Interobserver and intermodality agreement for detection of small bowel Crohn's disease with MR enterography and CT enterography.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) and computed tomography enterography (CTE) visualizes small bowel Crohn's disease (CD) and its complications with high accuracy. The aim of this study was to determine the interobserver and intermodality agreement for detection of small bowel CD. METHODS: Fifty patients with suspected or known CD were included in the study and all patients underwent MRE and CTE on the same day. Four radiologists with experience in MRE and CTE techniques participated. Observers were blind to patient histories, results of ileocolonoscopies, and other small bowel

PET/CT colonography: a novel non-invasive technique for assessment of extent and activity of ulcerative colitis.

PURPOSE: Extent of involvement and activity of ulcerative colitis (UC) is best evaluated by colonoscopy. Colonoscopy however carries risk during acute exacerbation. We investigated the utility of PET/CT colonography for assessment of extent and activity of UC. METHODS: Within a 1-week window, 15 patients with mild to moderately active UC underwent colonoscopy and PET/CT colonography 60 min after injection of 10 mCi of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). PET activity score based on the amount of FDG uptake and endoscopic mucosal activity in seven colonic segments of each patient was recorded. The

Dry preparation for virtual CT colonography with fecal tagging using water-soluble contrast medium: initial results.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a dry bowel preparation, i.e. without laxative fluids, for virtual CT colonography (VCTC), and its impact on patient acceptance compared with conventional colonoscopy (CC). A randomly chosen patient population scheduled for CC ( n=11) was first submitted to VCTC after a dry preparation, consisting of low-residue meals combined with a small amount of a iodinated water-soluble contrast medium during each meal 3 days before VCTC. In different colon segments and between different persons, the degree of tagging in VCTC was evaluated and g

Opportunistic Osteoporosis Screening: Addition of Quantitative CT Bone Mineral Density Evaluation to CT Colonography.

PURPOSE: For patients undergoing CT colonography (CTC), the screening presents an opportunity for concurrent osteoporosis screening, without increasing radiation exposure or the time involved for the patient, using proximal femur quantitative CT-CT x-ray absorptiometry (QCT-CTXA). METHODS: This cohort included 129 women and 112 men (mean age: 60.1 ± 8.2 years; range: 50-95 years) who underwent CTC between March 2013 and September 2014. Areal bone mineral density (BMD; g/cm(2)), and resultant left femoral neck T-score, was prospectively measured on the supine CT series. QCT results were report

Occult gastrointestinal bleeding.

Occult gastrointestinal bleeding commonly manifests as iron deficiency anemia or fecal occult blood. Iron deficiency anemia results from chronic occult gastrointestinal bleeding. Evaluation of asymptomatic patients who have iron deficiency anemia or fecal occult blood usually should begin with investigation of the colon. Colonoscopy is preferred, but flexible sigmoidoscopy plus air contrast barium enema, or computed tomographic colonography may be acceptable in certain circumstances. If evaluation of the colon does not reveal a bleeding site, evaluation of the upper gastrointestinal tract is m

Lower levels of plasma adiponectin and endothelial progenitor cells are associated with large artery atherosclerotic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Both adiponectin and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been proposed recently with anti-atherosclerosis effects. However, their impacts on vascular outcomes in patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between adiponectin, EPCs and stroke with a case-control design. METHODS: The study cohort included 127 patients (61.3 ± 11.0 years; 73.2% men) with LAA stroke and 58 control subjects (60.9 ± 9.2 years; 70.7% men) referred for adiponectin and EPCs levels testing. We collected demographic, clinical, angiograp

Post-surgical follow-up of colorectal cancer: role of contrast-enhanced CT colonography.

AIM: To evaluate the role of CT colonography (CTC) in the follow-up of patients having received partial colectomy for colorectal cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: CTC was performed in 72 subjects with history of partial colectomy for colorectal cancer. Colectomy had been performed in the right colon (n = 18), descending colon (n = 15), sigmoid colon (n = 21), and rectum (n = 18). Patients underwent CTC following incomplete conventional colonoscopy due to intolerance to endoscope insertion or luminal stenosis. In 70 cases pneumocolon was obtained through a rectal tube, and in 2 cases through a cu

Comparison of radiologists' confidence in excluding significant colorectal neoplasia with multidetector-row CT colonography compared with double contrast barium enema.

The aim of this study was to compare the confidence of experienced radiologists in excluding colonic neoplasia with CT colonography (CTC) compared with barium enema. 78 patients (median age 70 years, range 61-87 years, 44 women) underwent same day CTC and barium enema. Two radiologists experienced in reporting barium enema assessed whether the examination had excluded a polyp 6 mm or greater as "yes", "probably" or "no" for each of 6 colonic segments. Two different radiologists experienced in CTC independently performed the same assessment on the CT datasets. Responses were compared using a pa

Computed tomography findings of bowel wall thickening: its significance and relationship to endoscopic abnormalities.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to conduct retrospective analysis of abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) reports, identifying those patients in whom bowel wall thickening (BWT) was observed, and to correlate these reports with subsequent endoscopic evaluation. METHODS: Formal reports for all patients undergoing abdominopelvic CT between February 2007 and September 2009 were reviewed. Where patients were identified as having colorectal 'wall thickening', results of subsequent endoscopic evaluations were documented. Only those patients with a report of BWT who had follow-up endoscop
