Allergic airway inflammation induces migration of mast cell populations into the mouse airway.

Mast cells (MCs) and airway nerves play an important role in allergic asthma. However, little is known about the MCs and their interaction with airway nerves during allergic airway inflammation. This study aims to investigate the distribution and proliferation of MC populations in different lung compartments, along with the association of mast cells with nerve endings, using a house dust mite (HDM) model for allergic airway inflammation. BALB/c mice were exposed to HDM extract intranasally (25 μg/50 μl) for 5 consecutive days a week over 7 weeks. Immunofluorescence and Edu stains were used to

The effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on pulmonary structures: a quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The effects of neoadjuvant therapy on perioperative and postoperative outcomes of patients with stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer remain controversial. We investigated histopathological changes possibly caused by neoadjuvant chemotherapy and their effect on the tensile forces of pulmonary structures. METHODS: A prospective study of 30 patients who had undergone lung resection was performed. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 included those who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and Group 2 included those who underwent surgery alone. Tensile stress tests were pe

Immunohistochemical demonstration of substance P in the lower respiratory tract of the rabbit and not of man.

Substance P (SP)-immunoreactive nerve fibres were searched for at all levels of both fetal and adult human lower respiratory tract. Because the demonstrability of substance P immunoreactivity varies between different animal species, rabbit pulmonary tissue was also subjected to SP immunohistochemistry. Human irises and corneas served as positive human controls. The specimens were taken from 10 human lungs during pulmonary operations. Tracheal tissue was obtained from three patients during bronchoscopy. Five fetal human lungs were examined. Human specimens examined included the trachea, main br

Evaluation of bronchial narrowing in coughing dogs with heart murmurs using computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The origin of cough in dogs with heart murmurs is controversial, because the cough could be primary cardiac (eg, pulmonary edema, bronchi compression by left-sided cardiomegaly) or respiratory (eg, bronchomalacia, other bronchial or bronchiolar disease, interstitial lung disease) in origin. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To study the association between left atrium (LA) dilatation and cardiomegaly and bronchial narrowing in coughing dogs with heart murmurs using computed tomography (CT). ANIMALS: Twenty-one client-owned coughing dogs with heart murmurs and 14 historical control dogs. ME

Case report: hepatobronchial lymphatic communications in single ventricle patients as a pathophysiological mechanism of plastic bronchitis: diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Plastic bronchitis is a rare but devastating complication in single ventricle patients after Fontan completion. Recent advances in dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiogram demonstrate the typical pathophysiological mechanism of the thoracic duct leaking lymphatic fluid towards the bronchi resulting in intraluminal casts. This has been termed abnormal pulmonary lymphatic perfusion and has been successfully treated in 94% of patients with thoracic duct occlusion. However, in some cases, this aberrant flow is not identified and therefore no intervention is available

Primary tracheobronchial amyloidosis.

Tracheobronchial amyloidosis is an uncommon localized form of amyloidosis, characterized by amyloid deposits restricted to the trachea, main bronchi and segmental bronchi. We present the case of a retired 67-year-old man with long-term progressive dyspnea, wheezing and chest pain. A diagnosis of tracheobronchial amyloidosis was made after the third fiberoptic bronchoscopy and histological confirmation through Congo red staining of tissue samples.

Necrotizing Tracheobronchitis Caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in a Cow.

This report describes a case of tracheobronchitis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in a cow. A 4-year-old Jersey cow was submitted for necropsy examination. Grossly, the mucosa of the trachea and bronchi was diffusely reddened and was covered by a moderate amount of yellow, caseous material, sometimes with small foci of grey 'cotton-like' appearance, suggestive of filamentous fungus. Microscopical analysis of the trachea and bronchi showed marked diffuse mucosal and submucosal necrosis with a large amount of cellular debris, fibrinous exudation and inflammatory infiltration dominated by macroph

[Effect of different therapy options on bronchial contraction in rats with modeled obstructive pulmonary disease].

In the model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, produced in rats by 60-day exposure to nitrogen dioxide, the effect of different options of combination therapy (corticosteroids, anticholinergics, adrenergic agonists) on the functional state of the bronchi was studied. The contractile activity of strips of the bronchi caused by nerve or smooth muscle stimulation was evaluated. Corticosteroid monotherapy resulted in deterioration of the functional state of the bronchial wall neuromuscular apparatus due to corticosteroid resistance, evolving under the influence of long-term exposure to nit

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica - a 61-year-old female with middle lobe syndrome.

The authors present a case of a 61-year-old female patient suffering from tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TBO). Etiology of this unit is uncertain. TBO is characterised by presence of multiple nodules of various size, situated in the submucosa of the trachea and major bronchi. The course is usually benign, until lesion obstructs the bronchial lumen. In the presented case, occluded middle lobe bronchi resulted in peripheral atelectasis of the lung.

A Case of Esophageal Cancer Treated by Thoracoscopic Esophagectomy after Bilateral Cadaveric Lung Transplantation.

