BACKGROUND: The Gran Chaco ecoregion is a well-known hotspot of several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) including Chagas disease, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and multiparasitic infections. Interspecific interactions between parasite species can modify host susceptibility, pathogenesis and transmissibility through immunomodulation. Our objective was to test the association between human co-infection with intestinal parasites and host parasitaemia, infectiousness to the vector and immunological profiles in Trypanosoma cruzi-seropositive individuals residing in an endemic region of the Arge

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article presents a comprehensive narrative review of reactive arthritis (ReA) with focus on articles published between 2018 and 2020. We discuss the entire spectrum of microbial agents known to be the main causative agents of ReA, those reported to be rare infective agents, and those reported to be new candidates causing the disease. The discussion is set within the context of changing disease terminology, definition, and classification over time. Further, we include reports that present at least a hint of effective antimicrobial therapy for ReA as documented in case re

Humans and dogs are the two major hosts of Strongyloides stercoralis, an intestinal parasitic nematode. To better understand the phylogenetic relationships among S. stercoralis isolates infecting humans and dogs and to assess the zoonotic potential of this parasite, we analyzed mitochondrial Cox1, nuclear 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, and a major sperm protein domain-containing protein genes. Overall, our analyses indicated the presence of two distinct lineages of S. stercoralis (referred to as type A and type B). While type A parasites were isolated both from humans and dogs in different countries, typ

Parasitic nematodes are significant pathogens of humans and other animals. The molecular and genetic basis of animal parasitism is not yet fully understood. Strongyloides spp. are a genus of gastrointestinal nematodes of which species infect approximately 100–200 million people worldwide. S. ratti is a natural parasite of the rat, and a useful and amenable laboratory model. Previous EST and microarray analyses of the S. ratti life cycle have identified genes whose expression was specific, or biased, to the parasitic adult stage, suggesting that they may play a key role in parasitism in this sp

Mice infected with Schistosoma japonicum were resistant to the intestinal nematode, Strongyloides venezuelensis. The numbers of adult S. venezuelensis recovered from mice were significantly decreased when infections were given from 6 weeks after S. japonicum infection. Larval recovery from the lungs showed that significant numbers of subcutaneously inoculated S. venezuelensis larvae were eliminated by 3 days in S. japonicum-infected mice (P < 0.0001), while histology revealed that this was associated with massive eosinophilic infiltration in the lungs. In addition, adult S. venezuelensis worms

Angiostrongyliasis is an infectious disease caused by nematode parasites of the genus Angiostrongylus. The rat lung worm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, primarily a parasite of rodents, is largely responsible for human cases of eosinophilic meningitis, or meningoencerphalitis, which occurs on many Pacific islands and in Southeast Asia. The disorder, which frequently occurs in epidemic extent, is caused by invasion of the central nervous system by developing larvae of the parasite. The infection is most frequently due to ingestion of food containing the infective, third-state, larvae. Meningitic a

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a globally prevalent retrovirus associated with adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Despite substantial research, the high mortality risk among HTLV-1 carriers remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify primary causes of hospital admission, predictors of mortality, and long-term survival outcomes in HTLV-1-infected patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in two referral hospitals in Mashhad, Iran, from 2011 to 2

BACKGROUND: Helminths affect the outcome of tuberculosis by shifting cell mediated immune response to humoral and by total suppression of the host immune system. On the reverse, Mycobacterium infection favors immune escape of helminths. Therefore assessing helminth co-infection rate and predisposing factors in tuberculosis patients is mandatory to set strategies for better case management.
METHODS: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted in Arba Minch to assess the prevalence and associated factors of intestinal helminths among pulmonary tuberculosis patients from January to August

