Alcohol's effect on body temperature: hypothermia, hyperthermia or poikilothermia?

A series of five experiments was undertaken in order to characterize the pharmacological effects of alcohol on the body temperature of the unrestrained rat. After a thermistor probe was fixed within the colon of each animal and its body temperature had stabilized, physiological saline. 2.0 g/kg or 4.0 g/kg of ethyl alcohol was given by intragastric gavage. A constant concentration of 20% was utilized with doses determined volumetrically according to the individual weight of the animal. The following observations were made: (1) At a laboratory room temperature of 22 degrees C, alcohol produced

Norepinephrine thermogenesis in seasonally acclimatized and cold acclimated red-backed voles in Alaska.

The calorigenic response (millilitres O2 per gram pre hour) to injected norepinephrine (NE) was compared as an index of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) in the following groups of the Alaska red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus): (1) summer, (2) fall acclimatized, (3) winter acclimatized, (4) 20 degrees C acclimated and (5) 5 degrees C acclimated. The metabolic response was tested at thermoneutrality (25 degrees C) and during cold exposure (5 degrees C). Winter acclimatized voles showed a significantly greater metabolic response to NE than summer voles at both 25 degrees C and 5 degrees C. I

Early experience facilitates the development of temperature regulation in the cat.

Thirty kittens were given a 30-min exposure to a moderately cool environment and drop in body temperature was measured. One group was tested every day from age 2 days to 21 days of age. A 2nd group was tested on Days 6-21 and a 3rd group tested only at 19 days of age. The 1st group (tested on Days 2-21) became homeothermic at an earlier age than did the other groups. The data are interpreted to indicate that early exposure to cool temperatures facilitates acquisition of temperature regulation in the cat, and that observed deficits in passive avoidance learning in young cats are not due to incr

Influence of Temperature, Humidity, Personal Hygiene, and Clothing on the Ozonolysis of Skin Oil at the Skin's Surface: Self Regulation.

Reactions between skin oil and ozone are a substantial source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the human body, yet factors influencing these reactions and emissions have only recently begun to be investigated. In this study, we conducted single-person chamber experiments involving three volunteers to systematically assess the influence of various factors, including temperature, relative humidity (RH), personal hygiene (bathing frequency and clothing soiling), and clothing coverage. We found that chamber air temperature and RH, within the range of 22-31 °C and 40-70% respective

A meta-analysis of the effects of Baduanjin training on the human body temperature based on infrared thermography technology.

BACKGROUND: Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise, is widely practiced to improve overall health in both elderly individuals and a growing number of young enthusiasts. Appropriate thermoregulation has been proposed as a potential physiological mechanism underlying the multiple health benefits of Baduanjin. Infrared thermography is a noninvasive functional imaging technique that provides a visual and noninvasive means of reflecting local metabolic activity and blood perfusion. However, comprehensive evidence regarding the effect of Baduanjin training on human body temperature, an

Electric fan-based cooling strategies to mitigate heat strain during prolonged heat exposure in young males.

Prolonged exposure to hot-humid environments can elevate core temperature and induce severe cardiovascular strain, potentially triggering an inflammatory response. Electric fan use and cold water consumption are common cooling strategies to reduce core temperature, but it remains unclear whether combining these two can effectively alleviate heat strain during daylong exposure. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combining fan use with cold drink or ice slurry intake in mitigating physiological responses and thermal perceptions during 8 h of heat exposure (36.5 °C, 57 % RH). Effect of electric fan use in isolation or combined with ice slurry/cold water ingestion and lower-leg immersion in young men during intermittent physical activity in hot-humid conditions.

Using a randomized crossover protocol, 10 young men completed four 180 min exposures (38 °C, 60% relative humidity), alternating between 30 min of walking and 30 min of sitting where fluid or ice slurry were served. Participants underwent four trials: (i) 5 mL·kg body mass-1 of 20 °C water (CON); (ii) 5 mL·kg body mass-1 of 20 °C water + fan at 4 m·s-1 (FAN); (iii) fan + 3 mL·kg body mass-1 of ice slurry + 2 mL·kg body mass-1 of 4 °C water (FAN + ISCW); and (iv) FAN + ISCW + lower-leg immersion in 20 °C water (FAN + ISCW + LLI). Sweat and body mass losses were higher with FAN than CON, FAN + I

Cooling strategies improve intermittent sprint performance in the heat of athletes with tetraplegia.

BACKGROUND: Precooling has been shown to enhance performance in repeated sprint exercise in able-bodied subjects in a hot environment. Spinal cord injury causes thermoregulatory impairment with a detrimental effect on performance. This study assessed whether cooling strategies before and during exercise in the heat enhances sprint performance in athletes with tetraplegia. METHODS: Eight male athletes with tetraplegia performed intermittent arm crank exercise in the heat (32.0 degrees C (0.1 degrees C); humidity, 50% (0.1%)) for a maximum of 60 min or until exhaustion. Trials involved a no-coo

The circadian rhythm of core temperature: origin and some implications for exercise performance.

