Background: Cognitive biases play an important role in the formation and maintenance of delusions. These biases are indicators of a weak reflective mind, or reduced engaging in reflective and deliberate reasoning. In three experiments, we tested whether a bias to accept non-sense statements as profound, treat metaphorical statements as literal, and suppress intuitive responses is related to psychotic-like experiences. Methods: We tested deliberate reasoning and psychotic-like experiences in the general population and in patients with a former psychotic episode. Deliberate reasoning was assesse

Why do people gamble? A large body of research suggests that cognitive distortions play an important role in pathological gambling. Many of these distortions are specific cases of a more general misperception of randomness, specifically of an illusory perception of patterns in random sequences. In this article, we provide further evidence for the assumption that gamblers are particularly prone to perceiving illusory patterns. In particular, we compared habitual gamblers to a matched sample of community members with regard to how much they exhibit the choice anomaly 'probability matching'. Prob

Cigarette smokers and substance users discount the value of delayed outcomes more steeply than non-users. Higher discounting rates are associated with relapse and poorer treatment outcomes. The left dorsolateral prefontal cortex (DLPFC) exerts an inhibitory influence on impulsive or seductive choices. Greater activity in the prefrontal cortex is associated with lower discounting rates. We hypothesized that increasing activity in the left DLPFC with high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF rTMS) would decrease delay discounting and decrease impulsive decision-making in a

BACKGROUND: The effect of public service announcements aimed at promoting primary prevention of skin cancer may be limited by superficial cognitive processing. The use of both pictures and textual arguments in sun protection public service announcements were evaluated for their potentially beneficial effects on judgment, cognitive processing and persuasiveness.
METHODS: In a 2 x 2 factorial experimental design individuals were shown public service announcements that advocated the advantages of sun protection measures in different versions in which a picture was present or not present and a te

OBJECTIVE: Electroencephalographic (EEG) coherence is one of the most relevant physiological measures used to detect abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. The present study applies a task-related EEG coherence approach to understand cognitive processing in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls.
METHODS: EEG coherence for alpha and gamma frequency bands was analyzed in a group of patients with schizophrenia and a group of healthy controls during the performance of an ecological task of sustained attention. We compared EEG coherence when participants presented externally dire

BACKGROUND: Generative AI is rapidly reshaping graduate students' academic research practices. Existing research lacks both literacy models specific to graduate students and a unifying theoretical framework to explain each dimension's functional role and interrelationships, constraining its cultivation and evaluation.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 14 professors were analyzed using grounded theory, with Marzano's taxonomy of educational objectives serving as the theoretical framework for selective coding. A corresponding scale was developed and empirically validated with 308 graduat

Neonatal seizures are high-risk clinical events that require rapid recognition but present subtle symptoms. Although simulation-based education supports clinical competence, the use of escape-room-based approaches in neonatal nursing education remains underexplored. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of nursing students regarding escape room-based simulation for managing neonatal seizure scenarios. This descriptive qualitative study involved 8 undergraduate nursing students engaged in a 5-stage escape-room simulation using a high-fidelity neonatal simulator (Super Tory S2220,

Information processing is a core element of cognitive processes in the brain. Rooted in the idea postulated by John von Neumann that the stochasticity of neural operations might essentially be a reflection of the probabilistic nature of information, it can be argued that fluctuations in the complexity of the brain operations should reflect aspects of information processing activities undertaken to infer nuances embedded in the sensory data. The current study elucidates these aspects by examining the intricate relationship between information processing in the brain, reflected in the complexity

Subjective well-being (SWB) is the eternal pursuit of all mankind. Individual differences in SWB may reflect the way of emotional processing. Neuroimaging studies have partly examined the neural mechanism of the individual differences in SWB using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). However, few studies have investigated the relationship between the individual differences in SWB and brain functional connectivity during facial emotion processing task. Here, we applied negative facial emotion processing task-based fMRI to explore the brain functional basis of the indiv

Little is known about the effect of migraine on neural cognitive networks. However, cognitive dysfunction is increasingly being recognized as a comorbidity of chronic pain. Pain appears to affect cognitive ability and the function of cognitive networks over time, and decrements in cognitive function can exacerbate affective and sensory components of pain. We investigated differences in cognitive processing and pain-cognition interactions between 14 migraine patients and 14 matched healthy controls using an fMRI block-design with two levels of task difficulty and concurrent heat (painful and no

