Food intake and nutritional status during EXEMSI. Experimental Campaign for the European Manned Space Infrastructure.

Modifications of food intake by astronauts during long-duration spaceflights have been observed. Various psychological stress factors, such as isolation, confinement, constrained community and boredom, are thought to play a role in this phenomenon. For this reason it was decided to include a nutritional investigation in the EXEMSI simulation study, in which four crew members (1 female and 3 males) were isolated and confined for 60 days in a space station-like environment. The Food and Nutritional Management System, developed for this experiment, provided on-line analysis of all available foods

On Your Mark, Get Set, Choose! A Randomized Cross-Over Study Comparing Fixed and Self-Selected Rest Periods in Interval Running Among Professional Female Soccer Players.

BACKGROUND: Studies on rest durations during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) often compare fixed and self-selected (SS) rest allocation approaches. Frequently, the rest duration under SS conditions is unlimited, leading to inconsistent total rest durations compared to fixed rest conditions. To address this limitation, we recently compared fixed and SS rest conditions during cycling HIIT sessions, while keeping the total rest duration equivalent. However, our protocol required athletes to divide a long total rest duration (720 s) across nine intervals, which may have been overly cogniti

How has the COVID-19 epidemic affected the risk behaviors of people who inject drugs in a city with high harm reduction service coverage in Vietnam? A qualitative investigation.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 outbreak disproportionally affects vulnerable populations including people who inject drugs (PWID). Social distancing and stay-at-home orders might result in a lack of access to medical and social services, poorer mental health, and financial precariousness, and thus, increases in HIV and HCV risk behaviors. This article explores how the HIV/HCV risk behaviors of PWID in Haiphong, a city with high harm reduction service coverage in Vietnam, changed during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and what shaped such changes, using the risk environment framework. [CONFAMI study: Effects of home confinement during the COVID-19 epidemic on the lives of children and their families].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to understand the changes within families during confinement motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore the psycho-emotional experiences of children and their parents in this new situation. Confinement necessarily induced significant changes in daily family routines, particularly for work, education, leisure and social activities. In the more vulnerable pediatric population, several authors have warned of the need to consider the impact of lockdown measures during COVID-19 on the psychological impact and well-being. METHOD: This is an anonymous onli

A qualitative study of methamphetamine initiation in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite a significant rise in methamphetamine use in low- and middle-income countries, there has been little empirical examination of the factors that contribute to individuals' initiation of methamphetamine use in these settings. The goal of this study was to qualitatively examine factors associated with methamphetamine initiation in South Africa. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 active methamphetamine users (13 women and 17 men) in Cape Town, South Africa. Interviews included narrative descriptions of the circumstances surrounding methamphetamine initiation. I

Effects of game interactivity on perceived emotional challenge, mixed-affect emotional experiences and physiological responses.

INTRODUCTION: As game genres have evolved, digital games have introduced a distinct type of user experience known as perceived emotional challenge, emerging from the integration of emotionally compelling narratives and interactive elements. While existing research has explored emotional challenge, the specific role of game interactivity in shaping this experience remains unclear, particularly regarding whether it amplifies subjective perceptions, mixed-affect emotional responses, and multimodal physiological reactions. METHODS: A between-subjects experiment was conducted in which 28 participa

Artificial intelligence tools for engagement prediction in neuromotor disorder patients during rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Robot-Assisted Gait Rehabilitation (RAGR) is an established clinical practice to encourage neuroplasticity in patients with neuromotor disorders. Nevertheless, tasks repetition imposed by robots may induce boredom, affecting clinical outcomes. Thus, quantitative assessment of engagement towards rehabilitation using physiological data and subjective evaluations is increasingly becoming vital. This study aimed at methodologically exploring the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms applied to structured datasets made of heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal a

"Everything is kind of the same except my mind is with me": exploring cannabis substitution in a sample of adults in early recovery from an opioid or stimulant addiction.

BACKGROUND: Recovery from addiction is frequently equated with abstinence. However, some individuals who resolve an addiction continue to use substances, including via substitution (i.e., increased use of one substance after eliminating/ reducing another). Substitution may play a distinct role during early recovery (≤ 1 year), as this period is marked by dramatic change and adjustment. Cannabis is one of the most used substances and is legal for medical and recreational use in an increasing number of states. Consequently, cannabis an increasingly accessible substitute for substances, like fent

Cannabis use in the UK: a quantitative comparison of individual differences in medical and recreational cannabis users.

There is a paucity of research, especially in the UK, that investigates individual differences in both medical and recreational cannabis users. A cross-sectional survey study design was used to assess recreational cannabis users and medical cannabis users currently living in the UK. Recreational cannabis users were invited to take part via social media. Medical cannabis users were recruited from Sapphire Medical Clinics, London, UK, which provides treatment with prescribed cannabis-based medicinal products. Demographic data and cannabis use frequency, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder

Using fatherhood to engage men in HIV services via maternal, neonatal and child health entry points in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, uptake of HIV services remains lower amongst men compared to women, resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. Several factors contribute to this situation, including stigma, confidentiality concerns, inconvenient clinic operating hours, fear of an HIV-positive test result, and long-waiting times. Additionally, women living with HIV are frequently identified whilst accessing other routine services, particularly antenatal and well-baby care. Novel approaches and strategies are needed to increase men's routine utilization of health services. For many men, fatherhood is

Impact of COVID-19 on health-related behaviours, well-being and weight management.

BACKGROUND: Weight management is complex for people even in times of stability. Supporting individuals to develop strategies to maintain a healthier weight when there are additional life challenges may prevent relapse. This mixed-methods study describes the impact the COVID-19 restrictions had on adults engaged in weight management before and during the pandemic in order to determine helpful strategies. METHODS: Longitudinal data was captured from online surveys completed by Slimming World (SW) members 0-4 weeks after joining, October/November 2019, providing pre-joining and baseline (T0&T1),

Are Drinking Motives Universal? Characteristics of Motive Types in Alcohol-Dependent Men from Two Diverse Populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since alcohol use disorders are among the most prevalent and destructive mental disorders, it is critical to address factors contributing to their development and maintenance. Drinking motives are relevant driving factors for consumption. Identifying groups of drinkers with similar motivations may help to specialize intervention components and make treatment more effective and efficient. We aimed to identify and describe distinct motive types of drinkers in dependent males from two diverse cultures (Uganda and Germany) and to explore potential differences and similarities
