Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumor: clinicopathologic study of 17 cases and molecular analysis of the p53 pathway.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) occurring at various extrapleural sites is sometimes difficult to diagnose because of its histologic variability. Although a solitary fibrous tumor is usually a slow-growing tumor with favorable prognosis, a small number of malignant cases have been reported. In the present study, we examined the clinical behavior, histologic, immunohistochemical and molecular features of 17 cases of extrapleural SFT. Four tumors were located in the pelvic cavity, two in the nasal cavity, two were confined to the pulmonary parenchyma, and there was one each in the meninges, kidney,

In vitro differentiation of human oocyte-like cells from oogonial stem cells: single-cell isolation and molecular characterization.

STUDY QUESTION: Are the large cells derived from cultured DEAD box polypeptide 4 (DDX4)-positive oogonial stem cells (OSCs), isolated from the ovarian cortex of non-menopausal and menopausal women, oocyte-like cells? SUMMARY ANSWER: Under appropriate culture conditions, DDX4-positive OSCs from non-menopausal and menopausal women differentiate into large haploid oocyte-like cells expressing the major oocyte markers growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF-9) and synaptonemal complex protein 3 (SYCP3) and then enter meiosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The recent reports of OSCs in the ovaries of non-m

Oral and Maxillo-Facial Manifestations of Systemic Diseases: An Overview.

Many systemic (infective, genetic, autoimmune, neoplastic) diseases may involve the oral cavity and, more generally, the soft and hard tissues of the head and neck as primary or secondary localization. Primary onset in the oral cavity of both pediatric and adult diseases usually represents a true challenge for clinicians; their precocious detection is often difficult and requires a wide knowledge but surely results in the early diagnosis and therapy onset with an overall better prognosis and clinical outcomes. In the current paper, as for the topic of the current Special Issue, the authors pre

Calcification of the heart and great vessels.

Calcification of the heart and great vessels is secondary to those diseases which cause a significant alteration of tissue matrix. Metabolic derangements can cause microscopic calcification of heart muscle, but this has not been demonstrated conclusively roentgenographically. The deposition of calcium may follow a single event or be the result of a longstanding process. The etiology and roentgen appearance of calcium deposition in the various tissues which comprise the heart and great vessels are reveiwed. The common as well as the rare cases are considered; if possible, each entity is demonst

Rare Diseases of the Orbit.

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a

Solitary amyloid tumor of the palate: A case report and literature review.

Amyloidosis is often caused by the abnormal extracellular accumulation of amyloid in organs and tissues. This condition, affecting the head and neck region, is typically localized, and may also involve the oral cavity, particularly the tongue and buccal mucosa. As a solitary manifestation, the localized amyloidosis occurring intraosseous is highly infrequent. In addition, localized amyloidosis has a great rate of recurrence. In this paper, a 50-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of pain in the anterior of the maxilla is reported. According to clinical examination, no significant

Tumor angiogenesis as a target for dietary cancer prevention.

Between 2000 and 2050, the number of new cancer patients diagnosed annually is expected to double, with an accompanying increase in treatment costs of more than $80 billion over just the next decade. Efficacious strategies for cancer prevention will therefore be vital for improving patients' quality of life and reducing healthcare costs. Judah Folkman first proposed antiangiogenesis as a strategy for preventing dormant microtumors from progressing to invasive cancer. Although antiangiogenic drugs are now available for many advanced malignancies (colorectal, lung, breast, kidney, liver, brain,

Rare Diseases of the Nose, the Paranasal Sinuses, and the Anterior Skull Base.

Due to their low incidence and thus resulting limited diagnostic criteria as well as therapeutic options, rare diseases of the nose, the paranasal sinuses, and the anterior skull base are a significant challenge. The value as of which a disease has to be considered as rare amounts to a maximum of 5 patients per 10 000 people. Within these diseases, however, there are extreme differences. Some rare or orphan diseases like for example the inverted papilloma belong to regularly diagnosed and treated diseases of larger departments of oto-rhino-laryngology whereas other rare diseases and malformati

Skin manifestations associated with systemic diseases - Part II.

