Family Resilience Resources in Coping With Child Sexual Abuse in South Africa.

The aim of this qualitative study was to identify resources of family resilience that help families cope with child sexual abuse. Data were collected from a purposeful sample of parents representing nine poor families living in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The narratives of the participants were analyzed thematically. The results indicate that the families, despite adverse situations, utilized internal and external resilience resources. Internal resources were the parents' relationship with their children, their own emotional functioning and attitudes, the children's ability to cop

Towards Equitable Health Care Access: Community Participatory Research Exploring Unmet Health Care Needs of Homeless Individuals.

Community and health services often overlook health care needs of persons experiencing homelessness, which leads to deterioration in health and increased utilization of emergency services. Since homeless people are underrepresented in health service research, little is known about their unmet health care needs, particularly in smaller cities where resources are limited. This community-based participatory research explored the experiences of small-city homeless service users (HSUs) with unmet health care needs and community service providers (CSPs) who work with them to determine barriers to he

MF-Storm: a maximum flow-based job scheduler for stream processing engines on computational clusters to increase throughput.

BACKGROUND: A scheduling algorithm tries to schedule multiple computational tasks on a cluster of multiple computing nodes to maximize throughput with optimal utilization of computational and communicational resources. A Stream Processing Engine (SPE) is deployed to run streaming applications (computational tasks) on a computational cluster which helps execution and coordination of these applications. It is observed that there is a gap in the optimal mapping of a computational and communicational load of a streaming application on the underlying computational and communication power of the res

Incorporating multifaceted mental health prevention services in community sectors-of-care.

This article proposes a framework for embedding prevention services into community sectors-of-care. Community sectors-of-care include both formal and grassroot organizations distributed throughout a community that provide various resources and services to at-risk children and their families. Though the child population served by these organizations is often at elevated risk for mental health problems by virtue of children's exposure to difficult life circumstances (poverty, maltreatment, homelessness, domestic violence, etc.) these children face many barriers to accessing evidence-based preven

Increasing research capacity in Canadian community hospitals: an intrinsic descriptive case study.

BACKGROUND: Canada's clinical research landscape is limited by minimal community hospital engagement. However, research participation in community hospitals may increase the speed of trial enrolment, enhance the generalizability of results and accelerate knowledge translation to community hospitals, where most Canadians receive care. Two identified barriers to community hospital participation are limited financial support and a lack of research mentorship. METHODS: This study is an intrinsic descriptive case study describing the impact of 1 year of research funding from the Canadian Critical

Prescriptions (Rx) for Prevention: Clinical Tools for Integrating Environmental Health into Pediatric Clinical Care.

The integration of environmental health (EH) into routine clinical care for children is in its early stages. The vision of pediatric EH is that all clinicians caring for children are aware of and able to help connect families to needed resources to reduce harmful environmental exposures and increase health-enhancing ones. Environmental exposures include air pollution, substandard housing, lead, mercury, pesticides, consumer products chemicals, drinking water contaminants, industrial facility emissions and, increasingly, climate change-related extreme weather and heat events. An identified need

Stigma, Abuse, and Resistance: Unveiling Community Fear of COVID-19 Through Voices of India's Frontline Community Health Workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, community health workers (CHWs) worldwide faced violence and abuse. In India, CHWs, known as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), encountered community resistance and violence in their frontline roles. However, positioned precariously within a neoliberal public health system, their voices remained absent in policymaking, reinforcing structural invisibility. This study, guided by the culture-centered approach (CCA), draws on semi-structured interviews (n = 30) with ASHAs in Odisha, India, to examine their negotiations with community resistance. Findings reve

Recovery Capital in Chinese Drug Rehabilitation: Exploring Person-Centred and Community-Based Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Chinese drug policy has begun to introduce recovery frameworks and rehabilitation models. These developments follow the recovery movement and align with several principles of recovery capital. However, this approach has tended to focus on what state systems understand recovery to be, often at the expense of how people experiencing drug dependence understand recovery. This study examines the different processes and purposes of recovery capital among those in drug rehabilitation programs in China, to highlight the importance of person-centred and community-based recovery. METHODS:

Social Drivers of Infectious Disease Transmission and Treatment Among Young Women in Kampala, Uganda's Informal Settlements: A Qualitative Analysis of Focus Group Data From a Community-Based Cohort Study.

Young women in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience significant health disparities. Despite growing understanding that population health outcomes are socially determined, the social determinants of health among young women in the informal settlements of SSA are not well understood. Furthermore, young women's emic perspectives on the pathways that contribute to health risk are rarely reported in scientific research. This research brief describes findings from a qualitative study and specifically addresses young women's insights into the social drivers of infectious diseas

Investigating linkage to care following community-based screening for hepatitis B virus in rural Senegal: A mixed methods study.

This paper investigates linkage to care following community-based screening for hepatitis B virus (HBV) in rural Senegal. HBV-positive participants who completed a biological and clinical examination to assess liver disease and treatment eligibility were referred to a regional hospital (if eligible for treatment), invited to join the Sen-B research cohort study (adults with detectable viral load) or referred to their local health centre (all others). Logistic regressions were conducted to investigate factors associated with (i) uptake of the scheduled post-screening examination, and (ii) HBV m

National Response to COVID-19 in the Republic of Korea and Lessons Learned for Other Countries.

In the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) had the second highest number of cases globally yet was able to dramatically lower the incidence of new cases and sustain a low mortality rate, making it a promising example of strong national response. We describe the main strategies undertaken and selected facilitators and challenges in order to identify transferable lessons for other countries working to control the spread and impact of COVID-19. Identified strategies included early recognition of the threat and rapid activation of national response protoc

Getting Off: development of a model program for gay and bisexual male methamphetamine users.

An evidence-based gay-specific cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) intervention for methamphetamine-using gay and bisexual men was adapted for use in a community-based setting, thereby moving research into practice. The 48-session, 16-week GCBT intervention was revised to 24 sessions requiring 8 weeks and renamed Getting Off: A Behavioral Treatment Intervention for Gay and Bisexual Male Methamphetamine Users. GCBT was modified for implementation within the limited resources and capacity of community-based organizations while also retaining drug use and HIV risk reduction outcomes. Since 2007,

New York City's Community-Based Organizations and the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Descriptive Analysis of Local Organizations' Response Efforts and Their Role During Public Health Crises.

Community-based organizations (CBOs) are on the frontlines offering resources and support to residents during times of distress. Through a community-academic partnership, an interdisciplinary team developed, collected, and analyzed 91 surveys from social services providers across New York City assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their organizations' operations. The majority (93%) of these organizations stayed open during the pandemic but had to shift the services they offered to meet new needs. Although most (89%) shared they were not offering on-site testing for COVID-19, 53% exp
