Touchscreen-based approach-avoidance responses to appetitive and threatening stimuli.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals are thought to be biased towards approaching positive stimuli and avoiding negative stimuli. Yet, it is unclear whether this general pattern applies to all stimulus classes or whether biases are more specific. We expected significant approach biases towards two types of positive stimuli, appetitive foods and butterflies; and avoidance biases away from two types of negative stimuli, spoiled foods and spiders. METHODS: A touchscreen-based Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT), using hand gestures toward or away from stimuli assessed biases. Questionnaires and imag

Variations in the microstructural morphology and reflectance of cover scales from a sexually dimorphic wing region of the summer azure butterfly, Celastrina neglecta (W. H. Edwards, 1862) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae).

Sexually dimorphic coloration is common in Lepidoptera. In addition to differences in pigmentation, Lepidopterans also exhibit sexually dimorphic structural coloration. Lycaenidae are unique among Lepidoptera due to the presence of a multilayer pepper-pot photonic structure located within the body of their cover scales. While sexually dimorphic pepper-pot structures in Lycaenidae have previously been observed between male blue scales and female melanic scales, the nature of sexually dimorphic photonic structures within non-pigmented scales has yet to be examined in detail. In this study, we ex

Ultraviolet and yellow reflectance but not fluorescence is important for visual discrimination of conspecifics by Heliconius erato.

Toxic Heliconius butterflies have yellow hindwing bars that - unlike those of their closest relatives - reflect ultraviolet (UV) and long wavelength light, and also fluoresce. The pigment in the yellow scales is 3-hydroxy-dl-kynurenine (3-OHK), which is found in the hair and scales of a variety of animals. In other butterflies like pierids with color schemes characterized by independent sources of variation in UV and human-visible yellow/orange, behavioral experiments have generally implicated the UV component as most relevant to mate choice. This has not been addressed in Heliconius butterfli

Molecular evidence of the involvement of the nucleotide excision repair (NER) system in the repair of the mono(ADP-ribosyl)ated DNA adduct produced by pierisin-1, an apoptosis-inducing protein from the cabbage butterfly.

Pierisin-1 is a potent apoptosis-inducing protein found in the pupal extract of the cabbage white butterfly. Pierisin-1 catalyzes the mono(ADP-ribosyl)ation of the 2'-deoxyguanosine residue and produces a bulky adduct, N2-(ADP-ribos-1-yl)-2'-deoxyguanosine (N2-ADPR-dG) in DNA. Here, we examined the involvement of the nucleotide excision repair (NER) system in the removal of N2-ADPR-dG in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and human cells. The results of mobility shift gel electrophoresis assays using a 50-mer oligodeoxynucleotide containing a single N2-ADPR-dG showed that E. coli UvrAB proteins bound

Cool Bands: Wing bands decrease rate of heating, but not equilibrium temperature in Anartia fatima.

Butterflies regulate their internal thoracic temperature in order to optimize performance activities (e.g. flight, foraging). Previous research has shown that butterfly wings, particularly the innermost portions, play a role in thermoregulation. We investigated to see whether a lightly colored wing band would alter the thermal properties of the banded peacock butterfly (Anartia fatima) with two within subject experiments in a laboratory setting: (1) band color manipulation in which euthanized individuals were heated to thermal equilibrium with the band unaltered and then again with the wing da

Toward standards in practices and techniques on ootaxonomy in the Pieridae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea).

We present a proposal on the standards used on ootaxonomy practices and techniques in the butterfly family Pieridae Duponchel (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) in five stages: 1) getting the specimens, 2) integration into a collection, 3) dissections to recover the exochorion, 4) elaboration of images of it, and 5) the preparation of its description with the necessary diagrams and tabulations. Also, we present the detailed techniques applied in observation and graphic representation, based on the methylene blue staining techniques and those required for the use with the scanning electron microscope

Do we see what we feel? A comparative study of spider size estimation among experts and people who are highly fearful of spiders.

The existence of fear-driven perceptual biases is well-established in the research literature and explained by survival mechanisms, whereas findings on perceptual biases among experts remain inconsistent. This study is the first to compare the impact of emotion and expertise on perception by examining spider size estimation among spider-fearful individuals (N = 58), spider experts (N = 59) and a control group (N = 52). Participants estimated the size of spiders, butterflies and wasps depicted in pictures. In line with prior findings, highly fearful individuals overestimated the size of spiders

Itsy bitsy spider?: Valence and self-relevance predict size estimation.

The current study explored the role of valence and self-relevance in size estimation of neutral and aversive animals. In Experiment 1, participants who were highly fearful of spiders and participants with low fear of spiders rated the size and unpleasantness of spiders and other neutral animals (birds and butterflies). We found that although individuals with both high and low fear of spiders rated spiders as highly unpleasant, only the highly fearful participants rated spiders as larger than butterflies. Experiment 2 included additional pictures of wasps (not self-relevant, but unpleasant) and

Reversing the mere exposure effect in spider fearfuls: Preliminary evidence of sensitization.

