Inspection and Modeling Analysis of Locking Pins in the Penultimate-Stage Blades of a 600 MW Steam Turbine.

The fracture behavior of a locking pin used in the penultimate-stage blades of a 600 MW steam turbine in a thermal power plant was investigated through microstructural and microhardness characterization, fracture surface and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, as well as finite element load simulation. The microhardness values measured on the cross-section of the service pins ranged from 528 to 541 HV0.1, showing little difference from the unused pins. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that approximately 70% of the fracture surfaces exhibited an intergranular "rock cand

Production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)/poly(lactic acid) from industrial wastewater by wild-type Cupriavidus necator H16.

The massive production of urban and industrial wastes has created a clear need for alternative waste management processes. One of the more promising strategies is to use waste as raw material for the production of biopolymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). In this work, a lactate-enriched stream obtained by anaerobic digestion (AD) of wastewater (WW) from a candy production plant was used as a feedstock for PHA production in wild-type Cupriavidus necator H16. Unexpectedly, we observed the accumulation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)/poly(lactic acid) (P(3HB)/PLA), suggesting that the non-eng

'Erythritol', a safe natural sweetener exhibits multi-stage anti-malarial activity by permeating into Plasmodium falciparum through aquaglyceroporin channel.

The increased resistance of human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) to currently used drugs necessities the development of novel anti-malarials. Here, we examine the potential of erythritol, a sugar substitute for therapeutic intervention. Erythritol is a permeant of Plasmodium falciparum aquaglyceroporin (PfAQP) which is a multifunctional channel responsible for maintaining hydro-homeostasis. We show that erythritol effectively inhibited growth and progression of asexual blood stage malaria parasite, and effect invasion and egress processes. It also inhibited the liver stage (sporoz

Early versus delayed oral sialagogues for the prevention of salivary gland dysfunction after radioiodine therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland dysfunction is a recognized complication of radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer. Oral sialagogues are commonly recommended, but their optimal timing remains uncertain. This systematic review compares early (<24 h) versus delayed (>24 h) sialagogue initiation. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane from inception to January 2026. "Early" protocols initiated stimulation within 24 h post-RAI, while "delayed" protocols initiated after 24 h. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed us

Enhancing ascorbic acid delivery and stability by yeast microencapsulation in vitro and food matrices: A comparative study of Candida, and Kluyveromyces species.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is highly unstable and susceptible to degradation under heat, oxygen, and moisture, which significantly limits its shelf life and functional efficiency in food and pharmaceutical systems. Therefore, developing natural and efficient delivery systems to improve its protection and controlled release have a critical role in food science. This study aimed to enhance the stability and release behavior of ascorbic acid by entrapping it into plasmolysed (P) and non-plasmolysed (NP) yeast cells of Candida utilis and Kluyveromyces lactis. Within these systems, non-plasmolysed K

Flavored Tobacco User Characteristics in U.S. young Adults: Wave 5 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Introduction: Flavorings are one of the major appealing factors of current tobacco products, especially for young adults. They constantly evolve, and new flavorings are introduced to the market every year, but little is known about user profiles of flavored tobacco products (FTPs). Methods: We analyzed young adult (ages 18-24) tobacco product users (N = 4,707) from Wave 5 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. We applied bivariate analyses to compare individuals who use FTP and non-FTPs by different flavor types (i.e., menthol/mint, fruit, candy/sweets, and tobacco). Paramet

Feasibility and acceptability of miracle fruit application prior to the consumption of sour-tasting foods as a weight-loss strategy in adults with diabetes or prediabetes: A randomized crossover trial.

Miracle fruit (MF) has emerged as a promising option for healthy noncaloric sweeteners due to its sour-to-sweet taste-modifying effects and high antioxidant activity. We aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of using MF as a weight-loss strategy for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes. Fifty Korean-American men and women (25 participants each) aged 45-75 years with diabetes or prediabetes were recruited in this study. They participated in a randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial where they took the assigned tablet (either an MF tablet or a placebo-sugar candy) 10 min b

Endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysms and dissections in patients with genetically triggered aortic diseases.

Connective tissue disease (CTD) syndromes involve the ascending, aortic arch, and thoracoabdominal aorta and are associated with higher risk of aortic aneurysm or dissection. Currently, vascular societies generally recommend open repair as the first option for aortic disease in patients with CTD. However, the implementation of endovascular techniques for patients with CTD with aortic pathologies seems to have increased in recent years, mainly in patients of high surgical risk or in urgent situations. Endovascular treatment of aortic arch pathologies in patients with CTD have been feasible in e

Distal Neo-Neck Formation for Chronic Type B Dissection: False Lumen Closure After TEVAR.

OBJECTIVES:: Patients with chronic aortic dissection often require repeat interventions due to enlargement of the pressurized false lumen or disseminated intravascular coagulation even after additional thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) to occlude the entry tear. Residual false lumen flow can persist even after performing the candy-plug technique or branched stent-graft placement in some cases. We have devised a new method for false lumen closure. METHODS:: From December 2010 to May 2017, 5 patients (mean age: 57 [13] years, range: 43-77 years) with chronic dissection at the aortic a
