Antibiofilm Platform based on the Combination of Antimicrobial Polymers and Essential Oils.

The development of potent strategies to counter microbial biofilm is an urgent priority in healthcare. The majority of bacterial infections in humans are biofilm related, however, effective treatments are still lacking especially for combating multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. Herein, we report an effective antibiofilm platform based on the use of synthetic antimicrobial polymers in combination with essential oils, where the antimicrobial polymers play a secondary role as delivery vehicle for essential oils. Two ternary antimicrobial polymers consisting of cationic primary amines, low-fouling

Linalool attenuates lung inflammation induced by Pasteurella multocida via activating Nrf-2 signaling pathway.

Pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida manifest often as respiratory infection in farmed small ruminants. Although the incidence of pasteurellosis due to P. multocida mainly takes the form of pneumonia, there is limited information on host factors that play a role in disease pathogenesis in the milieu of host-pathogen interactions. Nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf-2), a critical regulator for various inflammatory and immune responses by controlling oxidative stress, may play an important role in the processes of inflammation induced by P. multocida. In this study, linal

Schistosoma mansoni: in vitro schistosomicidal activity of essential oil of Baccharis trimera (less) DC.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease caused by the trematode species Schistosoma mansoni. Chemotherapy is the only immediate recourse to minimize the prevalence and incidence of this disease worldwide. At present, praziquantel (PZQ) is the drug of choice for the treatment of all forms of schistosomiasis. However, dependence on a single drug is concern because some strains can become resistant. In this context, medicinal plants become potential candidates as sources of new drug prototypes. This study provides findings on the schistosomicidal activity of the essential oil of Baccharis

Sustainable thymol-based formulations with amoxicillin and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) against antibiotics is caused by the evolution of pathogens to endure antibiotics, rendering once powerful treatments now useless. Amoxicillin (A), a well-known antibiotic is subjected to AMR and could be more effective in combination with plant-based extracts. Tea Tree essential oil (T) and thymol (t) are known antimicrobial agents but are hampered by their lipophilicity, volatility, oxidative degradation and skin irritation. These disadvantages can be mitigated by combinations to achieve better drug delivery outcomes. Thymol, a monoterpenoid has remarkable anti

Development of a proactive-diagnostic smart packaging system for real-time freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension of refrigerated broiler breast.

Fresh broiler breast meat is highly susceptible to rapid microbial proliferation and lipid oxidation during refrigerated storage, necessitating advanced preservation and quality-monitoring strategies. This study developed an eco-friendly, dual-functional "proactive-diagnostic" smart packaging system by incorporating lemongrass essential oil (LEO; 0, 2.5, and 5.0% w/v) into a transglutaminase-crosslinked fish gelatin/sodium alginate active matrix, coupled with a headspace butterfly pea anthocyanin (BPA) colorimetric indicator. Results indicated that LEO incorporation significantly (p < 0.05) en

Preventive effects and underlying mechanisms of Ilex rotunda Thunb.-Cyperus rotundus L. herb pair extract on avian colibacillosis in chickens.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major bottleneck limiting the sustainable development of global animal husbandry. Avian colibacillosis, caused by Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), incurs severe economic losses in the poultry industry due to its high pathogenicity, multidrug resistance, and potential zoonotic risk. This study aimed to clarify the material basis of the Ilex rotunda Thunb.-Cyperus rotundus L. herb pair and its preventive mechanisms against avian colibacillosis in chickens. Volatile oil from C. rotundus and water-soluble components of the herb pair were co-extracted vi

Changes in thyroid function of nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) in relation to polycyclic aromatic compounds and other environmental stressors in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region.

In the Canadian Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR), nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) raised near mining-related activities accumulated greater concentrations of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) that contributed to their poorer condition, growth, and reproductive success. Here, we report changes in thyroid function of the same 14 day old (do) nestlings (N ≤ 68) at these mining-related sites (OS1, OS2) compared to reference nestlings (REF1), and in relation to multiple environmental stressors that influence avian thyroid function. Thyroid function was compromised for OS1 nestlings

Air quality concerns of unconventional oil and natural gas production.

Increased use of hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") in unconventional oil and natural gas (O & NG) development from coal, sandstone, and shale deposits in the United States (US) has created environmental concerns over water and air quality impacts. In this perspective we focus on how the production of unconventional O & NG affects air quality. We pay particular attention to shale gas as this type of development has transformed natural gas production in the US and is set to become important in the rest of the world. A variety of potential emission sources can be spread over tens of thousands of

Comparison of models for the estimation of biological partition coefficients.

Several models have been published for calculating blood-air, tissue-air, or tissue-blood partition coefficients of volatile organic chemicals in human or rat tissues, from functions of their octanol-water partition coefficients or solubilities in vegetable oil and water. In this work, the relative accuracy, strengths, and limitations of the various models are examined. Comparison of predicted human tissue-air and tissue-blood partition coefficients with experimental values has been made for 12 chemicals, covering a wide range of lipophilicity (acetone, isopropanol, diethylether, methylene dic

Lavandula angustifolia essential oil attenuates chronic prostatitis by inhibiting PI3K/AKT and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Although lavandula angustifolia essential oil (LEO) has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, its mechanism in alleviating chronic prostatitis (CP) remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the pharmacological basis and molecular mechanisms of LEO's effect on CP. The chemical composition of LEO was analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), identifying 15 active ingredients. A carrageenan-induced rat CP model was used to evaluate the impact of LEO on prostate index, inflammatory markers, and histopathological changes. The results showed that LEO significantly reduced