A mere exposure effect (MEE) is said to occur when individuals' liking of a suboptimally and repeatedly presented stimulus increases compared to never-presented stimuli, while they are unable to indicate which stimuli were previously presented and which were not. In two experiments, we used the MEE to study automatic evaluative processes in highly spider-fearful individuals (SFs). Pictures of spiders and butterflies were repeatedly presented suboptimally to SFs and to non-anxious controls (NACs). In Experiment 1, both groups showed the MEE for butterflies, preferring previously presented butte

The point of view of the clinician: a prospective study of the mechanism of accidents and the morphology of tibial and fibular shaft fractures.

In a prospective study of 210 tibial shaft fractures, the accident mechanisms and the resultant fracture morphologies were analyzed. 86 fractures occurred due to indirect impact. The fracture morphology in this group consisted of short and long spiral fractures resulting from rotational injuries complicated by anterior torsion butterfly fragments if the person fell forward, posterior torsion butterfly fragments if they fell backwards and complicated by multiple torsion butterfly fragments if it was a high velocity injury. 124 fractures occurred due to direct impact. The fracture morphology in

Cockroaches are scarier than snakes and spiders: Validation of an affective standardized set of animal images (ASSAI).

Research on emotional processes has been closely related to the use of emotional stimuli, promoting the development of different standardized sets of images. However, some kinds of images that would be relevant in clinical psychology research are not available, especially for small animal phobias. The aim of the present study is to validate a set of animal images that includes images of cockroaches, which are not present in the current sets of images. Two hundred and forty images depicting five types of animals (cockroaches, spiders, snakes, cats, and butterflies) were collected from online pu

Kinetics, kinematics, and performance modeling of two arm swing techniques in the swimming kick-start.

This experimental study investigated the effect of two arm swing techniques on kinematic and kinetic variables during the swimming kick-start. Twelve elite male swimmers performed starts using forward and butterfly arm swing techniques. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using a Kistler Performance Analysis System. Data were analyzed for variables calculated from ground reaction force (GRF) and block, above the water, and underwater performance. The results revealed that work, power, and most of the force parameters measured higher values for the butterfly arm swing technique (p < 0.05)

Gymnurahemecus bulbosus gen. et sp. nov. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) infecting smooth butterfly rays, Gymnura micrura (Myliobatiformes: Gymnuridae) in the northern Gulf of Mexico, with a taxonomic key and further evidence for monophyly of chondrichthyan blood flukes.

Gymnurahemecus bulbosus gen. et sp. nov. infects the heart of smooth butterfly rays, Gymnura micrura in the Gulf of Mexico. Gymnurahemecus differs from all other accepted aporocotylid genera by having one column of C-shaped lateral tegumental spines, a medial oesophageal bulb anterior to a diverticulate region of the oesophagus, inverse U-shaped intestinal caeca, a non-looped testis, an oviducal ampulla, a Laurer's canal, and a post-caecal common genital pore. Development and verification of a protocol to quantify hip joint kinematics: an evaluation of ice hockey goaltender pads on hip motion.

BACKGROUND: The butterfly save technique is commonly used by ice hockey goaltenders and has recently been identified as a potential mechanism for hip joint injuries due to the extreme body positions involved. Unfortunately, commonly used kinematic marker sets that determine these body positions are heavily influenced by skin motion artifact and are obscured by protective equipment, making it difficult to obtain reliable measures of hip motion. PURPOSE: To create a new kinematic protocol that could be used when protective equipment prevents typical marker placements and to use this protocol to

Chemical Ecology and Olfaction in Short-Horned Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Chemoreception plays a crucial role in the reproduction and survival of insects, which often rely on their sense of smell and taste to find partners, suitable habitats, and food sources, and to avoid predators and noxious substances. There is a substantial body of work investigating the chemoreception and chemical ecology of Diptera (flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies); but less is known about the Orthoptera (grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, and wēta). Within the Orthoptera, the family Acrididae contains about 6700 species of short-horned grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are fascinating o

MR Imaging Diagnosis of Diencephalic-Mesencephalic Junction Dysplasia in Fetuses with Developmental Ventriculomegaly.

Diencephalic-mesencephalic junction dysplasia is a rare malformation characterized by a poorly defined junction between the diencephalon and the mesencephalon, associated with a characteristic butterfly-like contour of the midbrain (butterfly sign). This condition may be variably associated with other brain malformations, including callosal abnormalities and supratentorial ventricular dilation, and is a potential cause of developmental hydrocephalus. Here, we have reported 13 fetuses with second-trimester obstructive ventriculomegaly and MR features of diencephalic-mesencephalic junction dyspl
