INTRODUCTION: Adolescence and youth are periods of significant maturational changes, which seem to involve greater susceptibility to disruptive events in the brain, such as binge drinking (BD). This pattern-characterised by repeated episodes of alcohol intoxication-is of particular concern, as it has been associated with significant alterations in the developing brain. Recent evidence indicates that alcohol may also induce changes in gut microbiota composition and that such disturbances can lead to impairments in both brain function and behaviour. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting that mi

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is associated with nicotine use behaviours, the intensity of nicotine cravings, and the experience of withdrawal symptoms. Given the established influence of sex, brain-derived neurotrophic factor variants, personality traits and anxiety levels on nicotine use, this study aimed to conduct a comprehensive association analysis of these factors within a cohort of women who use nicotine. The study included 239 female participants: 112 cigarette users (mean age = 29.19, SD = 13.18) and 127 never-smokers (mean age = 28.1, SD =10.65). Study participants were e

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tobacco-free nicotine pouches (NPs) are oral nicotine products promoted by manufacturers and some researchers as tools that may reduce nicotine cravings and support smoking reduction or cessation. However, evidence regarding their actual clinical impact remains limited. This review aimed to evaluate the potential clinical effects of NPs in the context of smoking cessation, specifically focusing on user satisfaction, smoking urges and cigarette reduction compared with other nicotine and tobacco products.
DESIGN: Systematic review of randomized trials conducted in adult smo

Rates of opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose deaths have increased dramatically in recent years. Currently approved medications for OUD include the opioid agonists methadone and buprenorphine, and the opioid antagonist naltrexone. However, relapse rates are high due to an impaired ability for addicts to control their urge to consume due to strong cravings, and the extreme severity of withdrawal symptoms. Additionally, the nature of the agonists can lead to abuse of those compounds as well. Non-opioid targets, such as glutamate receptors, are potentially ideal for developing intervention str

OBJECTIVES: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is characterized as a chronic condition that was first outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, and now the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision. It encompasses frequent opioid usage, cravings, the development of tolerance, withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation, unsuccessful attempts to quit or reduce use, and recurrent use even when faced with negative consequences. Both national- and state-level data show that overdose deaths associated with prescription opioid

BACKGROUND: Gynecological issues and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose significant challenges to women's health, particularly in developing nations. These challenges are exacerbated by limited access to modern reproductive healthcare facilities, economic constraints, and entrenched cultural norms. Consequently, most of the Pakistani population relies on traditional ethno-medicinal healthcare systems. This preference stems from the ease of access, affordability, widespread availability, and inherent trust placed in these alternative healthcare methods.

Background Obesity is the pandemic of this era. At the same time, the commercialisation of thinness has also increased its adversity. Dissatisfaction with body shape is leading to many eating disorders. These disorders further cause several health problems. It has been found that individuals with eating disorders experience insomnia, depression, and anxiety. It also affects the endocrine system and digestive systems of the body. The surgical approach provides a more efficient treatment of obesity with sustainable results. Sleeve gastrectomy is the most popular surgical treatment. Sleeve gastre

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies using mobile apps and wearable devices are a promising approach to the investigation of substance use in the real world and for the analysis of predictive factors or harms from substance use. Moreover, consecutive repeated data collection enables the development of predictive algorithms for substance use by machine learning methods.
OBJECTIVE: We developed a new self-monitoring mobile app to record daily substance use, triggers, and cravings. Additionally, a wearable activity tracker (Fitbit) was used to collect objective biological and behavioral data

BACKGROUND: In the world scientific tradition, skin color is the primary physical characteristic used to divide humans into groups. Human skin has a wide range of tones and colors, which can be seen in a wide range of demographic populations. Many factors influence the color of people's skin, but the pigment melanin is by far the most important. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes in the skin and is the primary determinant of skin color in people with darker skin. Indeed, >150 genes have now been identified as having a direct or indirect effect on skin color. Vitamin D has recently

