The clinical effects of a mouthrinse containing 0.1% octenidine.

The purpose of this three-month clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of a 0.1% octenidine mouthrinse on plaque, gingivitis, extrinsic dental stain, and the oral soft tissues. A total of 451 adult volunteer subjects was initiated into the study and given baseline dental examinations. The subjects were stratified into two balanced groups according to gender, plaque, and gingivitis scores. The subjects then received a dental prophylaxis and were provided with dentifrice, toothbrushes, and either a mouthrinse containing 0.1% octenidine dihydrochloride as the active ingredient or a similar pl

An epilogue to plasma-cell gingivostomatitis (allergic gingivostamtitis).

Sixteen cases of plasma-cell gingivostomatitis were studied at the University of California San Francisco between 1966 and 1971. Twelve women and four men made up the group, with ages ranging from 15 to 70 years. Prior to treatment, the duration of the disease ranged from 5 to 60 months. Each of the sisteen patients manifested a homogeneous, diffuse, erythematous gingivitis associated with a cheilitis, and fifteen also had a marked glossitis. Each subject was symptomatic, and nine also complained of bleeding. Every biopsy specimen demonstrated a characteristically diffuse and dense plasma-cell

The AADOCR Position Statement on Topical Fluoride.

Topical fluorides play a critical role in the prevention and management of dental caries and have been a cornerstone of evidence-based oral health promotion for decades. A rigorous understanding of the improved acid resistance of fluorapatite, with more recent evidence of the antimicrobial actions of fluorides, has helped establish its key role in caries management. The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) recommends using fluoride-containing dentifrices at 1,000 to 1,500 ppm twice daily based on the current evidence. For preschool-aged children, only a sma

Early life stage and genetic toxicity of stannous chloride on zebrafish embryos and adults: toxic effects of tin on zebrafish.

Humans are exposed to stannous chloride (SnCl(2)), known as tin chloride, present in packaged food, soft drinks, biocides, dentifrices, etc. Health effects in children exposed to tin and tin compounds have not been investigated yet. Therefore, we evaluated the possible teratogenic effects and genotoxic of SnCl(2) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) adults and their embryos. In the embryo-larval study, SnCl(2) showed embryo toxicity and developmental delay after exposure to the various concentrations of 10-250 μM for 120 h. Teratogenic effects including morphological malformations of the embryos and lar

Allergic contact dermatitis and stomatitis caused by a cinnamic aldehyde-flavored toothpaste.

A patient had acute stomatitis and dermatitis due to a popular toothpaste containing cinnamon oil flavor. Cinnamon cassia oil is known as a topical sensitizer and was demonstrated to be the offending allergen. Cinnamic aldehyde and related chemicals are used widely, so that patients having cinnamon allergy may be exposed to many sources. There is difficulty in diagnosing allergic contact stomatitis.

[A PhD completed. Trauma to the gingiva by oral hygiene aids and oral piercings].

Maintaining healthy teeth and soft oral tissue is important. Clinical research has shown manual toothbrushes with end-rounded filaments to cause significantly less gingival abrasions than those without end-rounding. Tapered filaments are an alternative to end-rounded filaments, but there is no solid evidence for their effectiveness. For the interdental spaces that the toothbrush doesn't reach, the use of special oral hygiene aids is advised. Clinical studies of gingivitis patients have shown that both interdental brushes and plastic-rubber bristles reduce gingivitis after 4 weeks of use. Plast

Evaluating the Clinical Efficacy of Tooth Powder on Plaque-Induced Gingivitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Toothpastes and tooth powders are common oral care products used to control plaque and other deposits from tooth surfaces, thereby reducing gingivitis. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of tooth powder in controlling dental plaque and gingivitis. A double-blind, parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial was conducted on 154 participants, aged 33 to 40 years, having at least 20 teeth with a full-mouth gingival index (GI) score ≥ 1.04 and fulfilling other inclusion/exclusion criteria. The plaque index (PI) and GI scores were used as measures of oral hygiene. Outcome variables of

[Toothpaste allergy].

