Music Therapy Modulates Abnormal Brain Networks and Alleviates Anxiety Symptoms in University Students: An fNIRS Study.

Anxiety's prevalence is increasing, making it a widespread mental health concern. However, scale-based diagnostic methods have limitations. Music therapy helps regulate emotions and alleviate anxiety symptoms. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a novel approach to diagnosing mental disorders by measuring changes in the concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HbR) in the superficial layers of the brain, thereby reflecting brain activation. This is the first study to use fNIRS to examine the impact of music therapy on anxiety. fNIRS was used t

Shifting of global aphasia to Wernicke's aphasia in a patient with intact motor function: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Global aphasia without hemiparesis (GAWH) is a rare stroke syndrome characterized by the dissociation of motor and language functions. Here, we present a case of GAWH with the patient later regaining speech fluency. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department immediately after an episode of syncope. On arrival, we noted his global aphasia but without any focal neurologic signs. Computed tomography (CT) perfusion scans showed a large hypodense region over his left perisylvian area. Under the impression of acute ischaemic stroke, he received recombi

Cerebral localization of impaired phonological retrieval during rhyme judgment.

OBJECTIVE: Computation of a prearticulatory phonological representation (phonological access, or phonological retrieval) is an essential process in speech production whose neural localization is not clear. This study combined a specific behavioral measure of phonological access and multivariate voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) in a series of left hemisphere stroke patients to identify brain regions critical for this process. METHODS: Phonological access was assessed in 40 chronic ischemic stroke patients using a silent rhyming task to avoid confounds with motor planning and articulat

Progress in the last decade in our understanding of primary progressive aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a focal neurodegeneration of the brain affecting the language network. Patients can have isolated language impairment for years without impairment in other areas. PPA is classified as primary progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), semantic dementia (SD), and logopenic aphasia, which have distinct patterns of atrophy on neuroimaging. PNFA and SD are included under frontotemporal lobar degenerations. PNFA patients have effortful speech with agrammatism, which is frequently associated with apraxia of speech and demonstrate atrophy in the left Broca's area and s

Premutation female carriers of fragile X syndrome: a pilot study on brain anatomy and metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: It was thought that premutation carriers of fragile X syndrome (FraX) have no neurobiological abnormalities, but there have been no quantitative studies of brain morphometry and metabolism. Thus the authors investigated brain structure and metabolism in premutation carriers of FraX. METHOD: Eight normal IQ, healthy female permutation FraX carriers aged 39 +/- 9 years (mean +/- SD) and 32 age-sex-handedness-matched controls (39 +/- 10 years) were studied; in vivo brain morphometry was measured using volumetric magnetic resonances imaging, and regional cerebral metabolic rates for gl

Spatio-temporal distribution of brain activity associated with audio-visually congruent and incongruent speech and the McGurk Effect.

INTRODUCTION: Spatio-temporal distributions of cortical activity to audio-visual presentations of meaningless vowel-consonant-vowels and the effects of audio-visual congruence/incongruence, with emphasis on the McGurk effect, were studied. The McGurk effect occurs when a clearly audible syllable with one consonant, is presented simultaneously with a visual presentation of a face articulating a syllable with a different consonant and the resulting percept is a syllable with a consonant other than the auditorily presented one. METHODS: Twenty subjects listened to pairs of audio-visually congrue

Auditory cortical connectivity in humans.

To understand auditory cortical processing, the effective connectivity between 15 auditory cortical regions and 360 cortical regions was measured in 171 Human Connectome Project participants, and complemented with functional connectivity and diffusion tractography. 1. A hierarchy of auditory cortical processing was identified from Core regions (including A1) to Belt regions LBelt, MBelt, and 52; then to PBelt; and then to HCP A4. 2. A4 has connectivity to anterior temporal lobe TA2, and to HCP A5, which connects to dorsal-bank superior temporal sulcus (STS) regions STGa, STSda, and STSdp. Thes

[RADIOSURGERY OF INTRACEREBRAL CAVERNOMAS--CURRENT HUNGARIAN PRACTICE].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiosurgery is an increasingly popular treatment option especially for deep eloquent intracerebral cavernomas that are often too risky for surgical removal, but their re-bleed carries significant risk for persisting neurological deficit. Gamma-radiation based radiosurgery has been being available since 2007 in Hungary in Debrecen. Our aim is to summarize our experience accumulated during the first five years of treatment and to compare it to the international experience. PATIENT SELECTION AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 51 cavernomas in 45 patients treated bet

Activation of mu-opioid receptors inhibits lordosis behavior in estrogen and progesterone-primed female rats.

