Design of Alginate-Based Bionanocomposites with Electrical Conductivity for Active Food Packaging.

Bionanocomposite materials have been designed as a promising route to enhance biopolymer properties, especially for food packaging application. The present study reports the preparation of bionanocomposite films of alginate with different loadings of pure reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or of mixed zinc oxide-rGO (ZnO-rGO) fillers by solvent casting. Sepiolite is used to make compatible rGO with the hydrophilic matrix. The addition of fillers to alginate matrix maintains the low water solubility promoted by the calcium chloride treatment, and, additionally, they demonstrate a weaker mechanical pr

Nanohybrid-based immunosensor prepared for Helicobacter pylori BabA antigen detection through immobilized antibody assembly with @ Pdnano/rGO/PEDOT sensing platform.

The gastric colonization of human hosts by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) increases the risk of developing gastritis, ulcers and gastric cancer. To detect H. pylori, a nanohybrid-based BabA immunosensor is developed herein. BabA is an outer membrane protein and one of the major virulence factors of H. pylori. To design the immunosensor, an Au electrode is loaded with palladium nanoparticles (Pdnano) by electrodeposition to generate reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The immobilization of these nanostructured materials imparts a large surface area and electr

AgNPs/QDs@GQDs nanocomposites developed as an ultrasensitive impedimetric aptasensor for ractopamine detection.

Developing easy-to-use and miniaturized sensors for in-field monitoring of targets which is related to human health is necessary. Ractopamine (RAC) is a feed additive with serious side effects that is forbidden in many countries. This study reports the fabrication of an impedimetric aptasensor for ultrasensitive and selective detection of the RAC in human biological fluids. Accordingly, an efficient nanocomposites was synthesized by a beneficial combination of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), quantum dots (QDs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Graphene oxide exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacterial phytopathogens and fungal conidia by intertwining and membrane perturbation.

To understand the interaction mechanism between graphene oxide (GO) and typical phytopathogens, a particular investigation was conducted about the antimicrobial activity of GO against two bacterial pathogens (P. syringae and X. campestris pv. undulosa) and two fungal pathogens (F. graminearum and F. oxysporum). The results showed that GO had a powerful effect on the reproduction of all four pathogens (killed nearly 90% of the bacteria and repressed 80% macroconidia germination along with partial cell swelling and lysis at 500 μg mL(-1)). A mutual mechanism is proposed in this work that GO inte

Ventilation perfusion scintigraphy and lung function testing to assess metal stent efficacy.

UNLABELLED: Stent implantation in malignant bronchial stenoses is a highly effective method of providing symptomatic relief by restoring bronchial patency. Whether an improvement in ventilatory conditions is paralleled by an increase in blood flow and gas exchange has not yet been determined. METHODS: Fourteen patients with malignant, high-grade obstruction of bronchi who had metal stent implantation were investigated. Before the intervention and again 8 days afterward, both quantitative technegas ventilation and 99mTc-MAA perfusion scans (V/Q scans) and lung function tests were performed. R

Image-Guided Dual Magnetic-Photothermal Hyperthermia Using a Multifunctional Fe3O4-PANI-GQD Biomaterial Platform.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a therapeutic challenge owing to the lack of molecular targets and high recurrence rates. Here, we report a multifunctional magneto-photothermal nanoplatform (FPG), engineered from a magnetic Fe3O4 core, a near infrared (NIR)-active polyaniline shell, and fluorescent graphene quantum dots for image-guided combined hyperthermia. FPG demonstrated superior colloidal stability, retained superparamagnetism, and exhibited strong NIR absorption. Upon exposure to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) and 808 nm laser irradiation, FPG consistently raised suspe

The interrupted effect of autophagic flux and lysosomal function induced by graphene oxide in p62-dependent apoptosis of F98 cells.

BACKGROUND: Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely applied in various fields, especially in biomedical applications. Extensive studies have suggested that GO can pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and induce abnormal autophagy and cytotoxicity in the central nervous system (CNS). However, the effect and specific mechanism of GO on astrocytes, the most abundant cells in the brain still has not been extensively investigated. RESULTS: In this study, we systematically explored the toxicity and mechanism of GO exposure in the rat astroglioma-derived F98 cell line using mo

Nanographene oxide-based radioimmunoconstructs for in vivo targeting and SPECT imaging of HER2-positive tumors.

Nanographene oxide (NGO) is a novel nano-wall material that tracks to tumors in vivo, and which, as a consequence of its large surface area, has the capacity to carry a large payload. This study explores the use of anti-HER2 antibody (trastuzumab)-conjugated NGO, radiolabeled with (111)In-benzyl-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (BnDTPA) via ππ-stacking, for functional imaging. In two HER2-overexpressing murine models of human breast cancer, high tumor-to-muscle ratio was achieved, resulting in clear visualization of tumor using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). [Research advances in the preparation and structural characterization of depolymerized oligosaccharides from traditional Chinese medicine].

