Estradiol shapes mutualistic behaviour of female cleaner fish (Labroides dimidiatus - Valenciennes, 1839): Potential implications of environmental disturbance.

The presence of endocrine-derived compounds in the environment occurs due to a myriad of human or industrial activity and can disrupt the endocrine system of animals, including fish. One important group of endocrine disruptors are the estrogens, such as 17-β estradiol (E2, estradiol). Estrogens are gonadal steroid hormones, able to be influential even in small concentrations. Here, we demonstrate that E2 is linked to female' decisions made by an important coral reef species, the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus, during interactions with other reef fishes (known as clients). E2 treatment in na

Understanding spatial heterogeneity of rocky reef demersal fish assemblages: Links to conservation plans in the Juan Fernández Archipelago Marine Protected Area in the Southeastern Pacific.

Spatial heterogeneity linked to fish assemblages has been key to advancing conservation plans and assessing marine resources in remote ecosystems. The Juan Fernández Archipelago is a remote and highly heterogeneous geologic hotspot located on the Nazca plate (SE Pacific), comprising three islands, numerous seamounts and guyots, and a highly rugged coastal marine shelf. Hundreds of rocky reefs of various sizes characterize this insular coastal shelf, supporting diverse finfish populations of interest for the Robinson Crusoe Island artisanal fishing fleet. Two hydroacoustic surveys were conducte

Potentially sublethal physiological effects of metal pollution exposure in a reef-associated shark, Carcharhinus perezi.

Reef-associated sharks are increasingly exposed to marine pollution, yet sublethal physiological consequences of contaminant exposure remain poorly understood. Associations between metal and metalloid exposure and circulating physiological biomarkers were investigated in free-ranging Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) from Eleuthera Island, The Bahamas. Using non-lethal blood sampling from 32 individuals, serum concentrations of essential, potentially toxic, and toxic elements were quantified and related to physiological stress markers. Seven significant metal-physiology associations

Deep-sea coral habitats off the north atlantic Morocco: Distribution and associated communities.

The recent decline in the health status of deep-sea habitats around the world has pushed the need to document and map their distribution to preserve them in their marine ecosystems. This work describes deep-water coral habitats (133-729 m) and their associated communities, based on nine ROV video transects. These transects cover a 171 km sub-seafloor profile within a predefined 5560 km2 area along the North Atlantic coast of Morocco, surveyed in 2020 as part of a coral habitat mapping study under the FAO-NANSEN programme. The nine sites were initially explored using multibeam echosounder, to g

The clownfish-hosting sea anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria): updated nomenclature, biogeography, and practical field guide.

Ten described species of sea anemones (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Actiniaria) serve as hosts to charismatic clownfishes (or anemonefishes) on coral reefs throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific. Although not diverse in number, the clownfish-hosting sea anemones have large biogeographic ranges, exhibit extensive intraspecific phenotypic appearances, and have been surrounded by a great deal of historical and contemporary taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion. We believe these factors have created challenges for field scientists making real-time species-level identifications of host sea anemones.

Ontogenetic differences in the response of the cold-water coral Caryophyllia huinayensis to ocean acidification, warming and food availability.

Cold-water corals (CWCs) are considered vulnerable to environmental changes. However, previous studies have focused on adult CWCs and mainly investigated the short-term effects of single stressors. So far, the effects of environmental changes on different CWC life stages are unknown, both for single and multiple stressors and over long time periods. Therefore, we conducted a six-month aquarium experiment with three life stages of Caryophyllia huinayensis to study their physiological response (survival, somatic growth, calcification and respiration) to the interactive effects of aragonite satur

Sponges sneeze mucus to shed particulate waste from their seawater inlet pores.

Sponges, among the oldest extant multicellular organisms on Earth,1 play a key role in the cycling of nutrients in many aquatic ecosystems.2-5 They need to employ strategies to prevent clogging of their internal filter system by solid wastes,6-8 but self-cleaning mechanisms are largely unknown. It is commonly assumed that sponges remove solid waste with the outflowing water through distinct outflow openings (oscula).3,9 Here, we present time-lapse video footage and analyses of sponge waste revealing a completely different mechanism of particle removal in the Caribbean tube sponge Aplysina arch

Population densities predict forebrain size variation in the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus.

The 'social brain hypothesis' proposes a causal link between social complexity and either brain size or the size of key brain parts known to be involved in cognitive processing and decision-making. While previous work has focused on comparisons between species, how social complexity affects plasticity in brain morphology at the intraspecific level remains mostly unexplored. A suitable study model is the mutualist 'cleaner' fish Labroides dimidiatus, a species that removes ectoparasites from a variety of 'client' fishes in iterative social interactions. Here, we report a positive relationship b

A chromosome-level reference genome of the surf parrotfish (Scarus rivulatus).

The parrotfish, Scarus rivulatus, is a widely distributed herbivorous species, that helps maintain reef resilience by controlling algal growth. However, overfishing and reef degradation threaten its populations, and the lack of genomic resources limits studies on its adaptive potential and conservation strategies. In this study, we successfully assembled a high-quality chromosome-level genome for S. rivulatus using a combination of Illumina, Nanopore, and Hi-C technologies. The assembled genome is 1.58 Gb in size, with scaffold N50 lengths reaching 67.2 Mb. Hi-C contact maps anchored approxima

Choice of traits defines the scope for assisted evolution of corals under climate change.

