Assessing the Anatomical Accuracy of AI-Generated Medical Illustrations: A Comparative Study of Text-to-Image Generator Tools in Anatomy Education.

Historically, human anatomy education has been an essential part of medical training, depending on cadaveric dissection and anatomical representations. However, financial and ethical limitations have resulted in a decline in conventional teaching techniques, necessitating the investigation of alternative resources such as digital drawings and artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of this research was to assess and compare the anatomical precision of graphics produced by four AI text-to-image generators: Microsoft Bing, DeepAI, Freepik, and Gemini, emphasizing their value in medical education.

Sternalis or rectus? An analysis of terminological usage based on case reports of the sternalis muscle.

The sternalis muscle is a relatively rare anatomical variant that lies superficial to the pectoralis major muscle. In English-language literature, it is commonly referred as "sternalis muscle" or "rectus sternalis." Although the second edition of the Terminologia Anatomica (TA) officially designates "sternalis muscle" as the standard term, terminological inconsistencies persist. This study investigated the actual usage of these terms based on a literature review of previously published case reports. We analyzed 77 articles comprising 92 cases, retrieved through PubMed and Google Scholar, exami

Vascular Labeling of Extracranial Head and Neck Vessels Using Silicone Dye Injection: An Effective Method for Cadaver-Based Facial Surgery Training.

Background  Silicone dye injection is a well-described technique for studying vascular anatomy. Plastic surgeons routinely participate in cadaveric workshops and are involved in the preparation of vascular-labeled cadavers. However, sparse literature is available on dye studies of extracranial head and neck vessels, even with anatomists, and the preparation of these cadavers is a daunting task. Materials and Methods  In this study, we describe a straightforward technique of silicone dye injection for extracranial head and neck vasculature and its application for filler injection training and o

Urethral Injury in Rectal Cancer Surgery: A Comprehensive Study Using Cadaveric Dissection, Imaging Analyses, and Clinical Series.

Male urethral injury during rectal cancer surgery is rare but significant. Scant information is available about the distances between the rectourethral space and neighboring structures. The aim of this study is to describe the anatomical relations of the male urethra. This three-pronged study included cadaveric dissection, retrospective MRI analysis, and clinical cases. Measurements included the R-Mu distance (shortest distance between the rectum and the membranous urethra), R-Am distance (distance from the anterior rectal wall to anal margin nearest to the membranous urethra), and the anal ca

The Long Path to Our Current Understanding Regarding Care of Children with Differences/Disorders of Sexual Development.

Testes were associated with maleness from antiquity, and ancient societies had fanciful myths about the origins of the sexes and about fetal sexual development. 17th century anatomists developed the concept that mammals developed from eggs and discovered sperm in semen; in 1878, Hertwig observed sperm entering eggs (of sea urchins), establishing the cellular basis of sex development. Individuals with atypical genitalia were known clinically in the 17th century, with much debate about their origins, but by the late 19th century it was generally accepted that gonads determined sex, and that sex

Variations in the Morphology of Foramen Lacerum.

Greater petrosal and deep petrosal nerves unite in foramen lacerum to form vidian nerve which innervate lacrimal, buccal, nasopharynx, and nasal glands. Moreover, the superior part of this foramen transmits lacerum part of internal carotid artery which irrigates major part of brain. Change in the morphology of foramen lacerum may result in compression of neurovascular structures creating neurovascular complications which at times may be fatal/morbid. In addition to this, there is paucity of literature elucidating the morphology of foramen lacerum. So, the aim of the study is to describe the mo

Defining the anatomy of the neonatal lingual frenulum.

The lingual frenulum is recognized as having the potential to limit tongue mobility, which may lead to difficulties with breastfeeding in some infants. There is extensive variation between individuals in the appearance of the lingual frenulum but an ambiguous relationship between frenulum appearance and functional limitation. An increasing number of infants are being diagnosed with ankyloglossia, with growing uncertainty regarding what can be considered "normal" lingual frenulum anatomy. In this study, microdissection of four fresh tissue premature infant cadavers shows that the lingual frenul

Computerized anatomy of the distal radius and its relevance to volar plating, research, and teaching.

Distal radius fractures are common and fracture patterns and fixation can be complex. Computerized anatomy evaluation (CAE) might offer non-invasive and enhanced anatomy assessment that might help with implant selection and placement and screw length determination. Our goal was to test the accuracy of two CAE methods for anatomical volar plate positioning and screw lengths measurement of the distal radius. We included 56 high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans of intact, human distal radii. Plates were placed manually onto 3D printed models (method 1), which was compa

Application of flipped classroom pedagogy to the human gross anatomy laboratory: Student preferences and learning outcomes.

To improve student preparedness for anatomy laboratory dissection, the dental gross anatomy laboratory was transformed using flipped classroom pedagogy. Instead of spending class time explaining the procedures and anatomical structures for each laboratory, students were provided online materials to prepare for laboratory on their own. Eliminating in-class preparation provided the opportunity to end each period with integrative group activities that connected laboratory and lecture material and explored clinical correlations. Materials provided for prelaboratory preparation included: custom-mad

Cognitive load imposed by ultrasound-facilitated teaching does not adversely affect gross anatomy learning outcomes.

Ultrasonography is increasingly used in medical education, but its impact on learning outcomes is unclear. Adding ultrasound may facilitate learning, but may also potentially overwhelm novice learners. Based upon the framework of cognitive load theory, this study seeks to evaluate the relationship between cognitive load associated with using ultrasound and learning outcomes. The use of ultrasound was hypothesized to facilitate learning in anatomy for 161 novice first-year medical students. Using linear regression analyses, the relationship between reported cognitive load on using ultrasound an

Optimizing the use of cadavers by integrating pathology during anatomy dissection.

An accurate knowledge of anatomy, especially natural variation within individuals, is of vital clinical importance. Cadaver dissection during anatomical training may be a valuable introduction to pathology for undergraduate students, which can contribute greatly to a successful medical career. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent and type of pathology lesions in a cadaver population (n = 127) used for medical dissection. This was done to gauge whether sufficient pathology lesions representative of all the organ systems were present in the cadaver population to warrant the use

The deep winding at the brain surface: replicating a historical report associating the 'bridged' central sulcus with the pli de passage fronto-pariétal moyen.

In 1876, the anatomist Heschl surveyed 1,087 brains identifying six cases of a unilateral ‘bridged’ central sulcus (CS) at the brain surface. He also measured the height of a minor ‘deep winding’ at the same location within the CS in the remaining 1,081 brains, reporting a distribution skewed towards significantly increased heights. These observations supported his hypothesis that the ‘bridged’ CS represents an extreme form of the ‘deep winding’ within the CS. In this replication we examined structural MRI data from an equally large dataset of 1,112 participants of the Human Connectome Project
