Revisiting Planting Density in Rainfed Olive: Yield, Water Productivity and Resilience in Different Mediterranean Regions.

Across the Mediterranean, most olive orchards are still rainfed and have traditionally been planted at low density on the assumption that wide spacing buffers the risk of crop failure in dry years. We tested this assumption with the process-based model OliveCan, simulating three planting densities (100, 204 and 408 trees ha-1) at three contrasting sites (Córdoba, Izmir and Pisa) on shallow and deep soils under a baseline climate and two perturbations (+2 °C and -10% rainfall). Increasing density raised both yield and water productivity (WPy, the yield-to-evapotranspiration ratio) in all studie

Blazing a Trail for Fire Management and Smoke Health Collaboration: Takeaways From the 2024 Rocky Mountain Wildfire Smoke Symposium.

Wildfire activity in the United States is increasing due to climate change, land management practices, and human ignitions, reversing decades of air quality progress. Wildfire is an essential process in fire-adapted ecosystems, but fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke poses significant health risks both near the fire source and in communities far from fire-prone areas. Public health and forest management are often viewed as having conflicting goals-reducing smoke exposure versus restoring fire to ecosystems-but opportunities for collaboration exist. We analyzed an interdisciplin

Legitimacy-building to establish climate services in Uganda's health system: The role of digital health platform.

Establishing climate services within health systems is increasingly recognized as essential for strengthening resilience in low- and middle-income countries, yet little is known about how such efforts gain legitimacy. This case study examines the early-stage establishment of climate services within Uganda's national health system through the DHIS2 digital health platform. Drawing on legitimacy theory and boundary object theory, we trace how actors mobilized pragmatic, moral, and emerging cognitive forms of legitimacy, and how the platform mediated these processes. We introduce the notion of di

Nature contact and adolescent paper-reuse behavior: place attachment versus climate anxiety in a two-wave study of Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Nature contact is often linked to pro-environmental behavior, but the psychological processes connecting these experiences to later behavior remain unclear. This study examined reusing paper and compared two theoretically distinct pathways: a positive-bonding pathway through place attachment and a threat-mobilization pathway through climate anxiety. METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 504 Chinese adolescents nested in 15 classrooms. They reported their nature contact during school days, after school, and on weekends, place attachment, climate anxiety, and pa

Engagement, resilience, and social-emotional competence in university sports dance education: a moderated mediation model.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations among sports dance learning engagement, psychological resilience, perceived supportive climate, and social-emotional competence (SEC), with particular attention to a hypothesized indirect association through psychological resilience and whether the engagement-resilience association varied across levels of supportive climate. METHODS: Cross-sectional self-report data were collected from 615 undergraduate students enrolled in sports dance courses at three universities in China. Latent-variable structural equation modeling was used to examine the d

Multigenerational adaptation alters methylmercury uptake in cyanobacteria under warming and elevated CO2.

Climate-driven increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperature strongly regulate the physiology of phytoplankton, the primary entry point for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic food webs. How multigenerational adaptation to these stressors reshapes cellular traits governing MeHg uptake remains unclear. Here, we exposed the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa to long-term adaptation under elevated temperature (+5 °C) or CO2 (+580 ppm), then quantified MeHg uptake and cellular partitioning. Both stressors reduced cellular MeHg accumulation by 36% under warming

Multiple stressors rewire trophic cascades and ecosystem processes in freshwater systems.

Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly exposed to climate warming and diffuse chemical pollution, yet their combined ecological impacts remain poorly understood. Using a full-factorial mesocosm experiment spanning winter and summer, we tested how a mixture of common herbicides and fungicides (metazachlor, S-metolachlor, chloridazon, metribuzin, propiconazole, and terbuthylazine) at environmentally realistic concentrations interacts with +4 °C warming to affect community structure and ecosystem functioning. We found that warming and the pesticide mixture produced complex, non-additive responses

Opportunities in multiscale modeling of mosquito-borne flaviviruses.

Mosquito-borne flaviviruses, such as Zika, dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever virus, represent a growing public health concern due to their widespread distribution and the severe diseases they cause. These viruses are difficult to control as climate change and urbanization help mosquitoes expand into new areas, increasing the risk of outbreaks. Mathematical models play a key role in understanding their spread, providing insights at every level-from how the virus multiplies inside cells to how it circulates through entire populations. This review examines various approaches used in modeling ar

Marine iodine emissions in a changing world.

Iodine is a critical trace element involved in many diverse and important processes in the Earth system. The importance of iodine for human health has been known for over a century, with low iodine in the diet being linked to goitre, cretinism and neonatal death. Research over the last few decades has shown that iodine has significant impacts on tropospheric photochemistry, ultimately impacting climate by reducing the radiative forcing of ozone (O3) and air quality by reducing extreme O3 concentrations in polluted regions. Iodine is naturally present in the ocean, predominantly as aqueous iodi

Integration of hydrogeological data, GIS and AHP techniques applied to delineate groundwater potential zones in sandstone, limestone and shales rocks of the Damoh district, (MP) central India.