Marine heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change, are causing widespread coral mortality. Novel host-associated assisted evolution interventions, such as selective breeding, are now being considered to enhance coral heatwave tolerance and promote population persistence. Yet the evolutionary constraints associated with targeting different heat tolerance traits and the risks of unintended fitness costs remain uncertain. Here, we quantify key life history traits for Acropora aff. digitifera corals in a pedigree-tracked managed population. We find weak-to-moderate positive genetic correlations amon

Phototoxic effects of PAH and UVA exposure on molecular responses and developmental success in coral larvae.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic carbons (PAHs) poses a growing risk to coral reefs due to increasing shipping and petroleum extraction in tropical waters. Damaging effects of specific PAHs can be further enhanced by the presence of ultraviolet radiation, known as phototoxicity. We tested phototoxic effects of the PAHs anthracene and phenanthrene on larvae of the scleractinian coral Acropora tenuis in the presence and absence of UVA (320-400 nm). Activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme was reduced by anthracene while phenanthrene and UVA exposure did not have any effect. Gene expression o

Use of Intravascular Lithotripsy in Heavily Calcified Renal Artery Stenosis: A Case Report.

Heavily calcified arterial lesions are difficult to treat in an endovascular manner with conventional techniques due to limited arterial compliance. Intravascular lithotripsy offers a novel minimally invasive therapeutic option through endovascular emission of acoustic waves, fracturing calcium deposits and facilitating lesion dilation. We present the case of a successful application of the Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy system (IVL®, Shockwave Medical Inc) in a heavily calcified stenosis of the right renal artery in a patient with a coral reef aorta.

[Eccentric infrarenal aortic stenosis. Surgical and endovascular treatment].

The management of coral reef lesions reported in this case study demonstrates the complementary and non-competing character of the open and endovascular treatment. The minimally invasive procedure of stent-optimized angioplasty seems to be advantageous as the primary therapy in selected cases. In the case of clinical deterioration the endovascular technique allows surgical reconstruction without significantly diminishing the result. Catheter-based techniques therefore remain an additional instrument for treatment in the hands of vascular surgeons which substantially broadens the range of thera

An assessment of chemical contaminants in sediments from the St. Thomas East End Reserves, St. Thomas, USVI.

The St. Thomas East End Reserves or STEER is located on the southeastern end of the island of St. Thomas, USVI. The STEER contains extensive mangroves and seagrass beds, along with coral reefs, lagoons, and cays. Within the watershed, however, are a large active landfill, numerous marinas, resorts, various commercial activities, an EPA Superfund Site, and residential areas, all of which have the potential to contribute pollutants to the STEER. As part of a project to develop an integrated assessment for the STEER, 185 chemical contaminants were analyzed in sediments from 24 sites. Higher level

Ciguatera fish poisoning.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is the most common form of toxin-related food poisoning in the United States. Originating from dinoflagellates living on coral reefs, it is spread up the food and affects humans who ingest the ciguatoxic fish. Ciguatera is primarily endemic in tropical regions of the world. It is a self-limiting disease that presents with characteristic gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular symptoms. Recent advances in testing procedures and symptom recognition has improved ciguatoxin identification and clinical management. However, there is still a need for better diagnos

Traditional remedies used in the western Pacific for the treatment of ciguatera poisoning.

Ciguatera is a specific type of food poisoning associated with the ingestion of tropical fish, which, although normally safe for consumption, may at times contain high amounts of ciguatoxin, as well as other chemically related toxins. Widespread in tropical regions where coral reefs are present, ciguatera fish poisoning constitutes a major hindrance for local fishing industries, local economies and foreign trade. Because no symptomatic treatment has been totally satisfactory, folk remedies remain of great interest. In this paper, a list of plants used in treating ciguatera poisoning in the Wes

Validation of an accelerated solvent extraction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for Pacific ciguatoxin-1 in fish flesh and comparison with the mouse neuroblastoma assay.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a global foodborne illness caused by consumption of seafood containing ciguatoxins (CTXs) originating from dinoflagellates such as Gambierdiscus toxicus. P-CTX-1 has been suggested to be the most toxic CTX, causing ciguatera at 0.1 μg/kg in the flesh of carnivorous fish. CTXs are structurally complex and difficult to quantify, but there is a need for analytical methods for CFP toxins in coral reef fishes to protect human health. In this paper, we describe a sensitive and rapid extraction method using accelerated solvent extraction combined with high-performanc

Mutagenicity, genotoxicity, and scavenging activities of extracts from the soft coral Chromonephthea braziliensis: a possibility of new bioactive compounds.

Coral reefs are diverse ecosystems that have a high density of biodiversity leading to intense competition among species. These species may produce unknown substances, many with pharmacological value. Chromonephthea braziliensis is an invasive soft coral from the Indo-Pacific Ocean that is possibly transported by oil platforms and whose presence can be a threat to a region's biodiversity. This species produces secondary metabolites that are responsible for inducing damage to the local ecosystem. In the present study, extracts were prepared from dried colonies of C. braziliensis (solvents: hexa

Incorporating cyclone risk in the design of marine protected and conserved areas as an ecosystem-based adaptation approach.

Marine protected and conserved areas (MPCAs) are promoted as an ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach to increase community and ecosystem resilience to climate change. However, traditional approaches to MPCA design typically do not consider climate risk or habitat condition under a climate threat. We used the Great Sea Reef (GSR) in Fiji as a case study to develop a land-sea prioritization framework that links modeled sediment runoff from rainfall during extreme cyclone events to the probability of coral reefs being in good condition. We incorporated this information in an MPCA prioritizat
