An Adaptation and Validation of Cocaine Craving Questionnaire for Malaysians Who Use Amphetamine-Type Stimulants.

INTRODUCTION: Cases of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) use have been increasing over the past decade. Cravings are considered a causal factor for recurrent relapses in ATS use cases. The absence of questionnaires measuring cravings for ATS in the local population necessitates the creation of one, especially considering the rising number of cases. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to adapt and validate the Cocaine Cravings Questionnaire into a questionnaire suitable for measuring cravings for ATS in the local population. METHODOLOGY: The original questionnaire was adapted by substituting "cocaine

Sex differences in the neuroadaptations associated with incubated cocaine-craving: A focus on the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Women have a shorter course from initial cocaine use to meeting the criteria for cocaine use disorder as compared to men. Preclinical findings similarly indicate that females develop key features of an addiction-like phenotype faster than males, including an enhanced motivation for cocaine and compulsive use, indicating that this phenomenon is biologically based. The goals of this study were to determine whether cocaine-craving, another key feature of addiction, also develops sooner during withdrawal in females than males and to determine whether there are sex differences in the

Obesity and hyperandrogenism are implicated with anxiety, depression and food cravings in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: PCOS is associated with mood/eating disorders. Negative body image due to obesity, acne, hirsutism seems to play significant role, but hormonal derangements are probably implicated. AIM: To investigate the relation between insulin resistance (IR), obesity and hyperandrogenism with mood and eating disorders in women with PCOS. METHODS: Forty-nine (60.5%) PCOS women and 32(39.5%) age- and BMI-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Emotional/food disorders were evaluated by using self-administered questionnaires: Eating Attitudes Test (EAT)-26, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-I

The role of emotion dysregulation in the relation of childhood trauma to heroin craving in individuals with heroin dependence.

OBJECTIVES: Difficulties in emotion regulation (DER) may be important in heroin craving in individuals with heroin dependence who have experienced childhood trauma (CT). However, no research has been performed on DER in the context of heroin dependence. The aim of this study was to evaluate direct and indirect relations of CT to the subscales of heroin craving (i.e., heroin thoughts and interference, intention to use heroin and control of its consumption, and resistance to thoughts and decisions to use heroin) via DER dimensions in individuals with a DSM diagnosis of heroin dependence. METHOD

Testing the addictive appetite model of binge eating: The importance of craving, coping, and reward enhancement.

In the current study, we examine components of the "addictive appetite" model of recurrent binge eating. Specifically, we tested the influence of addictive processes and the influence of emotional regulation processes on recurrent binge eating behaviour. We recruited 79 women in total for the current study: 22 with bulimia nervosa, 26 weight-matched lean comparison women, 15 women with binge eating disorder, and 16 weight-matched overweight/obese comparison women. Participants completed questionnaire assessments of food craving and motivations for eating. Compared with weight-matched compariso

Aripiprazole for relapse prevention and craving in alcohol use disorder: current evidence and future perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Among other approaches, the modulation of the dopaminergic pathway has been advocated in the therapeutic management of Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). A potential avenue toward the modulation of the dopaminergic pathway across varying substance disorders seems to be provided by aripiprazole, a second-generation antipsychotic characterized by a peculiar pharmacodynamics signature. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors provided a qualitative synthesis and a critical perspective on the efficacy of aripiprazole in relapse prevention and craving in AUD. A systematic search was carr

Effects of childhood maltreatment on the neural correlates of stress- and drug cue-induced cocaine craving.

Childhood adversity negatively influences all stages of the addiction process and is associated with persistent alterations in neuroendocrine, autonomic and brain responses to stress. We sought to characterize the impact of childhood abuse and neglect on the neural correlates of stress- and drug cue-induced drug craving associated with cocaine addiction. Cocaine-dependent men with (n = 20) and without (n = 18) moderate to severe childhood maltreatment histories underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during script-guided mental imagery of personalized stress, drug use and neutral exper

Impact of fasting on food craving, mood and consumption in bulimia nervosa and healthy women participants.