This review first examines reliable and convenient ways of measuring core temperature for studying the circadian rhythm, concluding that measurements of rectal and gut temperature fulfil these requirements, but that insulated axilla temperature does not. The origin of the circadian rhythm of core temperature is mainly due to circadian changes in the rate of loss of heat through the extremities, mediated by vasodilatation of the cutaneous vasculature. Difficulties arise when the rhythm of core temperature is used as a marker of the body clock, since it is also affected by the sleep-wake cycle.

The effect of alcohol consumption on human physiological and perceptual responses to heat stress: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) consumption is ostensibly known to increase the risk of morbidity and mortality during hot weather and heatwaves. However, how alcohol independently alters physiological, perceptual, and behavioral responses to heat stress remains poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a systematic scoping review to understand how alcohol consumption affects thermoregulatory responses to the heat. METHODS: We searched five databases employing the following eligibility criteria, studies must have: 1) involved the oral consumption of ethanol, 2) employed a randomized or c

Intense nocturnal warming alters growth strategies, colouration and parasite load in a diurnal lizard.

In the past decades, nocturnal temperatures have been playing a disproportionate role in the global warming of the planet. Yet, they remain a neglected factor in studies assessing the impact of global warming on natural populations. Here, we question whether an intense augmentation of nocturnal temperatures is beneficial or deleterious to ectotherms. Physiological performance is influenced by thermal conditions in ectotherms and an increase in temperature by only 2°C is sufficient to induce a disproportionate increase in metabolic expenditure. Warmer nights may expand ectotherms' species therm

Energetics of thermoregulation by an industrious endotherm.

OBJECTIVES: Thermoregulation by modern industrial humans is unique among endothermic animals, in that it is largely accomplished by controlling the temperature of our external environment. The objective of this study was to view the relationship between thermoregulatory energy use and environmental temperature in modern humans from the perspective of comparative physiology. METHODS: Monthly residential energy use estimates from the US Energy Information Administration were divided by the annual number of American households from the US Census Bureau, giving average monthly energy consumption

Regional heat loss in resting man during immersion in 25.2 degrees C water.

Five male subjects having a wide range of relative body fat, 9.2-20.2%, were studied during total body immersion in water at 25.2 degrees C. The regional surface area of each subject was calculated from anthropometric data utilizing a segmental geometric model. Skin temperatures (Tsk) and regional skin heat loss were measured prior to and during 30 min immersion at 13 sites. During immersion, mean Tsk was 25.9 degrees C and remained significantly higher than the water temperature. A measurable temperature gradient for heat flow was observed from all body segments. Segimental temperature in wat

[Course of bacterial infections in high-dose therapy with clozapine].

The influence of neuroleptic drugs on body temperature regulation is well established. Even with atypical neuroleptic drugs such as clozapine, hyperthermia has been observed as well as the malignant neuroleptic syndrome. It is likely that the influence of clozapine affects the immune response. A case is reported in which afebrile angina tonsillaris and endocarditis developed, as a result of high-dosage therapy with clozapine over several years. Besides the special features of the course, differential diagnosis, therapy and possible influence on the body temperature and the immune response are

Effects of warm and cool thermal conditions on ventilatory responses to hyperoxic test in neonates.

Body temperature interacts with respiratory control, but it is unclear what sites or mechanisms mediate those interactions. We hypothesized that warm and cool thermal conditions affect the decrease in ventilation (VE) seen during the hyperoxic test (HT), a breathing response believed to reflect the strength of the peripheral chemoreceptor drive. A breath-by-breath analysis during a 30 s HT was performed in eight premature neonates (postconceptional age: 36 +/- 1 weeks) under neutral, warm, and cool thermal conditions. Quiet sleep (QS) and active sleep (AS) were scored by neurophysiological cri

Accidental hypothermia.

Accidental hypothermia is an unintentional drop in core body temperature below 35 °C. It can occur at any time of year and in any climate, and can affect all age groups. The epidemiology of accidental hypothermia reflects the interaction between biological susceptibility, social conditions and exposure to environmental factors. As core temperature falls and thermoregulation mechanisms become insufficient, the metabolism slows, consciousness deteriorates and the hypothermic myocardium becomes increasingly prone to arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. The prognosis is variable, and treatment outcomes

Menstrual cycle effects on thermoregulation while exercising in the heat.

Women may be challenged to maintain thermoregulation due to hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the menstrual cycle phase on core temperature, hydration status, and perceived exertion while exercising under uncompensable heat gain. Eleven eumenorrheic women (24.4 ± 1.1 yrs, 65.7 ± 2.4 kg, 22.7 ± 1.5% body fat) walked for two 180-min trials in a heat chamber (35 °C and 30% relative humidity) during early-follicular (EF) and mid-luteal (ML) phases. Subjects completed three intervals of 50 min of exercise at 50% VO2max. Physi
