Butt Why? Exploring factors associated with cigarette scavenging behaviors among adult smokers enrolling in a clinical trial for smoking cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking is associated with many adverse health effects and is an important public health concern. Increased understanding of smokers' behavior is central to developing effective interventions. Cigarette scavenging, a behavior that involves smoking shared or previously used cigarettes has thus far only been shown to be prevalent among homeless or incarcerated populations. The current study examines whether cigarette scavenging is prevalent in a more general population of adult smokers enrolling in a smoking cessation clinical trial, and whether engagement in this behavio

Naloxone Training Among Sorority-Affiliated College Students: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: As a population, college students are known to be at risk for adverse substance use-related events, such as opioid overdose, as they seek relief from academic and social stressors. Sorority affiliation in this population is reputed to be another risk factor for increased substance use and misuse. Many college students are not aware that illicitly made fentanyl is often mixed with other commonly used substances, such as marijuana and cocaine (among others), potentially leading to unintentional overdose and even death. The timely administration of naloxone, an opioid antagonist, can

Recognizing, diagnosing, and preventing child maltreatment: an update for pediatric clinicians.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite an increasing understanding of the impact of emotional trauma and physical abuse on children, clinicians and hospitals still sometimes miss the diagnosis of abuse. The literature in 2017 focused on creating standardized approaches to recognition and diagnosis of physical abuse and occult injury, including using the electronic medical record to provide triggers for consultation of the hospital Child Protection Program. The American College of Radiology updated their standardized approach to the evaluation of physical abuse in the child, and other authors gave us scree

In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect of Tetrahydrocannabinol on Streptococcus mutans and Its Anticariogenic Potential.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: With the increasing use of marijuana, it is vital to understand the effect of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on oral microbiota, especially the primary carious pathogen Streptococcus mutans. METHODS: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of THC against S mutans was determined by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Bacterial acid production was evaluated. The effect of THC on S mutans biofilm formation and preformed biofilms was determined by crystal violet assay. The metabolic activity and viability of the biofilm were assessed using the methylthiazolyldiphenyl tetra

Optimization and Evaluation of Cannabis-Based Magistral Formulations: A Path to Personalized Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The official implementation of pharmaceutical-grade cannabis raw materials for medicinal use has permitted doctors to prescribe and pharmacists to prepare cannabis-based formulations. The objective of the pharmaceutical development and manufacturing process optimization work was to propose a suppository formulation containing doses of 25 mg and 50 mg of tetra-hydrocannabinol (∆-9-THC) as an alternative to existing inhalable or orally administered formulations. The formulation could be used for rectal or vaginal administration, thereby providing dosage control in the treatment of

Cannabis Use Disorder Associated With Increased Risk of Postoperative Complications After Hip or Knee Arthroplasties: A Meta-analysis of Observational Studies.

INTRODUCTION: With the legalization of marijuana in the United States, the number of patients with cannabis use disorder (CUD) in the joint arthroplasty population has increased markedly. The primary purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine whether there were differences in clinical and economic outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) between patients with and without perioperative CUD. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to July 2018 to identify all eligible studies investigating the association of CUD with postoperative outcomes in patien

Select Minor Cannabinoids from Cannabis sativa Are Cannabimimetic and Antinociceptive in a Mouse Model of Chronic Neuropathic Pain.

Chronic pain conditions affect nearly 20% of the population in the United States. Current medical interventions, such as opioid drugs, are effective at relieving pain but are accompanied by many undesirable side effects. This is one reason increased numbers of chronic pain patients have been turning to Cannabis for pain management. Cannabis contains many bioactive chemical compounds; however, current research looking into lesser-studied minor cannabinoids in Cannabis lacks uniformity between experimental groups and/or excludes female mice from investigation. This makes it challenging to draw c

Association of adverse prenatal exposure burden with child psychopathology in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous adverse prenatal exposures have been individually associated with risk for psychiatric illness in the offspring. However, such exposures frequently co-occur, raising questions about their cumulative impact. We evaluated effects of cumulative adverse prenatal exposure burden on psychopathology risk in school-aged children. METHODS: Using baseline surveys from the U.S.-based Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (7,898 non-adopted, unrelated children from 21 sites, age 9-10, and their primary caregivers), we examined 8 retrospectively-reported adverse prena

Age- and Sex-Related Cortical Gray Matter Volume Differences in Adolescent Cannabis Users: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Voxel-Based Morphometry Studies.

Introduction: Adolescent-onset cannabis use is rising in the era of marijuana legalization. Recent imaging studies have identified neuroanatomical differences between adult cannabis users and controls that are more prominent in early-onset users. Other studies point to sex-dependent effects of cannabis. Methods: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines and subsequent effect-size seed-based d mapping (SDM) meta-analyses were conducted to investigate relationships between age (across the 12-to-21-year-old developmental window), sex, and gray matter volume (GMV) differences between cannabi

Age of drinking onset and injuries, motor vehicle crashes, and physical fights after drinking and when not drinking.

BACKGROUND: Earlier age of drinking onset has been associated with greater odds of involvement in motor vehicle crashes, unintentional injuries, and physical fights after drinking. This study explores whether early drinkers take more risks even when sober by comparing potential associations between age of drinking onset and these outcomes after drinking relative to when respondents have not been drinking. METHOD: From a national sample, 4,021 ever-drinkers ages 18 to 39 were asked age of drinking onset, not counting tastes or sips. They were also asked if they were ever in motor vehicle crash

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and associations with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child cohort.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that are slow to break down in the environment and widely detected in humans. Epidemiological evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a legacy PFAS, is linked to gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. However, the relationship between other PFAS, which are structurally similar, and these outcomes remains largely understudied, despite biologic plausibility. Here, we examined associations between serum PFAS mixtures in relation to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy within a birth

State Medical Cannabis Laws Associated With Reduction in Opioid Prescriptions by Orthopaedic Surgeons in Medicare Part D Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid prescriptions and abuse remain a significant national concern. Cannabinoids offer a potentially attractive nonopioid analgesic option for orthopaedic patients, and 32 US states have passed medical cannabis laws (MCLs), legalizing patient access to cannabinoids. We examine the association between implementation of state cannabis laws and prescribing patterns for opioids by orthopaedic surgeons in Medicare Part D patients between 2013 and 2017. METHODS: Using the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Event database, we measured annual aggregate daily doses of all opioid medicat
