Obturator mononeuropathy caused by lipomatosis of the nerve: a case report.

We report a patient who presented with the clinical features of obturator mononeuropathy. Abdomino-pelvic computed tomography revealed a fusiform mass in the right perivesical space; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed characteristic "coaxial-cable-like" appearance in cross-section and "spaghetti-like" appearance in longitudinal section, pathognomonic of lipomatosis of the nerve. Nerve lipomatosis as the cause of obturator neuropathy has not been previously reported. MRI provides definite and graphic proof of the diagnosis.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of VR Rehabilitation Systems for ASD: A Focus on Embodied Interaction and Longitudinal Impact.

With the increasing rehabilitation needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the development of virtual reality (VR) systems in rehabilitation, VR training systems based on embodied interaction have received growing research attention. However, evaluating rehabilitation-related changes during long-term VR training and improving the use of multi-source feedback remain important challenges. This study aims to explore the longitudinal effects of a VR training and assessment system based on embodied interaction and multi-source interactive feedback for children with ASD. The sys

Multimodal Feedback for Handheld Tool Guidance: Combining Wrist-Based Haptics with Augmented Reality.

We investigate how vibrotactile wrist feedback can enhance spatial guidance for handheld tool movement in optical see-through augmented reality (AR). While AR overlays are widely used to support surgical tasks, visual occlusion, lighting conditions, and interface ambiguity can compromise precision and confidence. To address these challenges, we designed a multimodal system combining AR visuals with a custom wrist-worn haptic device delivering directional and state-based cues. A formative study with experienced surgeons and residents identified key tool maneuvers and preferences for reference m

Decision Graph Embedding for High-Resolution Manometry Diagnosis.

High-resolution manometry is an imaging modality which enables the categorization of esophageal motility disorders. Spatio-temporal pressure data along the esophagus is acquired using a tubular device and multiple test swallows are performed by the patient. Current approaches visualize these swallows as individual instances, despite the fact that aggregated metrics are relevant in the diagnostic process. Based on the current Chicago Classification, which serves as the gold standard in this area, we introduce a visualization supporting an efficient and correct diagnosis. To reach this goal, we

Real-time pulmonary graphics.

Real-time pulmonary graphics now enable clinicians to view lung mechanics and patient-ventilator interactions on a breath-to-breath basis. Displays of pressure, volume, and flow waveforms, pressure-volume and flow-volume loops, and trend screens enable clinicians to customize ventilator settings based on the underlying pathophysiology and responses of the individual patient. This article reviews the basic concepts of pulmonary graphics and demonstrates how they contribute to our understanding of respiratory physiology and the management of neonatal respiratory failure.

[Use of graphic analysis of topographic trends in perimetry].

A new graphical procedure for topographical trend analysis (graphical analysis of topographical trends: GATT) is able to distinguish several possibilities of evolution of a visual field. Analysis of 100 cases with GATT made it possible to classified them into 10 types of development. This signifies an improvement over global statistical analysis, which distinguishes only 3 different types of evolution. In addition, the individual evaluation of visual field development with GATT is enhanced by quantitative and topographical differentiation within an evolutional type.

Measuring extraocular muscle volume using dynamic contours.

The effect of medical treatment on extraocular muscle enlargement in thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) may be monitored by measuring the change in volume of the extraocular muscles on serial orbital MRI examinations. In theory, 3D image sets offer the opportunity to minimise errors due to poor repositioning and partial volume effects. This study describes an automated technique for estimating extraocular muscle volumes from 3D datasets. Operator input is minimal and the technique is robust. Verification of the technique on both simulated and real datasets is described. For simulated imag

Computer vision applications for the detection or analysis of tuberculosis using digitised human lung tissue images - a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the computer vision applications that detect, diagnose, or analyse tuberculosis (TB) pathology or bacilli using digitised human lung tissue images either through automatic or semi-automatic methods. We categorised the computer vision platform into four technologies: image processing, object/pattern recognition, computer graphics, and deep learning. In this paper, the focus is on image processing and deep learning (DL) applications for either 2D or 3D digitised human lung tissue images. This review is useful for establishing a common practice in TB a

A computer model of major haemorrhage and resuscitation.

An interactive computer model is described which uses 'blood volume deficit' and 'bleeding duration' together with rates of infusion to simulate the first two hours of haemorrhage. It allows multiple infusions of various fluids to be specified and includes an estimation of the volumes added by the transcapillary refill mechanism. The output is expressed graphically in terms of blood pressure and haematocrit at intervals of one minute. This computer model has proved useful for assessing the effects of a range of variables in hypovolaemic shock. It has considerable potential for investigating th

Long-term Adaptation in VR: Retention of Altered Sensorimotor Contingencies through Redirected Walking.

