BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is essential for life. Part of the body's supply of vitamin D is ingested in food, but UV induced vitamin D synthesis in the body plays an even more important role. UV irradiation is a cause for the currently rising incidence of skin cancer in many countries; on the other hand, Vitamin D might be protective against some cancers. The 1987 and 1992 Cancer Control Supplements to the NHIS, along with other supplemental surveys administered intermittently on self-reported cancer-related behaviors, have contributed to important research and public health purposes. Patients belonging to xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) complementation group C comprise one-third of all XP patients. Only four major reports compiled larger groups of XP-C patients from southern Europe (12 pts), North America (16 pts) and Africa (14 and 56 pts) as well as their genetic background (46 XPC mutations). Herpes zoster, induced by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), is a unilaterally distributed vesicular rash that can cause multiple complications. VZV not only causes neurological problems, including postherpetic neuralgia and ocular zoster, but also causes inflammatory vasculopathy and increases the incidence of hemorrhagic or ischemic complications. Therefore, understanding the association between the development of herpes zoster and the subsequent occurrence of acute stroke or cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction and heart failure, is of great interest.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces inflammation in the skin specifically at the site of exposure. We unexpectedly found that UVB-induced inflammation was not induced in gp91phox-depleted mice. PURPOSE: To examine the influence of tan preference and skin type on sun protection behaviors of Australian adolescents.
METHODS: The Australian Secondary School Alcohol and Drug Questionnaires were conducted in 1993, 1996, 1999 and 2002 among randomly selected students aged 12--17. Schools were randomly selected from each education sector in each state.
