its utility. METHODS: We retrospectively examined AVM embolization cases from 2004 to 2017. We recorded patient and AVM characteristics as well as outcomes. We then reviewed NPM results from each case, including somatosensory evoked potentials and electroencep

On the Typical Development of the Central Sulcus in Infancy: A Longitudinal Evaluation of Its Morphology and Link to Behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: The progressive folding of the cortex is an important feature of neurodevelopment starting around the 14th week of gestation. The central sulcus (CS) is one of the first to fold. Since it represents the anatomical boundary between primary somatosensory and motor functional regions, its developing morphology may inform on the acquisition of sensorimotor skills. We aimed to identify potential asynchronous morphological changes along the CS during infancy, with the hypothesis that this may reflect the differential onset in the emergence of motor milestones across body parts. METHOD

Ovariectomy-induced hormone deprivation aggravates Aβ1-42 deposition in the basolateral amygdala and cholinergic fiber loss in the cortex but not cognitive behavioral symptoms in a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, being highly prevalent in elderly women. The advanced progression may be due to decreased hormone synthesis during post-menopause as estradiol and progesterone both have neuroprotective potentials. We aimed to confirm that female hormone depletion aggravates the progression of dementia in a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (3xTg-AD). As pathological hallmarks are known to appear in 6-month-old animals, we expected to see disease-like changes in the 4-month-old 3xTg-AD mice only after hormone depletion. Three-month-old

Bilateral Representation of Sensorimotor Responses in Benign Adult Familial Myoclonus Epilepsy: An MEG Study.

Patients with cortical reflex myoclonus manifest typical neurophysiologic characteristics due to primary sensorimotor cortex (S1/M1) hyperexcitability, namely, contralateral giant somatosensory-evoked potentials/fields and a C-reflex (CR) in the stimulated arm. Some patients show a CR in both arms in response to unilateral stimulation, with about 10-ms delay in the non-stimulated compared with the stimulated arm. This bilateral C-reflex (BCR) may reflect strong involvement of bilateral S1/M1. However, the significance and exact pathophysiology of BCR within 50 ms are yet to be established beca

Evaluation of central motor conduction in hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients.

Deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones is associated with central nervous system (CNS) disturbances. Although the CNS involvement either in hypothyroidism or in hyperthyroidism have previously been shown on the basis of visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials studies, less is known about the function of central motor pathways in both disorders. We studied the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) following the magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex and spinal roots in 20 patients with hypothyroidism and in 19 patients with hyperthyroidism both before treatment and after they became e

Comprehensive Analysis of the Spatial Distribution of Gadolinium, Iron, Manganese, and Phosphorus in the Brain of Healthy Rats After High-Dose Administrations of Gadodiamide and Gadobutrol.

OBJECTIVES: After the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), residual gadolinium (Gd) has been detected in a few distinct morphological structures of the central nervous system (CNS). However, a systematic, comprehensive, and quantitative analysis of the spatial Gd distribution in the entire brain is not yet available. The first aim of this study is to provide this analysis in healthy rats after administration of high GBCA doses. The second aim is to assess the spatial distributions and possible Gd colocalizations of endogenous iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and phosphorus (P)

What lies beneath the surface of the itch in adults?

Pruritus is synonymous with itching. Many medical conditions are complicated by chronic pruritus compromising the patient's quality of life. The majority of pruritic stimuli are transmitted through C fibers into the lateral spinothalamic tract and then into the somatic sensory cortex where the itching is detected. Histamine, substance P, and tumor necrosis factor a play significant roles in the perception of pruritus. Medical conditions in adults with significant pruritus will be defined in this review.

The value of bilateral ipsilateral and contralateral motor evoked potential monitoring in scoliosis surgery.

Intraoperative monitoring (IOM) of the motor pathways is a routine procedure for ensuring integrity of corticospinal tracts during scoliosis surgery. We have previously demonstrated presence of ipsilateral motor evoked potentials (MEPs) during IOM for scoliosis surgery, but its significance was uncertain. In this case series, we show concurrent ipsilateral and contralateral MEP amplitude changes obtained with cortical stimulation are of value in reducing false positive observations during IOM. The use of this easily recordable MEP is thus advocated as a diagnostic adjunct to contralateral MEPs

"Hyperglutamatergic cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit" breaker drugs alleviate tics in a transgenic circuit model of Tourette׳s syndrome.

The brain circuits underlying tics in Tourette׳s syndrome (TS) are unknown but thought to involve cortico/amygdalo-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) loop hyperactivity. We previously engineered a transgenic mouse "circuit model" of TS by expressing an artificial neuropotentiating transgene (encoding the cAMP-elevating, intracellular A1 subunit of cholera toxin) within a small population of dopamine D1 receptor-expressing somatosensory cortical and limbic neurons that hyperactivate cortico/amygdalostriatal glutamatergic output circuits thought to be hyperactive in TS and comorbid obsessive-compul

A cross-sectional and longitudinal structural magnetic resonance imaging study of the post-central gyrus in first-episode schizophrenia patients.

The post-central gyrus (PoCG) has received little attention in brain imaging literature. However, some magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have detected the presence of PoCG abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. Fifty-six first-episode schizophrenia patients, selected through the program of first-episode psychosis (PAFIP) and carefully assessed for dimensional psychopathology and cognitive functioning, and 56 matched healthy controls were scanned twice over 1-year follow-up. PoCG gray matter volumes were measured at both time-points and compared between the groups. Differences in

Cortical and brainstem LTP-like plasticity in Huntington's disease.

Recent studies have reported abnormalities in short-term plasticity in patients with Huntington's disease (HD). However, is not known whether long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity is also affected in these patients. We tested cortical and brainstem LTP-like plasticity in eight symptomatic HD patients and in 10 healthy age-matched controls. To probe motor cortex LTP-like plasticity we used paired associative stimulation (PAS), a technique that combines repetitive electric stimulation of the median nerve with subsequent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the contralateral motor co

Visual short-term memory of stimulus velocity in patients with unilateral posterior brain damage.

Neurophysiological studies indicate the existence of an area in the extrastriate monkey cortex specialized for the processing of stimulus motion. The present investigation was conducted to determine whether a homologous area exits in the human cortex that underlies the processing and short-term storage of velocity information. Contrast detection and velocity discrimination thresholds were measured in a group of 23 patients with unilateral focal damage to either the lateral occipital, temporal, or posterior parietal cortex. Their results were compared to those of 23 age-matched control subjects

Motor cortex stimulation for intractable pain.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An altered growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF-I) axis occurs in advanced liver cirrhosis, characterised by diminished serum levels of IGF-I and increased concentrations of GH. Under normal conditions, GH release is mediated by somatostatin (SS) inhibition. However, the influence of SS on GH release in cirrhosis is not well known. IGF-I supplementation has beneficial effects in experimental cirrhosis, and - under physiological conditions - IGF-I increases SS, inhibiting GH. The aims of this work were to study SS tone in cirrhotic animals and to evaluate whether

Specificity in the interaction of HVA Ca2+ channel types with Ca2+-dependent AHPs and firing behavior in neocortical pyramidal neurons.

Intracellular recordings and organic and inorganic Ca2+ channel blockers were used in a neocortical brain slice preparation to test whether high-voltage-activated (HVA) Ca2+ channels are differentially coupled to Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarizations (AHPs) in sensorimotor neocortical pyramidal neurons. For the most part, spike repolarization was not Ca2+ dependent in these cells, although the final phase of repolarization (after the fast AHP) was sensitive to block of N-type current. Between 30 and 60% of the medium afterhyperpolarization (mAHP) and between approximately 80 and 90% of the sl