Redirected walking (RDW) alters the relationship between physical locomotion and visual feedback to guide users along virtual paths that vary from their real-world trajectories. Over time these changes can lead to adaptation of the user and produce novel sensorimotor settings that users might retain across sessions and apply directly once they enter virtual reality (VR). Although short-term adaptation to altered sensorimotor contingencies is well established, it remains unclear whether such adaptation is retained across multiple days. We investigated long-term retention of RDW adaptation by re

Overdriving Visual Depth Perception via Sound Modulation in VR.

Our ability to perceive and navigate the spatial world is a cornerstone of human experience, relying on the integration of visual and auditory cues to form a coherent sense of depth and distance. In stereoscopic 3D vision, depth perception requires fixation of both eyes on a target object, which is achieved through vergence movements, with convergence for near objects and divergence for distant ones. In contrast, auditory cues provide complementary depth information through variations in loudness, interaural differences (IAD), and the frequency spectrum. We investigate the interaction between

Causal diagrams, gastroesophageal reflux and erosive oesophagitis.

Gastroesophageal reflux and its consequences have inspired numerous research questions in recent years: are non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and erosive oesophagitis phenotypic expressions of gastroesophageal reflux disease? Why do patients with NERD not respond to treatment as well as patients with erosive oesophagitis? What is the natural history of NERD? Causal diagrams, coupled with conditional probabilities, offer clear and surprising answers.

[The link between glomerulonephritis and hydatid disease ].

The presence of glomerular damage was evaluated for 338 patients, adults (298) and children (40), with pulmonary or hepatic hydatid disease. A descriptive study was used. The glomerular syndrome was present in 2 children (5%) with hydatid disease, 22 adults (11%) with liver echinococcosis and 28 adults (18%) with pulmonary echinococcosis. An early stage diagnosis and proper treatment will determine the reversibility of glomerulonephritis.

Visual feature binding in early infancy.

How does the developing brain of the human infant solve the feature-binding problem when visual stimuli consisting of multiple colored objects are presented? A habituation--dishabituation procedure revealed that 1-month-old infants have the ability to discriminate changes in the conjunction of a familiar shape and color in two objects. However, this good earlier performance was followed by poorer performance at 2 months of age. The performance improved again at 3 months of age. Detailed analysis of the oculomotor behaviors revealed that the age of 2 months was a period of drastic transition wh

Melanoma proteomics suggests functional differences related to mutational status.

Melanoma is the most lethal cutaneous cancer. New drugs have recently appeared; however, not all patients obtain a benefit of these new drugs. For this reason, it is still necessary to characterize melanoma at molecular level. The aim of this study was to explore the molecular differences between melanoma tumor subtypes, based on BRAF and NRAS mutational status. Fourteen formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded melanoma samples were analyzed using a high-throughput proteomics approach, combined with probabilistic graphical models and Flux Balance Analysis, to characterize these differences. Proteomic

Design and evaluation of nonverbal sound-based input for those with motor handicapped.

Most personal computing interfaces rely on the users' ability to use their hand and arm movements to interact with on-screen graphical widgets via mainstream devices, including keyboards and mice. Without proper assistive devices, this style of input poses difficulties for motor-handicapped users. We propose a sound-based input scheme enabling users to operate Windows' Graphical User Interface by producing hums and fricatives through regular microphones. Hierarchically arranged menus are utilized so that only minimal numbers of different actions are required at a time. The proposed scheme was

Stereophotogrammetry of facial soft tissue.

Stereophotogrammetry was employed to measure the 3-dimensional location of points on the surface of the face in a chosen system of coordinates. A 3-dimensional model (image) was computer-generated on the basis of these data. By using specifically determined points the face was postoperatively superimposed upon the preoperative model. Standardized models using the same coordinate system served to objectify surgically induced changes in different graphic representations (sectional planes, contour lines, differences in contour lines, perspective models, differential vector imaging).

Beyond the Self: Avatar Anthropomorphic Fidelity and Calibration Effects on Judging Others' Interpersonal Horizontal Reachability in VR.

Effective collaboration in Virtual Reality depends on users' ability to accurately perceive the affordances of others within a shared space. This paper presents the first empirical investigation of how people judge others' reaching capabilities in Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs). We examined whether observers can reliably estimate the maximum horizontal reach distance of virtual actors, how different actor representations influence these perceptual judgments, and whether calibration feedback can improve estimation accuracy. Participants (N=35) judged the reachability of objects for virtu
