Metagenomics and untargeted metabolomics reveal antibiotic resistance dynamics in an anaerobic digestion-composting system treating organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

BACKGROUND: The growing population and associated increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) have promoted the use of sustainable waste management strategies. Given its high organic content, MSW can be treated through anaerobic digestion (AD) and aerobic composting (AC) to recover value-added products such as bioenergy and soil amendments. However, MSW is also recognized as a relevant source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising concerns about environmental and public health impacts. This study aimed to elucidate the dynamics of ARGs and antibiotic compounds during the treatment of the o

The inhibition of cystathionine gamma-lyase and cystathionine beta-synthase - a strategy to reduce hydrogen sulfide emissions during livestock manure composting.

The composting of livestock manure produces a significant amount of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which can cause environmental pollution. This has become a substantial impediment to the advancement of the composting industry. In this study, Cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) and Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) enzymes were explored from the perspective of endogenous H2S production. This study investigated aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA) and DL-propargylglycine (PAG) as enzyme inhibitors in composting to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of H2S emission reduction from chicken and swine manure. The

Assessment of the combined response of heavy metals and human pathogens to different additives during composting of black soldier fly manure.

The bioconversion of black soldier fly (BSF) is a new model of livestock manure resourcing. However, the biochemical properties of BSF manure are unstable and direct application can be harmful to crops. Therefore, the effect of additives (biochar, humic acid and tea residue) on the removal of heavy metals and pathogens from BSF compost was investigated. Biochar inhibited the availability of Zn (58.9 %) and As (51.7 %) more significantly. Humic acid and tea residue significantly reduced the availability of Zn (60.8 %) and As (42.5 %) respectively. Humic acid and tea residue inhibited the bioava

Fungi play a crucial role in sustaining microbial networks and accelerating organic matter mineralization and humification during thermophilic phase of composting.

Fungi play an important role in the mineralization and humification of refractory organic matter such as lignocellulose during composting. However, limited research on the ecological role of fungi in composting system hindered the development of efficient microbial agents. In this study, six groups of lab-scale composting experiments were conducted to reveal the role of fungal community in composting ecosystems by comparing them with bacterial community. The findings showed that the thermophilic phase was crucial for organic matter degradation and humic acid formation. The Richness index of th

Health impact of odor from on-situ sewage sludge aerobic composting throughout different seasons and during anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment.

Aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment are two mainstream methods used to recycle and reclaim sewage sludge. However, during these sludge treatment processes, many odors are emitted that may cause severe emotional disturbance and health risks to those exposed. This study identified odor pollution (i.e. sensory influence, odor contribution, and human risks) from samples collected during sludge aerobic composting throughout different seasons as well as during anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment. Odor intensity, odor active values, and permissible con

Contrasting effects of biochar and compost on greenhouse gas emissions and the global warming potential of semi-arid cropping systems.

Agroecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions face growing risks of climate extremes and soil degradation. The addition of exogenous carbon can restore degraded soils by adding soil organic carbon, but its effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming mitigation remain elusive. This study evaluated emissions of three major GHGs-nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4)-following soil amendment with biochar, compost, and a biochar + compost (BC) mixture. Biochar application reduced cumulative N2O-N and CH4-C emissions by 52% and 16%, respectively. Soil CH4-C emi

Composted sewage sludge reshapes soil resistome connectivity and enhances antibiotic resistance gene dissemination in paddy fields.

The reuse of organic waste streams, such as composted sewage sludge (CSS), provides agronomic benefits, but also represents a critical pathway for the environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The consequences of CSS application for soil resistome dynamics and microbial ecology remain insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated paddy soils in Tsuruoka, Japan, under three fertilization treatments: CSS, chemical fertilizer (CF), and their combination (CSS + CF). Quantitative PCR targeted total bacterial (16S rRNA), fecal indicators (E. coli, Enterococcus spp.), mobi

Biodegradation pathways in compost-enriched soil of cotton fabrics treated with chitosan and a natural dye: Chemical and biological evaluation.

This study investigated the biodegradation of cotton fabrics finished with chitosan, a natural antimicrobial biomacromolecule. Chitosan also possesses crosslinking properties that favor the attachment of anionic natural dyes, such as Carmine Red, onto cellulosic textile fibers. Herein, dyed and undyed chitosan-finished cotton samples were buried in compost-added soil (in its original form, rich in microorganisms, or after sterilization at 105 °C) for 10, 30, and 90 days. The comparison between dyed and undyed fabric behavior suggested that the dyed samples were more degradable in terms of fabr

Mechanism of sulfur-oxidizing inoculants and nitrate on regulating sulfur functional genes and bacterial community at the thermophilic compost stage.

The emission of H2S odors predominantly occurred at the thermophilic phase of composting, which could cause odorous gas pollution and reduce the fertilizer value of composting products. And sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) possess oxidative capacities for inorganic sulfur compounds with nitrate applied as electron acceptors. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combined additives (SOB inoculants and nitrate) on the bacterial community diversity, sulfur-oxidizing gene abundances, and metabolic function prediction at the thermophilic stage of sewage sludge composting.
