Effective Temporal Envelopes for Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation in the Absence of Auditory Peripheral Responses.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial ultrasound (US) stimulation (TUS) has emerged as a promising technique for minimally invasive, localized, deep brain stimulation. However, indirect auditory effects during neuromodulation require careful consideration, particularly in experiments with rodents. One method to prevent auditory responses involves applying tapered envelopes to US bursts. However, the specific mechanisms by which these envelopes affect both auditory and nonauditory responses remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between the temporal patterns of TUS and their ef

Music Is Quasi-Rhythmic Too: Comparing Bandwidth in Speech and Music Acoustic Modulation Spectra.

Speech and music both unfold over time. However, these dynamics are perceived quite differently: music as rhythmic, and speech as quasi-rhythmic. Here, we aim to identify whether this distinction between rhythm and quasi-rhythm is sourced from the raw acoustic waveform by analyzing the modulation spectrum of the acoustic envelope. We analyzed several large corpora on three scales: the coarsest scale containing recordings of each corpus, the intermediate scale of individual speakers/songs, and the finest scale of individual sentences or short musical segments. We confirm previous findings that

Therapy effect of cochleural alternating acoustic beam therapy versus traditional sound therapy for managing chronic idiopathic tinnitus patients.

Idiopathic tinnitus is a common and complex disorder with no established cure. The CAABT (Cochleural Alternating Acoustic Beam Therapy CAABT), is a personalized sound therapy designed to target specific tinnitus frequencies and effectively intervene in tinnitus according to clinical tinnitus assessment. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the CAABT and Traditional Sound Therapy (TST) in managing chronic idiopathic tinnitus. This was a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, single-center prospective study. Sixty adult patients with tinnitus were recruited and randomly assigned t

Changes in Heart Rate Variability Following Acoustic Therapy in Individuals With Tinnitus.

Purpose The aim of the study was to investigate changes in autonomic function, as measured by heart rate variability, in individuals with tinnitus following acoustic therapy implemented using tinnitus maskers presented via hearing aids. Method Twenty-six individuals with tinnitus and hearing impairment completed an 8-week field trial wearing hearing aids providing acoustic therapy via three tinnitus masker options set just below minimum masking level. Tinnitus handicap was measured using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory at baseline (before starting acoustic therapy) and posttreatment (at end of

The Role of the Clinically Obtained Acoustic Reflex as a Research Tool for Subclinical Hearing Pathologies.

The acoustic reflex (AR) shows promise as an objective test for the presence of cochlear synaptopathy in rodents. The AR has also been shown to be reduced in humans with tinnitus compared to those without. The aim of the present study was twofold: (a) to determine if AR strength (quantified as both threshold and growth) varied with lifetime noise exposure, and thus provided an estimate of the degree of synaptopathy and (b) to identify which factors should be considered when using the AR as a quantitative measure rather than just present/absent responses. AR thresholds and growth functions were

Impedance and admittance tympanometry. I. Experimental approach.

In this experimental study a procedure is developed which enables the conversion of susceptance and conductane tympanograms to reactance and resistance tympanograms. Special attention was given to the subtraction of the ear canal admittance. The procedure was applied to bell-shaped and W-notched susceptance and conductance tympanograms. Computed reactance curves showed always an inverted-V shape, computed resistance curves were always flat.

An in vitro model for acoustic overstimulation.

Although many studies have been performed on the effects of acoustic overstimulation on the inner ear, our knowledge about the cellular processes underlying reduced hearing sensitivity and auditory cell death is still limited. In order to further our understanding of cellular processes occurring in conjunction with acoustic trauma, we designed an in vitro model to study the effects of overstimulation directly on sensory hair cells isolated from the low-frequency part of the guinea pig cochlea. The isolated outer hair cells were subjected to pressure jets delivered by a glass micropipette posit

An acoustically evoked short latency negative response in profound hearing loss infants.

OBJECTIVE: A large negative deflection with a 3-4 ms latency within the auditory brainstem response has been reported in some profound hearing loss ears under intense stimuli in adult subjects. The wave has been termed the N3 potential or acoustically evoked short latency negative response and it is assumed to be a vestibular-evoked potential. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and the acoustically evoked short latency negative response in infants with a functionless cochlea and normal or impaired semicircular

Temporary and permanent threshold shift: an overview.