The skin, by reflecting internal processes, externalizes what happens inside the body in many diseases. Thus, the skin, as an organ, extrapolates its functions of protection, barrier and signals the existence of systemic diseases, expanding the importance of the dermatologist beyond the skin surface. Thus, the dermatologist investigates diagnostic hypotheses for conditions related to all systems and refers patients to the appropriate specialty. Combined with examination by a trained eye, the skin, due to its easy access, is still the ideal place for performing biopsies, which often clarify the

Safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of JMT103 in patients with bone metastases from solid tumors.

Bone metastases are common complications of solid tumors. The outcome is poor despite major progress in cancer therapies. We describe a multicenter, open-label, phase 1, dose escalation and expansion trial of JMT103, a novel fully humanized receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)-targeting monoclonal antibody, in adults with bone metastases from solid tumors. The study assessed the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of JMT103. Patients received JMT103 at doses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mg/kg every 4 weeks for 3 cycles. Among 59 patients enrolled, 20

Radiolucent lesions of the mandible: a pattern-based approach to diagnosis.

ObjectivesRadiolucent mandibular lesions seen on panoramic radiographs develop from both odontogenic and non-odontogenic structures. They represent a broad spectrum of lesions with a varying degree of malignant potential. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the characteristic imaging findings-as well as the clinical and histological features-of common and uncommon radiolucent lesions of the mandible.MethodsThis review article is based on the retrospective evaluation of 11,725 panoramic radiographs seen in our institution during the past 6 years. It provides a comprehensive, practical a

Recurrent Mandibular Ewing sarcoma in an 11-year-old boy: a rare pediatric case and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Mandibular Ewing sarcoma is exceptionally rare in children and frequently mimics common odontogenic infections. This overlap leads to delayed diagnosis and potentially rapid tumor progression. Early recognition and appropriate multimodal management are critical for improving outcomes. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 11.5-year-old Iranian boy of Middle Eastern ethnicity presented with progressive left mandibular swelling and pain for 1 month, unresponsive to antibiotic therapy previously prescribed for presumed dental abscess. DIAGNOSIS: Imaging (CT, MRI) revealed an aggressive destructive ma

NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Isophorone (CAS No. 78-59-1) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies).

Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of isophorone (greater than 94% pure), a widely used solvent and chemical intermediate, were conducted by administering 0, 250, or 500 mg isophorone/kg body weight per day by gavage in corn oil to groups of 50 F344/N rats and 50 B6C3F1 mice of each sex, 5 days per week for 103 weeks. Doses selected for the 2-year studies were based on the 16-day studies in which rats and mice of each sex received doses of 0-2,000 mg/kg per day and on 13-week studies in which rats and mice of each sex received doses ranging from 0 to 1,000 mg/kg per day by gavage in corn oi

The unusual first sign of presentation of hepatocellular carcinoma: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy, characterized by aggressive biological behavior and a high propensity for extrahepatic spread. The most common sites of metastasis are the lungs, regional lymph nodes, bones, adrenal glands, and peritoneum. In contrast, the paranasal sinuses are an unusual site for metastatic HCC, and involvement of the sphenoid sinus represents an even rarer event. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 67-year-old male patient who presented with transient diplopia, left eyelid ptosis, and refractory epistaxis as the i

Spinal brown tumors as a rare cause of spinal cord compression: Report of case series.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Brown tumors (BTs) are rare benign osteolytic lesions that arise in the context of uncontrolled hyperparathyroidism. They mostly located in the large bone and rarely in the spine. Spine involvement can cause neurologic symptoms and rarely spinal cord compression. The aim of this study is to diagnose BTs of the spine in presence of spinal cord compression symptoms leading to appropriate treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: Retrospective study of 4 cases of Brown tumors revealed by spine cord compression and rapidly operated in our neurosurgery department between 2014 and

Solitary Plasmacytoma of the Breast: A Case of an Uncommon Breast Neoplasm.

Plasmacytoma is a rare cancer that originates from a single plasma cell and is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of monoclonal plasma cells. It is typically localized in a single area of the body, most commonly in the bone or soft tissue. Solitary plasmacytoma can be further classified as either solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) or solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP or EMP). Diagnosis may be delayed in symptomatically silent plasmacytomas, but early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for the management of this disease. The mean age for patients with plasmacytoma vari
