Epidemiology, treatment and burden of Wilson disease in France: A 10-year analysis of the national health insurance database.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Wilson disease (WD) is a rare hereditary, debilitating disease that is fatal if untreated. Given its low prevalence, collecting longitudinal information on large cohorts of patients is challenging. Analysis of health insurance databases offers an approach to meet this challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate longitudinal trends in the presentation and management of patients with WD identified in the French national health insurance database (SNDS). METHODS: This retrospective, longitudinal, observational study identified people with WD in the SNDS database through h

Constraints on Large-Scale White Noise in the Cosmic Density Field.

We present observational constraints on large-scale white noise (LSWN) in the cosmic density field, a phenomenon predicted to arise from nonlinear mode coupling during cosmological evolution. Building on the theoretical framework of our companion paper, where we demonstrated that nonlinearities inevitably redistribute power from small to large scales through mode mixing, we confront these predictions with current cosmological data. We modify the class Boltzmann code to incorporate a white noise component k_{BH}/k in the primordial power spectrum and perform parameter estimation using current c

MicroRNA Signature in Plasma-Derived Extracellular Vesicles in Frontotemporal Dementia.

Background: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disease that shares numerous clinical features with other forms of dementia. In this context, non-coding RNAs, specifically microRNAs (miRNAs), represent a promising tool for differential diagnosis. Since these miRNAs can be isolated from circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) in peripheral blood, they provide a direct insight into FTD-specific molecular processes. Consequently, while EV-contained miRNAs hold potential as disease-specific biomarkers, investigating their relative target genes can help elucidate their precise fun

Learning Ophthalmologist Clinical Reasoning for Glaucoma Diagnosis from Fundus Images.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Ophthalmologists diagnose glaucoma through a structured reasoning process by sequentially evaluating optic nerve head characteristics before reaching a final diagnosis, whereas existing AI systems typically perform direct image classification without providing clinically meaningful reasoning. We present the first clinically annotated fundus reasoning dataset, comprising 1,077 fundus photographs paired with expert-authored six-step diagnostic reports. Building on this dataset, we develop a reasoning-driven vision-language framewor

Self-action distribution system (SADS): From neural network stability analysis to memory networks with low storage space cost.

Currently, neural network code editing is employed directly, without any theoretical analysis of its stability. This practice can lead to network instability and unnecessary resource consumption. To address these issues, this paper makes the following innovative contributions. First, we introduce a method for evaluating the stability of neural networks. Since this evaluation does not require gradient computation, it is applicable to a wide range of complex architectures. By applying this method, algorithm optimization can be performed prior to training, which helps identify potential performan

Trustworthy AI for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer: Automatic segmentation and uncertainty quantification.

Accurate segmentation of lung tumors is essential for advancing personalized medicine in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, stage IV NSCLC presents significant challenges due to heterogeneous tumor morphology and the presence of associated conditions including infection, atelectasis and pleural effusion. The complexity of multicentric datasets further complicates robust segmentation across diverse clinical settings. In this study, we evaluate deep-learning-based approaches for automated segmentation of advanced-stage lung tumors using 3D architectures on 387 CT scans from the Deep-Lu

A tutorial on fitting joint models of M/EEG and behavior to understand cognition.

We present motivation and practical steps necessary to find parameter estimates of joint models of behavior and neural electrophysiological data. This tutorial is written for researchers wishing to build joint models of human behavior and scalp and intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) or magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data, and more specifically those researchers who seek to understand human cognition. Although these techniques could easily be applied to animal models, the focus of this tutorial is on human participants. Joint modeling of M/EEG and behavior requires some knowledge of exis

Circular RNAs: Emblematic Players of Neurogenesis and Neurodegeneration.

In the fascinating landscape of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs) are peeping out as a new promising and appreciated class of molecules with great potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. They come from circularization of single-stranded RNA molecules covalently closed and generated through alternative mRNA splicing. Dismissed for many years, similar to aberrant splicing by-products, nowadays, their role has been regained. They are able to regulate the expression of linear mRNA transcripts at different levels acting as miRNA sponges, interacting with ribonucleoprotei

Searching for new genetic risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders in expression databases.

Genetic variations might contribute to differences in protein activities and gene expression levels observed in complex genetic traits, like neuropsychiatric disease. This finding motivated the development of original approaches using expression studies to guide the finding of new genetic variations. We extended this approach to new genes selected from microarrays studies of brain samples of patients with Alzheimer's disease, major depressive disorder, bipolar affective disorder, and sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The CLCbio Workbench Combined version 3.6.2 was initially used to build exp

Task-specific neural networks for medical imaging using pretrained fragments.

The StitchNet framework introduced a paradigm shift in Neural Architecture Search (NAS) by proposing the construction of neural networks from pre-trained fragments. This approach reduces computational costs and enables task-specific model creation without retraining entire networks. Building on this foundation, our study evaluates the practical application of StitchNet in constructing neural networks tailored to medical image classification tasks. Specifically, we assess its performance on a dataset of retinal images classified into three categories: healthy, dry, and wet AMD (Age-Related Macu

Nature-inspired dual self-catalytic system enabled by urushiol-iron: A green strategy toward tough, conductive, and anti-swelling hydrogels for wearable sensors.

Soft wearable electronics require hydrogels that are mechanically robust, electrically conductive, and easy to fabricate, yet these properties rarely coexist. Here, we solve this dilemma by taking inspiration from natural lacquer, a material used for millennia to create durable coatings. Its key component, urushiol, bears a unique molecular architecture with a catechol head for metal chelation and a long hydrophobic tail. We show that simply mixing urushiol with iron (III) ions (Fe3+) and ammonium persulfate at room temperature triggers rapid gelation through a dual self-catalytic mechanism. U

Virtual Screening of Novel Benzothiozinone Derivatives to Predict Potential Inhibitors of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Kinases 2D-QSAR, Molecular Docking, MM-PBSA Dynamics Simulations, and ADMET Properties.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the infectious agent behind tuberculosis (TB), underscores the significance of targeting enzymes such as arabinosyltransferases in drug development efforts. Benzothiozinone derivatives, which have been assessed for their effectiveness against TB, present a promising avenue for treatment. Utilizing a high virtual screening quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR-VS), a set of forty Benzothiozinone (C1-C40) compounds were investigated to build a robust model with satisfactory performance metrics (R2 = 0.82, R2adj = 0.78, Ntest = 10, R2test = 0.70). Aberrantly downregulated FENDRR by arecoline elevates ROS and myofibroblast activation via mitigating the miR-214/MFN2 axis.

Long non-coding RNA FENDRR possesses both anti-fibrotic and anti-cancer properties, but its significance in the development of premalignant oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) remains unclear. Here, we showed that FENDRR was downregulated in OSF specimens and fibrotic buccal mucosal fibroblasts (fBMFs), and overexpression of FENDRR mitigated various myofibroblasts hallmarks, and vice versa. In the course of investigating the mechanism underlying the implication of FENDRR in myofibroblast transdifferentiation, we found that FENDRR can directly bind to miR-214 and exhibit its suppressive effect on myo

Phase-coupling of neural oscillations contributes to individual differences in peripersonal space.

The peripersonal space (PPS) is a multisensory and sensorimotor interface between our body and the environment. The location of PPS boundary is not fixed. Rather, it adapts to the environmental context and differs greatly across individuals. Recent studies have started to unveil the neural correlates of individual differences in PPS extension; however, this picture is not clear yet. Here, we used approaching auditory stimuli and magnetoencephalography to capture the individual boundary of PPS and examine its neural underpinnings. In particular, building upon previous studies from our own group
