The fusion of wearable soft robotic actuators and motion-tracking sensors can enhance dance performance, amplifying its visual language and communicative potential. However, the intricate and unpredictable nature of improvisational dance poses unique challenges for existing motion-tracking methods, underscoring the need for more adaptable solutions. Conventional methods such as optical tracking face limitations due to limb occlusion. The use of inertial measurement units (IMUs) can alleviate some of these challenges; however, their movement detection algorithms are complex and often based on f

While there is a lack of research into abuse in elite dance, numerous allegations of emotional, sexual and physical abuse of dancers can be found anecdotally in the media, legal convictions and personal accounts. As more dancers speak out, the scale of the problem within preprofessional schools and professional companies is becoming apparent. Accordingly, effective safeguarding mechanisms for preventing, identifying and reporting abuse are urgently needed. This viewpoint is intended to raise health professionals' awareness of factors contributing to abusive practices found in dance environment

Background: The research paper provides valuable insights into the perspectives of adolescent ballet dancers regarding dance-related injuries. The authors' work is commendable, but several methodological improvements could enhance the study's accuracy and reliability. As a researcher with similar interests, I offer suggestions to strengthen the data collection and analysis process. Methods: Original Approach: The study utilized an online survey for data collection, suitable for close-ended questions but less ideal for qualitative research. Suggested Improvements: Data Collection Method: One-on

BACKGROUND: During their training, pre-professional ballet students are confronted with physical stresses comparable to those of competitive sports. In competitive sports, there are mandatory and binding aptitude tests to ensure that the growing athlete meets the requirements. In ballet, there are no such mandatory examinations preceding the start of training. For adult professional dancers, musculoskeletal ideals could be isolated from the dance medicine literature. However, only a few studies describe musculoskeletal characteristics of pre-professional ballet students. It is neither known at

INTRODUCTION: Responding to the need for innovative, multi-modal, non-pharmacological strategies in chronic low back pain (cLBP) care, this article presents the development and a mixed methods feasibility trial of a manualized Mindfulness-based Dance/Movement Therapy (M-DMT) program for cLBP. The 12-week program is designed as a group therapy, integrating mindfulness principles, creative/expressive dance and movement, and psychoeducational content focused on cLBP management. This holistic program seeks to cultivate nonjudgmental awareness of pain experiences, challenge maladaptive pain-related

UNLABELLED: Yersinia pestis has recently evolved into a highly lethal flea-borne pathogen through the pseudogenization of extensive genes and the acquisition of exogenous plasmids. Particularly noteworthy are the newly acquired pPCP1 and pMT1 plasmids, which encode the virulence determinants Pla and Yersinia murine toxin (Ymt), crucial for subcutaneous infection and survival within flea vector of Y. pestis, respectively. This study reveals that Pla can cleave Ymt at K299 both in vivo and in vitro. Y. pestis expressing YmtK299A displays enhanced in vitro biofilm formation and increased blood su

Classical ballet dancing is a good model for studying the long-term activity-dependent plasticity of the central nervous system in humans, as it requires unique ankle movements to maintain ballet postures. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether postactivation depression is changed through long-term specific motor training. Eight ballet dancers and eight sedentary subjects participated in this study. The soleus Hoffmann reflexes were elicited at after the completion of a slow, passive dorsiflexion of the ankle. The results demonstrated that the depression of the soleus Hoffmann re

INTRODUCTION: Drug dependence causes an overestimation of drug-related stimuli and an underestimation of non-drug-related stimuli, such as food. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute moderate-intensity dance and aerobic exercise on drug craving, appetite, prefrontal neural activation to food cues, and food reward in women with methamphetamine MA dependence.
METHODS: Thirty-nine women who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition MA dependence criteria participated in the experiment and were randomly assigned to either a dance (n =

