Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease widespread in the temperate zone. The definitive hosts of Toxoplasma gondii, which causes the disease, are cats. All warm-blooded vertebrates, including humans, can be intermediate hosts. A person is usually infected by ingesting oocysts, e.g. by consuming along with vegetables some contaminated soil, by drinking contaminated water, or by ingesting tissue cysts contained, for instance, in poorly cooked meat. Less common is congenital transmission or transmission via organ transplant from an infected donor. Recently, it has been suggested that toxoplasmosis

Damage to the intestinal epithelium reduces nutrient absorption and animal growth, and can have negative long-term health effects on livestock. Because the intestinotropic hormone glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) has been shown to contribute to gut integrity, reduce inflammation, and improve nutrient absorption, the present study was designed to determine whether administration of GLP-2 to calves with coccidiosis in the first month of life affects intestinal growth and mediates negative effects of the proinflammatory response. Holstein bull calves (n=19) were assigned to 4 treatment groups of 4

On two extensive sheep farms in southern Western Australia, 111 (Farm A) and 124 (Farm B) female crossbred lambs (2-6 weeks old) were randomly selected and individually identified using ear tags (a numbered tag and radio-frequency tag) at marking. On five separate occasions, faecal samples were collected and live weight, body condition score (BCS), faecal consistency score (FCS), breech fleece faecal soiling score and faecal dry matter percentage (DM%) were recorded. Lamb hot carcase weight (HCW) and dressing percentage were measured at slaughter. Faecal samples were screened by PCR for Crypto

A cluster-sampling, cross-sectional study was conducted for assessing the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in children less than 16 years of age from three villages, Dondian, Linshan, and Fuziyin, in rural Anhui in eastern China. Among 320 apparently healthy children less than 10 years of age from Dondian who had stool specimens collected, cryptosporidial oocysts were found in stools of three children from Dondian, and no positive specimens were found in 239 children studied from Linshan. In addition, a total of 610 serum samples from children in these three villages were tested for spe

Cryptosporidium parvum is a highly pathogenic zoonotic parasite with limited therapies. Current study explored the anti-C. parvum effect of Qing Chang Hua Shi Formula (QHF) and allicin in vitro in immunosuppressed mice. In vitro, QHF and allicin inhibited over 90% of C. parvum. In vivo, the 8-day treatment reduced fecal oocyst shedding to 12.88% of the model group. Infection disrupted intestinal homeostasis, reduced tight-junction protein expression, and downregulated NLRP6, while inducing systemic inflammation and elevating IL-18/IFN-γ levels, which were further increased by treatment. Coccidiosis is an intestinal parasitic disease that causes huge economic losses to the poultry industry globally. Eimeria tenella belonging to protozoon is the causative agent of cecal coccidiosis in chicken, and it causes enormous damage to poultry industry. The surface antigens (SAGs) of apicomplexan parasites have functions of attachment and invasion in host-parasite interaction. As a result of parasitic invasion, host immune response is triggered. However, the immunogenicity and potency of E. tenella surface antigen 6 and 15 (EtSAG 6 and 15), as vaccinal candidate antigen, remain largely u

Pet animals i.e. vertebrates from fish to mammals are often suspected to transmit germs of various systematic position (viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) to human beings. A critical analysis shows that only a very limited number of such organisms can be transmitted from animals to man. Zooanthroponoses with pet animal origin is a very rare phenomenon. Bacteria like salmonellae which were incriminated to be the cause of about 250,000 infections of man per year, particularly of children, in the USA in the early 70th have really no importance in the Federal Republic of Germany. The statisti

INTRODUCTION: Mycoplasma synoviae (M. synoviae) is an economically significant pathogen that causes respiratory infections, synovitis, and arthritis in chickens, inflicting substantial economic losses on the global poultry industry. Its frequent co-infection with other respiratory pathogens, often exacerbates the resultant pathogenic damage. As an important respiratory pathogen, it remains unclear whether Cryptosporidium baileyi (C. baileyi) can cause co-infection with M. synoviae in commercial large-scale poultry farms and what synergistic pathogenic pattern exists between them.

Gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) are among the most common pathogens that affect dogs globally, with some species representing a zoonotic threat. Stray and shelter dogs are especially vulnerable to parasitism as their clinical history is often unknown, and copro-parasitological analyses are seldom performed upon animal arrival at shelters. In Portugal, official shelters play a pivotal role in sheltering and managing stray dogs; however, little is known about the GIP infection status of these animals. This study thus aimed to determine the occurrence of GIP in dogs housed at official shelters i

Limited cross-immunity among Eimeria spp. presents a challenge for coccidiosis immunization. Identifying species-specific immunodominant antigens within Eimeria species is of crucial importance for the development of novel subunit vaccines. This study screened and identified specific antigen groups of Eimeria tenella using immunoproteomics and cross-immune protection assays. Initially, the merozoite antigens of E. tenella were isolated and analyzed using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE). Immunoproteomics was then utilized to identify species-specific immunodominant antigens of E. tenella.

Main objective of the present nationwide study was to assess the impact of the ESCCAP guideline for the control of worm infections in dogs and cats 8-10 years after its first publication in Germany. A secondary aim was to determine the prevalence of canine and feline cardiopulmonary nematodes and intestinal protozoa. Faecal samples of 53,693 dogs and 26,491 cats in 2004-2006 as well as of 129,578 dogs and 45,709 cats in 2015-2017 routinely submitted by veterinarians to a private veterinary laboratory were examined using appropriate parasitological methods. In dogs, the prevalence of Toxocara a

Cryptosporidium, a protozoan parasite in the phylum Apicomplexa, is the etiological agent of cryptosporidiosis, an intestinal infection characterized by profuse watery diarrhea. Over 30 species of Cryptosporidium are recognized, some host specific whereas others infect a broader host range. Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum are the species most commonly associated with human infection; C. hominis is largely associated only with human infections, but C. parvum is also associated with infection in animals, especially young ruminants. In some regions, cryptosporidiosis is a serio

Coccidiosis is caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria. These are intracellular parasites of enterocytes that rupture the host cell, causing lesions in the intestinal mucosa. The lesions caused by Eimeria reduce nutrient absorption capacity, negatively affecting productive gains in broilers, and representing a gateway for other enteropathogens. The objective of this study was to analyze the correlation between lesions caused by Eimeria and the prevalence of coccidiosis and other alterations found in the gastrointestinal tracts of broilers produced in Brazil from 2017 to 2018. Intestinal health

BACKGROUND: Artemisinin resistance observed in Southeast Asia threatens the continued use of artemisinin-based combination therapy in endemic countries. Additionally, the diversity of chemical mode of action in the global portfolio of marketed antimalarials is extremely limited. Addressing the urgent need for the development of new antimalarials, a chemical class of potent antimalarial compounds with a novel mode of action was recently identified. Herein, the preclinical characterization of one of these compounds, ACT-451840, conducted in partnership with academic and industrial groups is pres

An epidemiological cohort study of Cryptosporidium scophthalmi in cultured turbot Psetta maxima L. of Northwestern Spain was conducted along a four-year period. Four different ongrowing cohorts were monitored monthly from introduction into the ongrowing tanks (10-50 g) until reaching market size (400-1400 g). The association of host and environmental factors with five categories of parasite abundance was assessed using a multivariable regression framework. Epidemiological factors assessed here were water temperature, weight, length, month of collection, season, age, origin, condition factor, w

We have identified and characterized a Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) family member in the Lophotrochozoan invertebrate, Biomphalaria glabrata, the snail intermediate host of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. In mammals, MIF is a widely expressed pleiotropic cytokine with potent pro-inflammatory properties that controls cell functions such as gene expression, proliferation or apoptosis. Here we show that the MIF protein from B. glabrata (BgMIF) is expressed in circulating immune defense cells (hemocytes) of the snail as well as in the B. glabrata embryonic (Bge) cell lin

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria parasites impairs intestinal function and disrupts immune homeostasis in broilers, leading to substantial economic losses in poultry production. Paeoniflorin (PFN), a monoterpene glycoside with known anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, has not been extensively studied against avian coccidiosis. This study aimed to investigate whether dietary PFN could mitigate Eimeria-induced intestinal injury by modulating gut microbiota and macrophage polarization. A total of 288 one-day-old male Cobb 500 broilers were randomly assigned to 4 groups in a 2 × 2 fact

BACKGROUND: Changing climate and complexity in ecological landscape can potentially expand the geographic distribution of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) to adapt and transmit various vector-borne diseases, including malaria. Anopheles stephensi is a potential urban malaria vector in the Indian subcontinent. Temperature and nutrients are the important environmental stressors, which influence the life cycle and vectorial competence of mosquitoes.
METHODS: Three experimental setups were designed in the laboratory by exposing An. stephensi to low-temperature (LT) at 4 °C for eggs and 18 ± 1 °C f