This study evaluated the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection in the population. In addition, this study investigated the relationship between S. stercoralis infection or HTLV-1 infection and a patient's risk of developing related cancers. This is a retrospective cohort study of 5,209 patients. The prevalence of S. stercoralis infection was 5.2% among all patients. The prevalence among men (6.3%) was significantly higher than among women (3.6%, P < 0.001). The prevalence of HTLV-1 infection among this population was 13.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection has been modifying both the epidemiology and outcome of parasitic infections. Hence, this study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection among people with and without HIV infection and its association with diarrhea and CD4 T-cell count.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hawassa Teaching and Referral Hospital focusing on HIV positive individuals, who gave blood for CD4 T-cell count at their first enrollment and clients tested HIV negative from November, 2008 to March, 2009. Data on socio-demographic factors and diarr

OBJECTIVE: We investigated changes in hematologic and biochemical parameters associated with human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection, antibody titer, and provirus load. Additionally, on a subset of participants, we assessed the epidemiologic relationship of HTLV-1 with Strongyloides stercoralis.
METHODS: Among volunteer blood donors in Jamaica, HTLV-1 carriers (n=482) were frequency matched with HTLV-1 negative subjects (n=355) by age (+/-5 years), sex, and date of blood donation (+/-3 months). HTLV-1 antibody titer, provirus load, S. stercoralis IgG antibodies, complete blood ce

INTRODUCTION: Disseminated anguilluliasis is a serious disease requiring early diagnosis and treatment. The occurrence of bacterial complications, especially meningeal, is generally due to Gram-negative bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract.
CASE: A 52-year-old man from Guadeloupe, treated for T-lymphoma during the previous year by polychemotherapy, was hospitalized for meningitis. Culture of the cerebrospinal fluid and the bronchoalveolar lavage both showed Enterococcus faecalis. Strongyloides stercoralis were also found in the stool and bronchoalveolar lavage. Outcome under treatment was

A survey of intestinal parasitism was conducted at Yaviza, a town in eastern Panama's Province of Darien. Single stool specimens from 202 persons, representing 11 percent of the town's total population, were examined. In all, 181 (90 per cent) of the specimens examined were found positive for one or more potentially pathogenic parasites. The most common parasite found was Trichuris trichiura, which was observed in 80 per cent of the samples. Others were Ascaris lumbricoides, in 62 per cent of the samples; hookworm, in 41 per cent; Entamoeba histolytica, in 16 per cent; Stronhyloides stercorali

The infection burden of Strongyloides stercoralis in India remains poorly defined. We aimed to estimate the burden of S. stercoralis infection among immunocompromised patients at our tertiary care hospital in north India and evaluated the performance of multiple diagnostic tests. Paired stool and blood samples were collected from 498 immunosuppressed individuals. Screening included stool microscopy without concentration, Baermann's funnel method, Agar plate and Harada Mori cultures, 18S ribosomal RNA gene real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and anti-Strongyloides IgG antibody ELISA.

These updated guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation review the diagnosis, prevention, and management of intestinal parasites in the pre- and post-transplant period. Intestinal parasites are prevalent in the developing regions of the world. With increasing travel to and from endemic regions, changing immigration patterns, and the expansion of transplant medicine in developing countries, they are increasingly recognized as a source of morbidity and mortality in solid-organ transplant recipients. Parasitic infections may be acquir

Infection with the helminth parasite Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) is commonly clinically asymptomatic that is often accompanied by peripheral eosinophilia. Granulocytes are activated during helminth infection and can act as immune effector cells. Plasma levels of eosinophil and neutrophil granular proteins convey an indirect measure of granulocyte degranulation and are prominently augmented in numerous helminth-infected patients. In this study, we sought to examine the levels of eosinophil, neutrophil, and mast cell activation-associated granule proteins in asymptomatic Ss infection and to u

With the push towards control and elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis in low- and middle-income countries, there is a need to develop alternative diagnostic assays that complement the current in-country resources, preferably at a lower cost. Here, we describe a novel high-resolution melt (HRM) curve assay with six PCR primer pairs, designed to sub-regions of the nuclear ribosomal locus. Used within a single reaction and dye detection channel, they are able to discriminate Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Ascaris lumbricoides, T