The present study investigated the effect of highly selective mu-opioid receptor (OR) agonists on lordosis behavior in ovariectomized rats treated with 3 microg of estradiol benzoate followed 48 h later by 200 microg of progesterone. Ventricular infusion of the endogenous mu-OR agonists endomorphin-1 and -2 suppressed receptive behavior in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. At 6 microg, both endomorphin-1 and -2 inhibited lordosis behavior within 30 min. However, while the effect of endomorphin-1 lasted 60 min, endomorphin-2 inhibition lasted up to 120 min after infusion. Pretreatment with na

Naloxone injected into the preoptic region has hypophysiotropic and seizurogenic actions in rats.

The effects of microinjection of naloxone, an opiate receptor antagonist, into the medial preoptic area (MPO) and diagonal band of Broca (DBB) on luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) secretion were examined in the intact male rat and female rat in diestrus 1. In both the male and female rats, the injection of 50 micrograms naloxone at 1300 h produced an acute, two- to three-fold increase in serum LH, attaining the peak at 20 min. The PRL concentration in the female 20 min-2 h after the injection was significantly lower than in the saline-injected rat. In the male rat, naloxone caused a

Tractography of supplementary motor area projections in progressive speech apraxia and aphasia.

Progressive apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder affecting the ability to produce phonetically or prosodically normal speech. Progressive AOS can present in isolation or co-occur with agrammatic aphasia and is associated with degeneration of the supplementary motor area. We aimed to assess breakdowns in structural connectivity from the supplementary motor area in patients with any combination of progressive AOS and/or agrammatic aphasia to determine which supplementary motor area tracts are specifically related to these clinical symptoms. Eighty-four patients with progressive AOS

Tracking the Progression and Influence of Beta-Amyloid Plaques Using Percolation Centrality and Collective Influence Algorithm: A Study Using PET Images.

BACKGROUND: The study of brain networks, particularly the spread of disease, is made easier thanks to the network theory. The aberrant accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles in Alzheimer's disease causes disruption in brain networks. The evaluation scores, such as the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and neuropsychiatric inventory questionnaire, which provide a clinical diagnosis, are affected by this build-up. PURPOSE: The percolation of beta-amyloid/tau tangles and their impact on cognitive tests are still unspecified. METHODS: Percolation centrality could be used

Neuroanatomical basis of the nerve growth factor ovulation-induction pathway in llamas†.

The objective of the study was to characterize the anatomical framework and sites of action of the nerve growth factor (NGF)-mediated ovulation-inducing system of llamas. The expression patterns of NGF and its receptors in the hypothalamus of llamas (n = 5) were examined using single and double immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence. We also compare the expression pattern of the P75 receptor in the hypothalamus of llama and a spontaneous ovulator species (sheep, n = 5). Both NGF receptors (TrkA and P75) were highly expressed in the medial septum and diagonal band of Broca, and populations of

Neural activity during natural viewing of Sesame Street statistically predicts test scores in early childhood.

It is not currently possible to measure the real-world thought process that a child has while observing an actual school lesson. However, if it could be done, children's neural processes would presumably be predictive of what they know. Such neural measures would shed new light on children's real-world thought. Toward that goal, this study examines neural processes that are evoked naturalistically, during educational television viewing. Children and adults all watched the same Sesame Street video during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Whole-brain intersubject correlations between

Auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia are associated with reduced functional connectivity of the temporo-parietal area.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia has been conceptualized as a disorder of integration of neural activity across distributed networks. However, the relationship between specific symptom dimensions and patterns of functional connectivity remains unclear. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between auditory-verbal hallucinations (AVH), a particularly prevalent and clinically relevant symptom in schizophrenia, and functional connectivity of the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). METHODS: Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 27 schizophrenia patie

Chapter 17: cognitive assessment in neurology.

Modern interests in cognitive assessment began with Franz Gall's early 19th century theory of mental organology and Paul Broca's reports in the 1860s on patients with focal brain injury and aphemia. These workers spurred interest in assessing delimited mental abilities in relation to discrete cerebral areas. With roots in experimental and educational psychology, the intelligence testing movement added assessment tools that could be applied to neurological patients. Early- to mid-20th-century landmarks were Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon's intelligence scale, Howard Knox's nonverbal performanc

Reorganization of speech production at the motor cortex and cerebellum following capsular infarction: a follow-up functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Based on clinical data, Geschwind assumed left hemisphere dominance of speech production to extend to the cortical representation of articulatory and phonatory functions at the motor cortex. This author suggested, furthermore, that the clinical observation of rapid recovery from articulatory impairments after damage to the left-sided corticobulbar tracts reflects compensatory activation of an alternative pathway involving the contralateral pre-central gyrus and its efferent projections. In order to test this hypothesis, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed 4 and 35 days a