Temporary threshold shift (TTS) as well as permanent threshold shift (PTS) represent the most common hearing effect of acute and chronic high level acoustic stimulation. TTS is typically related to the traumatizing stimulus spectrum and to the exposure level and duration. The stapedial acoustic reflex as well as the repetition rate of the exposure may influence TTS. PTS is related to a number of factors including exposure duration, subject's age, exposure to other ototoxic factors, presence of impulse noise components, etc. PTS is usually accompanied with alterations of several cochlear functi

Transformation of acoustic information to sensory decision variables in the parietal cortex.

The process by which sensory evidence contributes to perceptual choices requires an understanding of its transformation into decision variables. Here, we address this issue by evaluating the neural representation of acoustic information in the auditory cortex-recipient parietal cortex, while gerbils either performed a two-alternative forced-choice auditory discrimination task or while they passively listened to identical acoustic stimuli. During task engagement, stimulus identity decoding performance from simultaneously recorded parietal neurons significantly correlated with psychometric sensi

Perceptual learning of random acoustic patterns: Impact of temporal regularity and attention.

Perceptual learning is a powerful mechanism to enhance perceptual abilities and to form robust memory representations of previously unfamiliar sounds. Memory formation through repeated exposure takes place even for random and complex acoustic patterns devoid of semantic content. The current study sought to scrutinise how perceptual learning of random acoustic patterns is shaped by two potential modulators: temporal regularity of pattern repetition and listeners' attention. To this end, we adapted an established implicit learning paradigm and presented short acoustic sequences that could contai

Unilateral Acoustic Degradation Delays Attentional Separation of Competing Speech.

Hearing loss is often asymmetric such that hearing thresholds differ substantially between the two ears. The extreme case of such asymmetric hearing is single-sided deafness. A unilateral cochlear implant (CI) on the more severely impaired ear is an effective treatment to restore hearing. The interactive effects of unilateral acoustic degradation and spatial attention to one sound source in multitalker situations are at present unclear. Here, we simulated some features of listening with a unilateral CI in young, normal-hearing listeners (N = 22) who were presented with 8-band noise-vocoded spe

Perceptual Dimensions Underlying Tinnitus-Like Sounds.

Purpose The goal of this study was to establish the perceptual underpinnings of the terms that are commonly used by patients when describing the quality of their tinnitus. Method Using a free-classification method, 15 subjects with normal hearing placed 60 different tinnitus-like sounds into similarity clusters on a grid. Multidimensional scaling, hierarchical clustering, and acoustic analyses were used to determine the acoustic underpinnings of the perceptual dimensions and perceptual similarity. Results Multidimensional scaling revealed three different perceptual dimensions (pitch, modulatio

Modeling synchronization and suppression of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions using Van der Pol oscillators: effects of aspirin administration.

Many of the aspects of the interaction of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions with external tones (suppression and synchronization) can be qualitatively simulated by the behavior of a single driven Van der Pol oscillator. Analytical and numerical investigations of a model of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions based on such an oscillator (with appropriate parametric changes in the nonlinear and negative damping components) lead to predictions of the nature of the changes in suppression and synchronization (frequency-locking) tuning curves when the levels of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions are mo

[Effects of diazepam on stapedius reflex: physiological research].

The effect of diazepam (10 mg i.m. X 7 days) on crossed and uncrossed acoustic stapedius reflex parameters (threshold, amplitude and duration) has been studied in 7 normal hearing subjects. The results showed that diazepam has a not clinically significant damping effect on the threshold, the amplitude and, very often, the duration of both ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic stapedius reflexes.

Transient facial nerve palsy after topical papaverine application during vestibular schwannoma surgery. Case report.

Some evidence in the literature supports the topical application of papaverine to the cochlear nerve to prevent internal auditory artery vasospasm and cochlear ischemia as a method of enhancing the ability to preserve hearing during acoustic neuroma surgery. The authors report a case of transient facial nerve palsy that occurred after papaverine was topically applied during a hearing preservation acoustic neuroma removal. A 58-year-old woman presented with tinnitus and serviceable sensorineural hearing loss in her right ear (speech reception threshold 15 dB, speech discrimination score 100%).
