OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Prevention of obesity in childhood is considered one of the main areas of primary prevention of non-infectious diseases. The aim: determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among school-age children, and analyze the risk of developing concomitant excess body weight and obesity.

Biliary strictures (BS), a major complication after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), cause morbidity, mortality, graft loss, and increased costs. The virtually unchanged incidence of BS (approximately 10%-25%) suggests that they are not simply "technical" in origin, but probably represent a mucosa ischemic injury inherent in the transplantation procedure. The incidence of acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) is increasing and associated mortality is high. Biliary stasis and sludge formation are probably important factors in the pathogenesis of this disease. No data concerning the dynamics of these changes in the early phase of intensive care therapy are available. The gallbladders of 20 patients treated after major abdominal surgery in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) with mechanical ventilation and without enteral feedings were therefore observed sonographically during the first 5 postoperative days in a prospective observational study.