This article explores relevant issues in dance medicine for dancers with disabilities, blindness/low vision, and/or deafness/hard of hearing (DWDBD). Within dance medicine and science, there has been minimal focus on DWDBD. Little is known about injury patterns, injury prevention, or wellness strategies for DWDBD. However, there are increasing numbers of dance programs and companies involving DWDBD at preprofessional and professional levels. This article reviews the history and experience of DWDBD and offers best guidance regarding dance medicine considerations for DWDBD based on the limited r

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder with stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. Dance practice can elicit esthesia to stimulate the communication process through the notion of the phenomenal body that is recognized in an expressive and symbolic space.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review to identify how dance promotes positive benefits for the negative symptoms in ASD.
METHOD: We formulated the research question based on PICO: "What is the influence of dance on negative symptoms in individuals with autism spectrum disorder?". Datab

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise improves neurological conditions, but adherence is hard to establish. Dance might be a promising alternative; however, since patients with Huntington's disease (HD) suffer from rhythmic movement execution deficits, any metric dance practice must be avoided.
OBJECTIVE: Here we asked, if contemporary dance, a lyrical dance form, practiced for two hours per week over five months, might improve motor function, neuropsychiatric variables, cognition and brain volume of HD patients.
METHODS: Nineteen patients aged between 43 and 78 years with mild to moderate HD (TFC r

BACKGROUND: Studies have assessed the therapeutic effect of music, dance, and rhythmic auditory cueing for patients with Huntington's disease (HD). However, the synthesis of evidence in support of their positive impact on symptoms is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the potential benefits of music, dance, and rhythm on the cognitive, psychiatric and motor function in patients with HD.
METHODS: Two- and three-keyword searches and a manual search identified medical literature published from 1999 through 2019. We considered literature that assessed out

BACKGROUND: Adolescent ballet dancers have a higher incidence of injury than adult professional dancers. It is unclear which factors, including biomechanical changes related to intense dance training and/or the growth process itself, contribute to increased injury risk in this population.
OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in strength, flexibility, and functional performance in adolescent ballet dancers during a summer intensive dance program.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Performing arts school in a suburb of Massachusetts.
PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of 58 male and female b

The aim of this study was to explore the principle of moblile echogenicities in epididymis in patients with a history of postvasectomy or infertility, which were reported as the characteristic sonographic sign of filarial infection. We reported a 38-year-old man presented with a 3-year history of infertility after marriage. Ultrasound imaging revealed an enlarged body in the inner left epididymis along with innumerable punctate mobile echogenicities, which showed random to-and-fro movements in the left epididymis. This had previously been recognized as the sonographic filarial dance sign of liv

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of human suffering and disability for which disease-modifying treatments are lacking. OA occurs through complex and dynamic interplays between diverse factors over long periods of time. The traditional research and clinical focus on OA, the end stage disease, obscured understanding pathogenesis prior to reaching a common pathway defined by pain and functional deficits, joint deformity, and radiographic changes. To emphasize disease modification and prevention, we describe a multi-disciplinary systems-based approach encompassing biology, mechanics, and str

This investigation aims at describing voice function of four nonclassical styles of singing, Rock, Pop, Soul, and Swedish Dance Band. A male singer, professionally experienced in performing in these genres, sang representative tunes, both with their original lyrics and on the syllable /pae/. In addition, he sang tones in a triad pattern ranging from the pitch Bb2 to the pitch C4 on the syllable /pae/ in pressed and neutral phonation. An expert panel was successful in classifying the samples, thus suggesting that the samples were representative of the various styles. Subglottal pressure was est

Noise exposure, hearing loss and associated otological symptoms have been studied in a group of 23 disc jockeys using a questionnaire and pure tone audiometry. The level of noise exposure in the venues where they work has also been studied using Ametek Mk-3 audio dosimeters. Three members of the study group showed clear evidence of noise-induced hearing loss on audiometry, 70 per cent reported temporary threshold shift after sessions and 74 per cent reported tinnitus. Sound levels of up to 108 dB(A) were recorded in the nightclubs. The average level for a typical session was 96 dB(A) which is