BACKGROUND: Cognitive insight, a higher-order insight encompassing metacognitive processes, is directly linked to patients' help-seeking behavior and disease self-management. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and depression are closely comorbid major global public health problems. Existing studies show depressed patients with NSSI have executive dysfunction, which may further impair metacognitive abilities. However, research on cognitive insight in this population remains scarce to date. This study aimed to investigate cognitive insight deficits in these patients, to provide evidence for precise

Pantomime production is commonly interpreted as reflecting tool-use-related cognitive processes. Yet, in everyday life, pantomime deserves a communication function and the exaggeration of amplitude found during pantomime compared to real tool use may reflect the individual's attempt to communicate the intended gesture. Therefore, the question arises about whether pantomime is a communicative behavior that is nevertheless supported only by non-social cognitive processes. We contribute to answering this question by using kinematic analyses. Participants performed the pantomime of using a saw or

Relationships between pain variables, emotional functioning, and cognitive inefficiency as assessed by the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) were investigated. In general, the tendency to make cognitive errors was found to be related to emotional difficulties but to be unrelated to pain variables. Four explanations were proposed: First, that increased reports of cognitive and affective difficulties may reflect a "complaining" response set; second, that the constructs of cognitive inefficiency and affective distress overlap while the constructs of the former and pain do not; third, cogniti

BACKGROUND: Aβ deposition in the brain does not necessarily lead to cognitive impairment, and that blood supply may have other unexplained regulatory effects on Aβ. Therefore, there appears to be a more complex relationship between blood supply, Aβ deposition, and cognitive impairment that warrants further exploration.
METHODS: This cohort study collected four longitudinal follow-up datasets, including a total of 281 subjects, followed for four years. Three-dimensional time-of-flight angiography and pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling were used to assess hippocampal vascularization patte

Children and adolescents with conduct problems participate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), either in individual or group format, in view of learning social problem-solving skills that enable them to behave in more independent and situation-appropriate ways. Parents must support their child's learning processes in everyday life and therefore these processes need attention in CBT sessions in which parents and their child participate. The social problem-solving model of CBT previously described (Matthys & Schutter, Clin Child Fam Psychol Rev 25:552-572, 2022; Matthys & Schutter, Clin Child

BACKGROUND: Various reasons may lead to cognitive symptoms in elderly, including the development of cognitive decline and dementia. Often, mixed pathologies such as neurodegeneration and cerebrovascular disease co-exist in these patients. Diagnostic work-up commonly includes imaging modalities such as FDG PET, MRI, and CT, each delivering specific information.
OBJECTIVE: To study the informative value of neuroimaging-based data supposed to reflect neurodegeneration (FDG PET), cerebral small vessel disease (MRI), and cerebral large vessel atherosclerosis (CT) with regard to cognitive performan

OBJECTIVE: The interaction between affective and cognitive processes has been examined using the late positive potential (LPP) component of the event-related brain potential. The LPP is elicited not only by affective stimuli but also by nonaffective stimuli that require effortful cognitive processing. However, it is unclear whether these LPPs are equivalent. The present study decomposed the LPP into subcomponents that responded differently to affective content and cognitive demands.
METHODS: The participants (N=21) performed four types of revised oddball tasks, in which one affective and five

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly become an everyday learning resource for university students, yet evidence on whether such use is associated with stronger or weaker critical thinking is sharply divided. Recent work documents both cognitive scaffolding and "metacognitive laziness" effects, suggesting that the AI-cognition relationship is contingent on how students engage with AI-generated feedback. Drawing on the extended-mind framework, cognitive load theory and feedback-literacy theory, we test a cross-sectional moderated mediation model in which GenAI feedback literacy

INTRODUCTION: Early-Onset (EOAD) and Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD) are often described as presenting distinct cognitive phenotypes. However, reported differences are inconsistent and may reflect demographic and severity-related confounding rather than stable etiological distinctions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in 776 patients with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (EOAD, n = 175; LOAD, n = 601). Cognitive performance was assessed using the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia

The neural bases of cognitive impairment(s) in alcohol use disorders (AUDs) have been explained either with the specific involvement of frontal regions mostly affected by alcohol neurotoxic effects, or with a global brain damage underlying different neuro-cognitive alterations. Novel insights into this issue might come from the analysis of resting-state brain activity, representing a baseline level of intrinsic connectivity within and between the networks underlying cognitive performance. We thus addressed the neural bases of cognitive impairment(s) in 22 AUD patients, compared with 18 healthy