PURPOSE: With de novo cancer, esophagectomy after lung transplantation (LTx) can be challenging because of intrathoracic adhesions, delayed wound healing, and postoperative pulmonary complications, which might be lethal. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman with esophageal cancer had undergone bilateral LTx for end-stage diffuse panbronchiolitis at 50 years of age. Thoracoscopic esophagectomy was performed. Bilateral bronchial arteries and subcarinal and bilateral bronchial lymph nodes were preserved to maintain blood supply to the transplanted bronchi. No ischemic changes were observed in

Feasibility of the lung base-flip approach for complex segmentectomy of the lower lobe.

Segmentectomies of the lung base, such as S9, S10 or S9+S10, present technical difficulties because they do not connect directly to the interlobar fissure. The lung base-flip approach offers easier access to the individual segmental vessels and bronchi. We performed a segmentectomy of the lung base using this approach. To identify the corresponding vessels and bronchi, flipped three-dimensional chest computed tomography images and intraoperative bronchoscopy are essential.

[The effect of temporary endobronchial occlusion on pulmonary gas exchange in the treatment of pyopneumothorax].

An estimation of changes of main hemodynamic, biochemical and laboratory indicators and the function of external ventilation was fulfilled when performing temporary endobronchial occlusion at the level of lobular and main bronchi in 37 patients with pneumothorax. Favorable changes were established in the systems of blood circulation and external ventilation in occlusion of lobular bronchi. Grounds are given for the necessity of intensive anti-inflammatory treatment, oxygenation and maintenance of cardiodynamics in occlusion of the main bronchus.

Core Microbiota in Central Lung Cancer With Streptococcal Enrichment as a Possible Diagnostic Marker.

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis in lung cancer has been underexplored. The aim of this study was to define the bacterial and fungal microbiota of the bronchi in central lung cancer and to compare it with that of the oral and intestinal compartments. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with central lung cancer and sixteen controls without antimicrobial intake during the previous month were recruited. Bacterial and fungal distribution was determined by massive sequencing of bronchial biopsies and saliva and faecal samples. Complex computational analysis was performed to define the core lung microbiota. RESULT

IL-13 and IL-4, but not IL-5 nor IL-17A, induce hyperresponsiveness in isolated human small airways.

BACKGROUND: Specific inflammatory pathways are indicated to contribute to severe asthma, but their individual involvement in the development of airway hyperresponsiveness remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This experimental study in human small bronchi aimed to provide insight into which of the type 2 and type 17 cytokines cause hyperresponsiveness of airway smooth muscle. METHODS: Explanted small bronchi isolated from human lung tissue and human airway smooth muscle cells were treated for 2 and 1 day(s), respectively, with 100 ng/mL of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, or IL-17A, and contractile responses, Ca

The distribution and surface ultrastructure of airway epithelial cells in the rat lung: a scanning electron microscopic study.

The fine structure and distribution of the epithelial cells of the airway in the rat were studied continuously from the trachea to terminal bronchioles by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The airway could be divided into three different regions according to cell population: 1) the trachea and extrapulmonary bronchi; 2) intrapulmonary bronchi (larger than 500 microns in caliber); and 3) bronchioles (smaller than 500 microns in caliber). From their surface structures, the epithelial cells could be classified into ciliated and non-ciliated cells, the latter including brush cells, Clara cells a

Two-Way: A Novel Method for Identifying the Anatomy During Uniportal Thoracoscopic Segmentectomy.

Because the segmental bronchi and vessels are commonly variable and complicated, it is difficult to correctly identify them. Misidentification of the segmental anatomy could result in the failure of segmentectomy and conversion to other surgical procedures such as bisegmentectomy or lobectomy. We describe a novel method to identify the target segmental vessels and bronchi by exposing the adjacent segmental anatomy during uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy, which could help to reduce the chance of misidentification.

Hyperbaric tracheobronchial compression in cetaceans and pinnipeds.

Assessment of the compressibility of marine mammal airways at depth is crucial to understanding vital physiological processes such as gas exchange during diving. Very few studies have directly assessed changes in cetacean and pinniped tracheobronchial shape, and none have quantified changes in volume with increasing pressure. A harbor seal, gray seal, harp seal, harbor porpoise and common dolphin were imaged promptly post mortem via computed tomography in a radiolucent hyperbaric chamber. Volume reconstructions were performed of segments of the trachea and bronchi of the pinnipeds and bronchi

Abnormal origin of the right posterior segmental bronchus: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing availability of chest computed tomography (CT), the detection of small pulmonary nodules has become more common, facilitating the development of lung segmental resection. However, anatomical variations of the bronchi are common, particularly in the right upper lobe of the lung. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of thoracoscopic resection of the posterior segment of the right upper lobe of the lung. Preoperatively, the nodule was believed to be located in the superior segment of the right lower lobe. However, intraoperative exploration revealed that the nodule