BACKGROUND: While there is robust evidence for strategies to reduce harms of illicit drug use, less attention has been paid to alcohol harm reduction for people experiencing severe alcohol use disorder (AUD), homelessness, and street-based illicit drinking. Managed Alcohol Programs (MAPs) provide safer and regulated sources of alcohol and other supports within a harm reduction framework. To reduce the impacts of heavy long-term alcohol use among MAP participants, cannabis substitution has been identified as a potential therapeutic tool.
METHODS: To determine the feasibility of cannabis substi

BACKGROUND: The reported high rate of relapse in the context of an ever-increasing rate of substance abuse internationally and in South Africa together with the fact that the topic of sustained recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) appears to be totally neglected in extant literature and research agendas motivated the researchers to conduct this investigation. The aim was to obtain an in-depth understanding of how individuals recovering from a SUD experience and sustain their recovery in order to fill the gap in the knowledge base.
METHODS: A qualitative research approach was followed, e

Background There are a number of false myths about buprenorphine based on unconfirmed animal data, even from isolated animal organs, and early clinical research. These myths came into textbooks on pharmacology and pain about 30 years ago and have been difficult to eradicate. Animal models of pain and pain relief are notoriously unreliable as predictors of human clinical effects. The fact is that in clinical practice there is NO bell-shaped dose-response curve, there is NO plateau on the dose-response curve, and there is NO antagonist effect from buprenorphine on other mu-opioid agonists. BACKGROUND: Approach Bias Modification (ApBM) is a recommended adjunctive intervention during residential treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), and there are also promising findings for ApBM as an adjunctive intervention for people in outpatient treatment. ApBM can be delivered via smartphone apps, yet little is known about how people interact with and interpret ApBM apps. We adopted an ‘evidence-making intervention’ approach to qualitatively explore experiences of an AUD ApBM app, to guide implementation in real-world settings. Whilst evidence-based research is mostly concerned with wheth

Background & aims: Walnuts are nutrient-dense foods rich in bioactive compounds that may support mental health. However, evidence linking walnut consumption to mood regulation and to changes in urinary metabolites potentially associated with these effects in humans remains limited. This randomized crossover trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the effects of an 8-week walnut (Juglans regia) intervention on mood states in young adults and to explore the potential mechanistic links through urinary serotonin metabolite (5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, 5-HIAA), cortisol, and urolithins. Methods: In this 18-w

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Food intake sequence can influence postprandial glycaemia and appetite in non-athletic populations. However, it remains unclear whether these effects extend to athletes, who often consume high-carbohydrate diets and exhibit distinct metabolic responses. This study aimed to compare postprandial metabolic and appetite responses to two food intake sequences in athletes.
METHODS: In a randomised, counterbalanced, outcome assessor-blinded crossover trial, 14 highly trained male football players [22.9 (3.1) y, 23.4 (1.7) kg.m-2, 5.3 (0.4)% HbA1c] consumed a standardised breakfast

BACKGROUND: Due to limited access to evidence-based cessation support, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults are half as likely to quit commercial cigarette smoking as other racial and ethnic groups. Geographical barriers, underfunded health systems, and limited integration of cessation services into routine care have reduced access to effective treatment in AI/AN communities. These challenges are compounded by a lack of culturally relevant interventions tailored to AI/AN adults. Thus, there is an urgent need for accessible, scalable, and culturally relevant interventions.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health interventions, particularly dynamic Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs), can overcome barriers to gambling treatment by offering timely, accessible support in people's everyday lives. GamblingLess: In-The-Moment is a theoretically-informed and evidence-based app-delivered JITAI to people who want to quit or reduce their gambling. The JITAI aims to reduce gambling symptom severity through short-term reductions in the likelihood of gambling episodes by improving cognitive vulnerability (craving intensity, self-efficacy, or positive outcome expectancies).