Researchers have found that dietary restraint increases food cravings and may contribute to loss of control over eating. Negative mood states often precede food cravings and binge eating. In the present study, we tested the influence of a prolonged food deprivation period over emotional states and food cravings. Twenty-one bulimia nervosa participants and 20 healthy women participants were asked to refrain from any eating for 20 hours and reported, at baseline, after 6 hours and at the end of the fasting period, their mood and craving states. Food consumption was also measured. Fasting increas

The impact of diacetylmorphine on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and heroin craving in heroin dependence.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Heroin dependence is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by the compulsion to seek and use heroin. Stress and craving are seen as key factors for heroin use. Moreover, altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function has been frequently reported. However, the acute effects of diacetylmorphine (DAM) on HPA axis activity and craving have not been investigated in a controlled study. The present randomized controlled study examined whether DAM administration differs from placebo (saline) administration with regard to HPA axis response and heroin craving. METHODS:

Brain fMRI and craving response to heroin-related cues in patients on methadone maintenance treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the subjective craving and brain response to heroin-related cues in former heroin addicts on long-term methadone maintenance treatment. METHODS: Fourteen participants completed an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging task including heroin-related and nonheroin-related (neutral) cues. Craving self-reports were collected before and after the task. RESULTS: Although no significant craving changes were associated with the task, blood oxygen-level dependence intensity was significantly greater during exposure to heroin-related cues, compared to neutral cue

Alcohol demand, delayed reward discounting, and craving in relation to drinking and alcohol use disorders.

A behavioral economic approach to alcohol use disorders (AUDs) emphasizes both individual and environmental determinants of alcohol use. The current study examined individual differences in alcohol demand (i.e., motivation for alcohol under escalating conditions of price) and delayed reward discounting (i.e., preference for immediate small rewards compared to delayed larger rewards) in 61 heavy drinkers (62% with an AUD). In addition, based on theoretical accounts that emphasize the role of craving in reward valuation and preferences for immediate rewards, craving for alcohol was also examined

The craving to smoke in flight attendants: relations with smoking deprivation, anticipation of smoking, and actual smoking.

In the study, the authors examined the effects of smoking deprivation, anticipation of smoking, and actual smoking on the craving to smoke. Flight attendants who were light to heavy smokers rated their craving to smoke at predetermined time points during a 2-way short flight (each leg 3-5.5 hr) and a 1-way long flight (8-13 hr). In both short and long flights, craving increased gradually and peaked as landing approached. Craving levels at the end of the 1st leg of the short flights were equal to those at the end of the long flight and were much higher than those at the parallel time point in t

Cue exposure in the treatment of alcohol dependence: effects on drinking outcome, craving and self-efficacy.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate beneficial effects of cue exposure treatment for alcohol dependence by contrasting it with a well-established treatment approach. We hypothesized that cue exposure treatment is associated with a stronger decline of craving, a stronger increase in self-efficacy and has beneficial effects on drinking behaviour after discharge. DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty-three patients with a diagnosis of alcohol dependence were recruited from an in-patient alcohol-detoxification facility. Patients were sequentially assigned to either cue exposure or a s

Recurrent detoxifications are associated with craving in patients classified as type 1 according to Lesch's typology.

AIMS: Recurrent detoxifications have been suggested to be associated with elevated alcohol craving. The aim of this investigation was to study the influence of preceding detoxifications on craving in patients with alcoholism classified according to Lesch's typology. METHODS: We examined 192 patients (154 men, 38 women) after admission for detoxification treatment. Craving was assessed using the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale, and patients were classified into one of the four subgroups of Lesch's typology. The number of preceding detoxifications was assessed with a structured interview.

[Effect of chronic craving for ethanol on accumulation of calcium ions in intracellular structures of rat myometrium].

In the experiments on the impregnant estrogenized rats the effect of chronic ethanol intake on Ca(2+)-accumulative mitochondrial systems and endoplasmatic systems of myometrium was estimated. It was defined that in chronic alcohol consumption the transport activity of mitochondria Ca(2+)-accumulative systems didn't prevail over endoplasmatic reticulum Ca(2+)-accumulative activity. Therewith mitochondria and endoplasmatic Ca(2+)-transport system was essentially disturbed. In the tested conditions Mg2+, ATP-dependent sensitivity of calcium pump to oxytocin inhibiting action was shown to disappea

Effects of Multisensory Environmental Cues on Food Craving, Healthy Food Preference, and Stress-Related Recovery.

Emotional eating (EE) is associated with poor dietary quality and weight gain among university students. Therefore, exploring innovative, non-invasive interventions to support healthier food-related responses is essential. While multisensory environments show promise in influencing food-related responses, their effectiveness in managing stress-induced EE remains understudied. Grounded in the Environment-Organism-Health (EOH) model, this study used an immersive virtual reality (VR) platform and recruited 49 Chinese university students. After emotional induction tasks, participants were randomly
