The role of parents in the development of the communicative competence of their children has been of growing interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of speech and language therapy. Researchers have attempted to define and test specific hypotheses regarding the nature and degree of the influence of parental interaction styles upon the developing child's pragmatic skills. The literature includes studies regarding normal children and those with speech and language impairments. Practitioners have endeavoured to move towards a firmer framework of partnership with parents which will u

As psychological and physiological development and circumstances vary considerably, the problems of speech and language in children are further complicated. The speech therapists (ST) who have been concerned with these children and their families are requested eagerly to reconsider and control their own communicative attitude. Furthermore, STs have to improve clinical technique that is appropriate to each child. In this report, the author shows the outline of the speech and language problems of children, and discusses the merit and demerit of speech therapy itself. The clinical approach for mo

PURPOSE: Although researchers have explored parental perspectives on childhood speech and language disorders, this work has mostly been conducted in English-speaking countries. Little is known about parental experiences across countries. Participation in the COST Action IS1406 'Enhancing children's oral language skills across Europe and beyond' provided an opportunity to conduct cross-cultural qualitative interviews. The aims were to explore how parents construe inclusion and/or exclusion of their child and how parents involve themselves in order to facilitate inclusion.
METHOD: Parents from

Our objectives were to document and examine socioeconomic gradients across a comprehensive set of child development measures in a population living in extreme poverty, and to interpret these gradients in light of findings from the neuroscience literature. We assessed a nationally representative sample of 3-6-year-old children (n = 1332) from 150 communities of Madagascar using standard tests of development. We found that children whose families were in the top wealth quintile or whose mothers had secondary education performed significantly better across almost all measures of cognitive and lan

The diagnostic criteria of Asperger's syndrome (AS), considered a part of the autistic spectrum disorder, are still unclear. A critical marker, which distinguishes AS from autism, is the presence of language. The ability of a child with AS to acquire and use language early results in the fact that AS usually is diagnosed much later than autism. Autism is not usually diagnosed until around the age of 3, whereas AS usually is not diagnosed until the child is 6 or 7 years of age. In the present article, using Eshkol-Wachman movement notation, we present evidence that abnormal movement patterns ca

PURPOSE: We investigated and compared the outcomes from two standardized, norm-referenced screening assessments of language (i.e., Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Preschool-Second Edition [CELFP-2], Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation-Screening Test [DELV-ST]) with African American preschoolers whose spoken dialect differed from that of General American English (GAE). We (a) described preschoolers' performance on the CELFP-2 Core Language Index (CLI) and its subtests with consideration of degree of dialect variation (DVAR) observed, (b) investigated how the application of

PURPOSE: Children with specific language impairment (SLI) are underidentified, despite a robust literature on their language abilities and a clinical grammar marker. Adlof and Hogan (2019) call for school systems to assess oral language and provide supports through response to intervention (RTI), with the aim of identifying and supporting children with SLI and other language impairments. However, it is unknown how teachers make educational decisions for children with SLI.
METHOD: A web-based survey was distributed to public school teachers nationwide (N = 304). In this observational study, te

This study explored whether ASD phenotypes in the child were associated with a history of anxiety or depression in the mother. We hypothesized that an ASD profile in children characterized by mild delays and increased rates of dysregulation would be associated with preexisting maternal anxiety or depression. Participants were 672 preschool children with ASD and their mothers. Children were classified as ASD after a comprehensive developmental evaluation. Mothers reported whether a healthcare provider ever diagnosed them with anxiety or depression before the birth of their child. Four child ASD

BACKGROUND: Multilingual children in monolingual education systems are generally assessed against monolingual norms, raising questions about identifying genuine language support needs versus expected developmental trajectories.
AIMS: This study aimed to identify: (1) the amount of cumulative exposure to the societal language (SL) beyond which multilingual children perform within the range of monolinguals (at group level) in terms of SL proficiency, and (2) the point at which cumulative SL experience no longer correlates with SL proficiency outcomes.
METHODS: We examined multilingual learners

Oral narratives are important for assessing children as narratives provide useful information about children's language development. This study aimed to explore how the narrative skills of Cypriot-Greek speaking children develop in the domains of syntactic productivity, complexity, and lexical diversity, during their preschool and primary school years. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether there was any difference in the performance of boys and girls on the narrative measures. One hundred and twenty-nine 4-9-year-old typically developing Cypriot-Greek-speaking children were recru

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

Most deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are born to hearing parents and steered toward spoken rather than signed language, introducing a delay in language access. This study investigated the effects of this delay on number acquisition. DHH children (N = 44, meanage = 58 months, 21F, >50% White) and typically-hearing (TH) children (N = 79, meanage = 49 months, 51F, >50% White) were assessed on number and language in 2011-13. DHH children showed similar trajectories to TH children but delayed timing; a binary logistic regression showed that the odds of being a cardinal-principle (CP) know

PURPOSE: Narrative assessment is one potentially underutilized and inconsistent method speech-language pathologists may use when considering a diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD). However, narration research encompasses many varied methodologies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to (a) investigate how various narrative assessment types (e.g., macrostructure, microstructure, and internal state language) differentiate children with typical development (TD) from children with DLD, (b) identify specific narrative assessment measures that result in greater group differe

RATIONALE: Phelan-McDermid syndrome, also known as chromosome 22q13.3 deletion syndrome, is a genetic disorder primarily caused by a chromosome 22q13.3 deletion or mutation. The primary clinical manifestations include intellectual disability, delayed language development, behavioral delays, hypotonia, autism spectrum disorder, mild deformities, and epilepsy. The clinical symptoms of this disease are associated with chromosomal deletions, and mild cases may be easily misdiagnosed as autism spectrum disorder.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 3-year-old girl was admitted for "chromosomal abnormality (heteroz

OBJECTIVE: To maximize outcomes for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, it is essential to develop effective early interventions. Parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) are a promising form of early communication interventions for DHH toddlers. The current study tests the effect of the PMI by evaluating (1) the effect of the PMI on parent strategy use and child communication and (2) the extent to which communication mode moderates these effects.
METHODS: This single-site parallel stratified clinical trial (2 × 2; hearing device, communication mode) enrolled 96 parent-child dyads. Child inc

OBJECTIVE: The current meta-analytic review provides a comprehensive synthesis of studies examining parent exposure to ACEs and the developmental and mental health outcomes of their children.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Eligible studies up to August 2021 were identified through comprehensive database searches in PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Embase. Studies that were included examined the intergenerational effects of parent ACEs on child development (i.e., cognitive, language, motor, social difficulties, and early social-emotional development) or mental health (i.e., internalizing problems, externaliz

BACKGROUND: Effective support for children's speech, language, and communication development is essential to prevent long-term negative outcomes. Parental behaviours play a critical role in whether children are referred to and receive speech-language therapy.
AIMS: This study aimed to identify predictors of parents receiving Speech-language Therapy using longitudinal data from Growing Up in New Zealand.
METHOD: Data were drawn from the Growing Up in New Zealand study, which is representative of the national child population. The analysis focused on children with reported speech concerns by a