Polysaccharides derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent bioactivities, such as immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. However, these polysaccharides exhibit inherent characteristics including large molecular weights, complex monosaccharide compositions, and diverse branched structures. These features result in low bioavailability and difficulties in unraveling their structure-activity relationships (SARs), thereby imposing significant limitations on their practical applications. In contrast, oligosaccharid

Superior Interfacial Contact Yields Efficient Electron Transfer Rate and Enhanced Solar Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation in M/C3N4 Schottky Junctions.

Various literature studies (Table 6) have reported that dispersion of metal nanoparticles (NPs) on graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 (M/CN) has considerably improved the photocatalytic hydrogen yield. It is understood that metal NPs create active sites on the surface of CN and act as a cocatalyst. However, the precise changes induced by different metal NPs on the surface of CN still elude us. Here, we report a thorough understanding and comparison of the morphology, metal-support interactions, interfacial charge transfer kinetics, and band characteristics in different M/CN (M = Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, C

Biocompatible graphene-based nanoagent with NIR and magnetism dual-responses for effective bacterial killing and removal.

Antibiotics have been widely used in clinical applications to treat pathogenic infections at present, but the problem of drug-resistance associated with the abuse of antibiotics has become a large threat to human beings. Herein, we developed an antibacterial nanoagent by coating quaternized chitosan (QCS) on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles-anchored graphene oxide (GO), which enabled QCS and GO to achieve synergistic effects on killing the drug-resistant bacteria. Systematical antibacterial experiments showed that the prepared nanoagent had antibacterial ability, which was significantly enha

Biological Uptake, Distribution, and Depuration of Radio-Labeled Graphene in Adult Zebrafish: Effects of Graphene Size and Natural Organic Matter.

The exciting commercial application potential of graphene materials may inevitably lead to their increasing release into the environment where they may pose ecological risks. This study focused on using carbon-14-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) to determine whether the size of graphene plays a role in its uptake, depuration, and biodistribution in adult zebrafish. After 48 h exposure to larger FLG (L-FLG) at 250 μg/L, the amount of graphene in the organism was close to 48 mg/kg fish dry mass, which was more than 170-fold greater than the body burden of those exposed to the same concentration

Fluorescent Ultrashort Nanotubes.

ConspectusUltrashort single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), defined here as ∼1 to 50 nm segments, match the characteristic dimensions of biological pores, nanofluidic channels, and emerging quantum architectures, where quantum confinement, topological edge states─electronic states localized at the tube termini─and atomic defects converge to generate new functionalities for sensing, imaging, and optoelectronics. Yet this length regime has been largely inaccessible optically: ultrashort SWCNTs rarely emit light because mobile excitons rapidly diffuse to quenching sites at the tube ends. Fluore

Bioinspired Nanofluidic Temperate Synthesis.

ConspectusThe development of new methodologies for efficient and selective catalysis under mild, green conditions is critical in synthetic chemistry. While nanoconfined catalysis has emerged as a powerful way for modulating reaction pathways, existing systems lack continuously interconnected confined channels and fail to achieve precise control over the size and length of these channels, making it difficult to achieve rapid reaction at room temperature, along with difficulty in achieving ∼100% conversion and ∼100% selectivity. Learning from nature may provide a solution to this challenge. As n

The role of copper, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc in nutrition and health.

Copper, zinc, selenium, and molybdenum are involved in many biochemical processes supporting life. The most important of these processes are cellular respiration, cellular utilization of oxygen, DNA and RNA reproduction, maintenance of cell membrane integrity, and sequestration of free radicals. Copper, zinc, and selenium are involved in destruction of free radicals through cascading enzyme systems. Superoxide radicals are reduced to hydrogen peroxide by superoxide dismutases in the presence of copper and zinc cofactors. Hydrogen peroxide is then reduced to water by the selenium-glutathione pe

Construction and characterization of a theranostic system based on graphene/manganese chelate.

Construction of hybrid systems that combine the cancer treatment and diagnosis agents on a single platform, known as theranostic systems, have received great attentions in the field of nanobiomedicine. Here, construction and characterization of a new multifunctional hybrid theranostic system based on RGO, PDA, BSA, DTPA-Mn(II), and MTX constituents, is presented. Accordingly, GO is partially reduced and simultaneously functionalized by dopamine, leading to reduced graphene oxide/polydopamine, RGO-PDA system; and then, the bovine serum albumin protein (BSA) is grafted onto this system. Highly sensitive and selective detection of biothiols using graphene oxide-based "molecular beacon"-like fluorescent probe.

A fluorometric method for quantity analysis of biothiols was developed using a graphene oxide (GO)-based "molecular beacon"-like probe, which consisted of FITC labeled thymine (T)-rich single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), GO and Hg(2+) ions. The labeled ssDNA containing T-T mismatches would self-hybridize to duplex in the presence of Hg(2+), which can avoid its adsorption on GO and the fluorescence of this GO-based probe was recovered. The fluorescence of the probe quenched after the addition of biothiols such as glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cys) owing to thiol groups can selectively competitive li
