INTRODUCTION: Arecanut chewing is common in many parts of South and Southeast Asia, but its effects on young people are often ignored. Many adolescents start this habit early, which is concerning because it is linked to early development of Oral Submucous Fibrosis-a condition that can cause serious problems and may progress to cancer.
CONTENT: A structured review was done using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar, including English studies from 2000 to 2025. Studies were included if they reported arecanut use in adolescents, focusing on age of initiation and oral fibrotic changes. Stud

BACKGROUND: Betel leaf chewing habit has been studied extensively, as it has been an ancient practice in many Asian countries. Although betel leaf has been reported to have potential beneficial properties, it has also been shown to have a strong association with oral diseases, including periodontitis. This case series addresses the presentation of periodontitis among betel quid users, to help clinicians identify and manage such patients when they are encountered in settings outside the countries and territories where betel quid use is common.
METHODS: Four patients of Asian ethnicity were ref

Betel quid (BQ) is commonly used in the Asia-Pacific region. Disulfiram is prescribed for people with alcohol use disorders (PwAUDs) after the completion of detoxification as an alternative to rehabilitation. This prospective observational study reported the aversive reactions and common symptoms of disulfiram and BQ in PwAUDs. Participants included PwAUDs admitted to the psychiatric ward at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital for detoxification, who were on Disulfiram and using BQ at the same time. Aversive reactions between disulfiram and BQ were observed for 100 patients ov

BACKGROUND: OSMF is chronic underlying disease. The disease is well recognized and had an importance due to high malignant transformation rate. Multiple etiological factors are found responsible in the pathogenesis of the disease course. The effect of areca-nut is mainly causing trismus of the oral cavity. This may compromise the food intake of the patients who are facing this precancerous disease.
METHODS: Total one hundred and 28 patients were selected and equally distributed into two groups. It is an observational, cross- sectional study. Sixty four patient with OSMF were selected on the b

Oral Sub-mucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, potentially malignant disorder linked to areca nut chewing. Multiple therapies have been tried, but no consensus exists on the most effective approach. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and physiotherapy in managing OSMF. Patients with OSMF were randomly assigned to receive either micronutrient supplementation (Group A) or structured physiotherapy (Group B). Outcomes assessed included mouth opening and burning sensation at baseline and follow-up. Both groups showed symptomatic im

Betel is a kind of substance for chewing, that is made from piper betle, areca nuts and other, additional constituents. It is the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world, right after caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. It is particularly famous in Asia. Betel chewing induces euphoria and it is addictive. Similarly like in other substances such as nicotine or alcohol, betel also has detrimental effects. It causes e.g. oral cancer and cancer of the oesophagus, it contributes to the development of metabolic syndrome, liver cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease. There are also positive

Our aim was to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of various epidemiological, social, behavioural, and dietary risk factors for oral submucous fibrosis in a population-based case control study. We did this in rural and urban Lucknow by organising oral health camps in the community, where a total of 3136 subjects were enrolled. Panmasala, a dry commercial preparation containing areca nut, slaked lime, catechu, and condiments, with or without tobacco, was the most important aetiological factor for the disease. The 95% confidence interval (CI) of the OR for tobaccoless panmasala ranged from 4.77 to 6.

Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a disorder that occurs primarily due to the usage of betel nut and paan masala. The rate of malignant transformation from OSMF is 26 %. There are several markers to predict this malignant transformation such as inflammatory mediators, hypoxia, Cell cycle alteration, alteration in oncosuppressor genes, angiogenesis-related molecules, genetic susceptibility, and senescence. In carcinogenesis, multiple mutations occur leading to genetic damage. This affects the normal cell cycle and DNA repair. One of the reasons for the genetic damage and mutation to result is b

Worldwide estimates of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) show a confinement to Indians and Southeast Asians. In India, the prevalence of OSMF has increased over the past four decades from 0.03% to 6.42%. The condition is well recognized for its malignant potential rate of 7-30%. The condition has a multifactorial etiology and may remain either stationary or become severe, leaving an individual physically challenged both physically and psychologically. Hence, the study aims at reviewing studies done on various etiological factors leading to its onset. Their analysis may serve as an adjunct in defi

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is prevalent mostly in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. Chewing betel nuts and betel leaves, with or without tobacco, has been associated with OSF. Betel quid contents including guvacine, arecoline, guvacoline, arecaidine, and chavibetol are considered to play an important part in the occurrence of OSF. Transformation of OSF to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is variable, but up to 13% conversion of OSF to SCC has been reported. Various genetic and molecular mechanisms impact the malignant transformation of OSF, causing changes in the cell cy

On the Chinese mainland, betel quid (BQ) chewing is common in the Hunan and Hainan provinces. The BQ chewing habit in Hunan consists of dried husks and betel nuts, which are sold as industrially packaged, areca nut-based products. In Hainan, the fresh nut is chewed. Tobacco is not added. Reported prevalence of BQ chewing in Hunan province is high (64.5-82.7%). Oral diseases associated with BQ chewing are oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), oral leukoplakia (OL) and oral cancer. Reported prevalence of OSF among BQ chewers ranges from 0.9% to 4.7%. People most commonly affected are between the ages o