Cheilitis was observed in a 74-year-old patient after use of a new toothpaste which occurred after several weeks despite withdrawal of the paste. Positive patch testing with the toothpaste confirmed suspect contact sensitization. The cause was the main component of the flavour additive i. e. the terpene ketone L-carvone. Due to the characteristic flavour it is contained in many mint and peppermint oils. In this case it also caused the recurrences by sucking of refreshment lozenges. L-Carvone is also contained in most chewing gums and should thus be considered aetiologically in cases of cheilit

Antibacterial Effects of a Novel Stannous Fluoride Toothpaste Stabilized With Nitrate and Phosphates (SNaP): In Vitro Study and Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Stannous fluoride has long been an effective antibacterial, anticaries, antisensitivity, and antigingivitis addition to toothpaste formulas. However, in the past its chemical properties in aqueous solution have made it difficult to stabilize with desirable results. The recent development of a novel formulation of 0.454% stannous fluoride stabilized with nitrate and phosphates (SNaP) has resulted in prolonged therapeutic effect without compromising product experience and esthetics. METHODS: Dentifrice antibacterial performance in vitro was determined through bacterial bioenergetics

The health belief model and determinants of oral hygiene practices and beliefs in preteen children: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: There is limited understanding of children's behavioral decisions for practicing good oral hygiene. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that may motivate children to practice good oral hygiene. METHODS: Guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM), eight focus groups of 42 American children (second through fifth graders) were interviewed concerning their histories with caries, perceived confidence in brushing, self-perceived susceptibility and vulnerability for caries and/or poor oral health, and perceived benefits and barriers to practicing oral hygiene. RESULTS: Most chil

Modulation of Biofilm Formation and Permeability in Streptococcus mutans during Exposure To Zinc Acetate.

The penetration of biofilms by antimicrobials is a potential limiting factor in biofilm control. This is relevant to oral health, as compounds that are used to control microbial growth and activities could also affect the permeability of dental plaque biofilm with secondary effects on biofilm tolerance. We investigated the effects of zinc salts on the permeability of Streptococcus mutans biofilms. Biofilms were grown with low concentrations of zinc acetate (ZA), and a transwell transportation assay was applied to test biofilm permeability in an apical-basolateral direction. Crystal violet assa

Induction and inhibition of oral malodor.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3 SH) are the main components of oral malodor, and are produced as the end products of the proteolytic processes of oral microorganisms. The main pathway of proteolysis is the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids by gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria may promote VSC production by gram-negative anaerobes by cleaving sugar chains from glycoproteins and thus providing proteins. A large variety of bacteria within the oral microbiota are thought to be involved in the complex phenome

Effects of a toothpaste containing 0.3% triclosan on periodontal parameters of subjects enrolled in a regular maintenance program: A secondary analysis of a 2-year randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The triclosan-containing dentifrices are effective in controlling biofilm formation and maintaining gingival health; however, there is limited information on their effects during the periodontal maintenance phase. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effects of a toothpaste containing 0.3% triclosan on the periodontal parameters of subjects that have been treated for peri-implantitis and were enrolled in a regular maintenance program. METHODS: Subjects presenting at least one implant with peri-implantitis and received surgical anti-infective therapy were s

Fluoride distribution in the enamel of the mesio-lingual cusps of pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars of man with a low fluoride background.

The enamel fluoride concentrations at different depths were determined at 5 different sites on the mesio-lingual cusps of 16 pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars. Six successive acid etchings were done on each of the 5 sites. The 16 subjects (18 to 33 years) were living continuously since birth in a low fluoride area (F less than 0.10 ppm). They did not take any systemic fluoride since birth nor did they practise any other anti-caries fluoride program than brushing their teeth once or twice a day with fluoride-containing dentrifrices with about 1,000 ppm fluoride. The fluoride level in