The Damoh district, which is located in the central India and characterized by limestone, shales, and sandstone compact rock. The district has been facing groundwater development challenges and problems for several decades. To facilitate groundwater management, it is crucial to monitoring and planning based on geology, slope, relief, land use, geomorphology, and the types of the basaltic aquifer in the drought-groundwater deficit area. Moreover, the majority of farmers in the area are heavily dependent on groundwater for their crops. Therefore, delineation of groundwater potential zones (GPZ)

Long-term decline in above-ground carbon sinks in Brazilian tropical and subtropical forests.

Recent evidence indicates that Brazilian forests are shifting from persistent carbon sinks to emerging carbon sources, with important implications for the global climate. To investigate this trend, we analyse long-term census data from 49 forest sites spanning southeast and southern Brazil, including tropical and subtropical forests. We examine above-ground carbon dynamics and its relationship with tree diversity and functional traits that are tightly linked with species' carbon processing and storage capacities. Our findings reveal a long-term trend of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic h

Intensification of daily tropical precipitation extremes from more organized convection.

Tropical precipitation extremes and their changes with surface warming are investigated using global storm resolving simulations and high-resolution observations. The simulations demonstrate that the mesoscale organization of convection, a process that cannot be physically represented by conventional global climate models, is important for the variations of tropical daily accumulated precipitation extremes. In both the simulations and observations, daily precipitation extremes increase in a more organized state, in association with larger, but less frequent, storms. Repeating the simulations f

[Comparative characteristics of the immunologic structure of children's collectives as regards scarlatina in different climatic zones].

An immunological study (in respect to scarlet fever) of children in children's collective bodies was conducted in 1971-1972 simultaneously in two towns-Ashkhabad and Petrozavodsk located in the contrast climatic zones. Results of Dick's test and passive hemagglutination test indicated no significant differences in the level and intensity of antitoxic immunity in children of both cities; only during the autumn period, corresponding to the seasonal increase in the incidence of scarler fever in Ashkabad, the number of immune children in this town proved to be greater than in Petrozavodsk, this be

Spatiotemporally Explicit Epidemic Model for West Nile Virus Outbreak in Germany: An Inversely Calibrated Approach.

Since the first autochthonous transmission of West Nile Virus was detected in Germany (WNV) in 2018, it has become endemic in several parts of the country and is continuing to spread due to the attainment of a suitable environment for vector occurrence and pathogen transmission. Increasing temperature associated with a changing climate has been identified as a potential driver of mosquito-borne disease in temperate regions. This scenario justifies the need for the development of a spatially and temporarily explicit model that describes the dynamics of WNV transmission in Germany. In this study

Challenges in developing methods for quantifying the effects of weather and climate on water-associated diseases: A systematic review.

Infectious diseases attributable to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene (e.g. Cholera, Leptospirosis, Giardiasis) remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income countries. Climate and weather factors are known to affect the transmission and distribution of infectious diseases and statistical and mathematical modelling are continuously developing to investigate the impact of weather and climate on water-associated diseases. There have been little critical analyses of the methodological approaches. Our objective is to review and summarize statistical and m

Growth decline in European beech associated with temperature-driven increase in reproductive allocation.

Climate change is impacting forests in complex ways, with indirect effects arising from interactions between tree growth and reproduction often overlooked. Our 43-y study of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) showed that rising summer temperatures since 2005 have led to more frequent seed production events. This shift increases reproductive effort but depletes the trees' stored resources due to insufficient recovery periods between seed crops. Consequently, annual tree ring increments have declined by 28%, dropping from a stable average of 1.60 mm y-1 between 1980 and 2005 to 1.16 mm y-1 thereaf

Inside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with Hans-Otto Pörtner.

Hans-Otto Pörtner is a leading animal physiologist based at the University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Germany, who first published in Journal of Experimental Biology in 1986. Since then, he has specialised in the physiology of marine vertebrates and invertebrates, with an interest in the impact of hypoxia and temperature on survival, developing the concept of oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance. It was Pörtner's work on the impact of rising CO2 levels on marine organisms that brought him to the attention of the Intergo

Spatial relationship between land-use/land-cover change and land surface temperature in the Dongting Lake area, China.

The Dongting Lake area (China) is a climate change-sensitive and ecologically fragile area and plays a crucial role in the regulation of the regional climate. In recent decades, rapid social and economic development has led to increased land use/land cover (LULC) changes in the Dongting Lake area, which affect the surface energy balance and hydrological processes. Its contemporary variability under climate change remains highly uncertain. Therefore, we retrieved the Land surface temperature (LST) from the Landsat 7 data and explored its relationship with the LULC types. The results showed that
